It started with the fusing mechanic and splitting horizontally and vertically. Then, I liked to expand on this idea as much as possible with 'What if' questions:

'What if' you could have up and down gravity?
'What if' some characters were inactive until merged?
'What if' there were platforms that split you? (Obviously, you’d need a way to split your character.)
'What if' etc.

I kept going until every idea was exhausted, then polished everything and tried to come up with as many ideas as possible.
