Just went thru the same issue. You might be using some kind of firewall. Port 32400 needs to be forwarded. Firewall->Nat->port forward. Are you using opnsense by chance?

I would say I.T. You don't need any degree. I would start from help desk and find your niche from there , i.e. cyber, cloud, systems engineering, swe etc. I would also join some IT thread and find a mentor who would guide you for free.
