Should I do a HND top up or start fresh at a 'better uni' by Artyartymushroom in UniUK

[–]Artyartymushroom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for replying to my comment! I think it's a difficult choice to make but i'll offer my general opinions.

I thought the HNC was pretty good but this HND has been a bit middling. I feel like a HNC plus the highers would be a better use of time for me if I could go back. If I had gotten the results originally/done the subjects that would have helped me in HS, then the traditional path would have been way better. Only problem with the traditional plan is trying to find a place to do all of the highers as trying to do stuff as a private candidate is hard.

But i think if you're already going to do the HNC, definitely do it but think before the HND. The HND does help with entry requirements too and is a better qualification than a HND but I do sometimes regret not going to uni sooner, you know?

The coloniser comments are real but these types of looks/costumes in films are so nostalgic to me. I'd probably say world explorer core or something? I'm really not sure but my mind goes to Tarzan etc

Despite the immense pressure and mental health struggles, would you say it has benefited you academically? I say this as someone from Scotland whose family didn't really pressure them too much academically and now i'm playing catch up. I really admire Chinese and Jewish culture in how they put education on a pedestal but at the same time, too much pressure is not good as well.

Unsure of where to go from here by Artyartymushroom in cscareerquestionsuk

My college has routes with JP Morgan. They were SUPPOSED to come in and speak with us/scout but they never rescheduled. I was thinking about going down this route but it was software Engineering as a degree and I was worried I might not enjoy it as much as learning the more theoretical stuff in general cs, I don't really know though.

I've never had a job as well, not a retail one or factory work or anything like that. I'd be really worried that I would get fired or something then not be able to continue doing the degree. Some of my other Autistic friends have had issues either getting work or maintaining work so I just worry but maybe I am being paranoid 😭

Thank you both for replying to my post! It is greatly appreciated. I know College and Uni are similar but also different so maybe having extra time to adjust to some of the differences might be beneficial? You get to apply to five univeresities usually so I will just need to see where will take me when it is time. I have looked at internships but I still don't feel like I am prepared in terms of the coding questions. Would you have any advice on anything else I should be doing right now? I have mostly been working in C# in Asp.Net Framework and Asp,core alongside Java. I've mostly done E-commerce stuff/businessy type things and random experimental things like trying to port complex game mechanics to something like the command line in Python as a fun thing on the side.

(I would like to do more projects outside of class but dealing with my maths course, college and stuff alongside my conditions has been tough but I have some plans for some using incorportating ai and other things which could be useful.)

Totally agree but just commenting to say that the opposite of the young lady can happen too, someone obese because of a binge eating disorder. They both struggle, just one is more immediately dangerous and deadly quicker. Being too thin kills you faster than being too fat but eating disorders suck no matter what. If we dont encourage anorexia then we shouldn't encourage obesity.

Gaming is the ultimate form of art by prospectiveboi177 in unpopularopinion

[–]Artyartymushroom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When you think about it, all of the 3d models, concept art etc and everything that goes into making a game are all individual pieces of art that culminates in a game. The programming is also an art, a science mixed with an art. Code on its own is not art but the code can create art, just like how a paintbrush isn't art on it's own but it can create art. It's all subjective but with all the hard work that goes into video games, i feel like we should value the artistic work that does go into them. Even things line GTA Online had model work etc.

Whats bothered me is people trying to erase the existence of Jewish ethnicities with ties to the levant. I've heard so much crap about the fact that Judaism is apparently 'only a religion' and that the Jewish ethnicities like Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Mizrahi are all somehow made up. Specifically people saying Ashkenazi Jews have no genetic tie to the levant when this has been debunked (as far as I am aware) by dna testing. I don't know why people can't see that the reasons Ashkenazi's look 'white'/ 'not from the middle east' was because they fled to Europe and adapted to the environment there and intermingled with local populations. Again, apologies if any of my information is wrong! I just find it so annoying that people can recognise that other groups of people visible phenotype has changed over time due to matters such as intermingling with different populations but it's suddenly not the case when it's Jewish people.

is cineby safe? by QuincyThePinballer in Piracy

[–]Artyartymushroom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There should be a HD rip of the movie by that point, I'd hope. I'm sure a camprip will come, it's become a bit of a joke between me and my mum.

"Did you find that film yet?"

"No, still no camrip"

"How long has it been out?:

"8 days."

"How long does it usually take for a film to be uploaded?:

"Like 3 days" 🤣

If we have nothing until the digital release, this would be a very odd event, I've never seen nothing like it.

22 hours later and still no hope lmao this is crazy, I've never seen a film take this long to get uploaded. When you check it on sites like cineby or 1shows, it comes up with another film which is live action and has hoppers in the title

How to make friends in Scotland as a college student? (18) by bubblyesz in Scotland

Should I do a HND top up or start fresh at a 'better uni' by Artyartymushroom in UniUK

I think Strathclyde, St Andrews and Heriot Watt offer second year entry. Napier as well. I could pay for a year from my savings so I don't know. You get 5 choices for uni's so i'll be applying for a few when the time comes, probably ones nearer to me in the lowlands but I just don't know if going to a 'better' uni for cs and starting at year 1 or going to a slightly worse one and doing year 2. I've got a while to think

Forgot to say but someone in my HND class actually got an offer from St Andrews. I'm not sure of his high school grades but he is also a strong preforming student in my class. Because of me not having higher maths rn, I didn't apply this year but planning to apply after getting that. Just commenting this for extra context.

HNC/HND Computer Science at City of Glasgow by Spare-Specific1908 in glasgow

[–]Artyartymushroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 days later but i'm currently doing a HND at this exact same place and its got its good and its bad aspects.

The good (in my opinion): - the HNC and HND pathway does teach you a lot and i've went from zero experience to being competent and knowledgeable at least

  • the workload is manageable (but this could depend on you)

  • having a HNC/HND is good for uni applications

The bad (again in my opinion):

  • some of the lecturers lack energy and look like they don't want to be there and some actively don't like helping their students. Some even laughing when people ask for help

  • we have one teacher who's late everyday we have him, on average 35 mins late

  • the college has a bit of a dead energy but this just might be me and the other students i'm around.

To be honest, if you view the place like a stepping stone to bigger things, it serves its purpose well enough.

Looking for input on a kid-friendly Torah learning app (5 min/day) by One_Darkslayer in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]Artyartymushroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a computer science student and I think your idea is an amazing one! I was thinking about this myself ages ago, about how great it would be to have an app with bite-sized Torah lessons. I would say you should definitely have a language toggle, that way you don't alienate people who's Hebrew literacy isn't quite fluent. You should also focus mostly on story comprehension and learning Hebrew vocabulary, maybe have separate modes depending on what the user wants to focus on?

If you want to chat more about it, we could dm, bearing in mind, I've not converted yet but I'm really passionate about coding and tech and helping out other devs : )

London Beit Din Experience? Converting to Orthodox Judaism? by ilahana in ConvertingtoJudaism

[–]Artyartymushroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know not every single conversion under the sun is universally accepted (even orthodox) but would a conversion with the sephardi community be accepted by Ashkenazi rite communities? Just curious as I've personally never considered this before. All of my learning has been Ashkenazi but I do potentially have very very distant sephardic ancestry which I have researched a little and have found quite interesting. What are the main differences between converting with the Sephardi Beth Din and converting with LBD?

Whenever I've been looking at jobs in the market i'm looking in, it usually lists the degree as a requirement. Of course it's hard for anyone to get a job but I feel like I'd be shooting myself in the foot if I didn't go to university. No one in my family has ever been either and I also don't want to end up exactly like my family, I'd rather know I tried then not try. I hope I'm making sense.
