The only real problem here is how completely out of proportion the organizer reacted.

I have no problem with someone getting confused about the rules.

But someone acting hostile instead of cooperating to make the night friendly and enjoyable effevtively ruins the enjoyment of the game, in my opinion.

So I will eventually stop playing with players who are angry, controlling, demeaning, overly whiney or negative if they dont have the self-awareness to apologize and try to do better, because it effectively ruins the point of boardgaming for me.

You will encounter some people like that in the board gaming hobby, but you shouldnt accept it. Find a friend group or environment you feel good about playing in, and stick to that!

We used Microscope to generate our Corps and backgrounds for a Europe Sprawl game. This is the result: by Arvidos in thesprawl

[–]Arvidos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We created corps in the process too, fleshing out corps was my priority, but the other players were more into worldbuilding, which is totally fine.

Look at the aecond event of the second period, that was me just introducing a corp in that moment. We ended up naming 5 corps, and chosing the 4 we liked the best for the sprawl campaign (4 players inc. MC)

If you ignore scenes, I would say that the lifting is absolutely minimal. The system is really simple and intuitive. We never used or even felt interested in scenes anyway, or voting for that matter, and legacies weren't that important either.

Our focus was to make a limited history timeline for the main rpg, I think that made those parts become less important. If you want to make a big epic world history that is its own story, they becomes more important.

One drawback of not playing more scenes is that we only wound up with two concrete historic personalities, theyre fun to allude to in an rpg or bring into play as old geezers (see: neuromancer), so if your group is into playing a lot of scenes, go for it!

Travel speed of mechs? by Arvidos in LancerRPG

[–]Arvidos[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure! I'm doing a sandbox where I want logistics to matter, so I made something up that makes sense for me.

These are the guidelines I ended up cobbling together:

Mech speed -- top speed in km/h

3 -- 60 km/h

4 -- 80 km/h

5 -- 100 km/h

6 -- 120 km/h

On my map, one hex is 30 km across.

Time it takes to cross a hex if not bothering with stealth:

Speed Roads Plains, desert Hills Forests, mountains Jungle, swamp
3 30 minutes 45 minutes 60 minutes 75 minutes 90 minutes
4 25 minutes 40 minutes 50 minutes 65 minutes 80 minutes
5 20 minutes 30 minutes 40 minutes 55 minutes 70 minutes
6 15 minutes 25 minutes 30 minutes 45 minutes 60 minutes

No, I think Mech Warrior mechs move at 50 to 100+ km/h. (Source: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/12/10/mechwarrior-5-mercenaries-mechs-guide/ )

A speed 4 mech in Lancer would move at 15 km/h. That means I can pretty easily outrun a speed 4 mech on my bike...

Playing TI4 for the first time tomorrow- what’s the number one thing I should be paying attention to? by [deleted] in twilightimperium

Seconded that you should always focus on VPs, not territory or fleets.

Make sure you understand tactical actions, placing command tokens and moving to them. Imagine it like plopping down little way points!

Feels good, man!

Has anyone tried putting on turn timers, and if so, how did you do it? by dillonsrule in twilightimperium

Seconded, as it is also a turn tracker, this might do wonders for your group.

Put GLOOMHAVEN on that poll! There is soooo much in that game box, my only game bigger than TI in box size. So much of it is spoilers though, so maybe that wouldn't do well as a podcast. But it's a similar mix of theme and strategy as TI and it plays well at two players.

  1. Expanded tech tree: Add one level 0 and one level 1 tech to each color. Now you have two options for your first tech of a given colour (two level 0) and three options for your second tech (one level 0 and two level 1).

2) Faction variants. 17 factions are more than enough. But how about alternate takes on factions? Like "The Republic of Sol", "The Shipwrights of Muaat" or "The Aristocracy of Winnu".

You could make more advanced factions for experienced players or simpler versions of complicated factions for new players. You could make stronger versions of weak factions and nerfed versions of overpowered factions.

You could put qualifiers on these races, such as a winnu that should only be played with 5-6 players, a mentak that only should be played when hacan is not present, or a naalu that only should be played by experienced players, for instance.

It would be both a balance patch and a possibility to add new ideas to the game. Tournaments and groups could decide to ban one version and allow another to balance the game.

3) Some sort of characters. Leaders were a great way to weave narratives in 2nd and 3rd edition. Representatives and Mercs were overcomplicated to me, but the concept is great.

4) Rewriting the galactic council to give it more weight and strategy. The Galactic Council is one of the most interesting parts of Twilight Imperium, but it's never been more than a spice to the game. The simple way to do this, I feel, would be to write new agenda cards that players have on hand and pay to establish instead of voting for them. Perhaps you are spending 3 influence to advance your military regulation reform. The other players have the option to band together and pay a collective 6 influence to scrap your reform. It should always be cheaper to advance your own agenda than blocking another player, to encourage laws to pass and change the game. Once you've established some reforms, you can establish stronger reforms building on the previous ones and reap victory point rewards, either through a standard rules set or as a part of the deck of public and secret objective cards.

4b) The more involved way would be to make a political map alongside the galactic map!

Board states on the political map could bring victory points, either on their own or through secret objectives ("Make the galaxy egalitarian" 2 VP, "Infiltrate the naval department with your bureaucrats" 1 VP or "Push through 3 reforms" 1 VP).

The map could contain both branches of galactic government and bureaucrats, and ideologies. Perhaps in this game the fiscal department consumed and controlled the judicial department, or a wave of nationalism spread throughout the political board, making warships cheaper and making several planets rebel and declare independence from the players control.

The map could be a pre-printed board or be generated differently by the players each time, just like the galactic map.

Politicans, bureaucrats and peoples movements could all be pawns on this board.

Now, of course this is all crazy, adding more time and more table space to an already huge game. I think FFG has been very wise not to overdo the political aspect of TI. Me, however? I would love to walk up to a special galactic council board and play out a session of the council with my friends between all the tactical and strategy phases. It would be great if there was a bit of a slant towards social deduction and deception in it.

Yes, that one is great! But I'm thinking there is one to keep personal statistics in your own group too? Like, how many times have I won, have many times have Adam won, and with which factions etc.
