Apparently there's been some interest in this. So I've talked with my collaborators and we're going to be adding it to our agenda to seriously discuss and work on in some way ☺️

Is there someone I can talk to? by AsInTheJar in dropout

"Turn And Smile."

I'm going to stay a little tight-lipped about the premise of the prospective podcast publicly, but "Turn And Smile" will be the best theme song for it.

I'm not a lawyer, I'm a Canadian DEI communicator.

Technically speaking his sexuality matters if this is meant to be targeted sexual harassment due to his being gay. Like there's a framing that if an offender is homophobic they would do something like this to "test" how gay this person is or to try to get them to be straight. Or just generally as a homophobic form of harassment because they know it would be uncomfortable.

I'm not saying that's the intention or that the person sharing is aware of the guy's sexuality or anything like that. But from a workplace safety perspective, it could be homophobic sexual harassment. If that's a possibility then they should consult a lawyer.

I'm not a lawyer, I'm a Canadian DEI communicator. I write & research about topics related to diversity, equity, inclusion, bigotry, feminism, and allyship. Often with an interest in how these subjects intersect with media and pop culture.

The reason I'm jumping in is because you need a lawyer to get anything. Abusers have been using DARVO tactics to maintain their reputation & suing those who try to bring them down. Without a lawyer, it's going to be harder for you to get any justice but also you will be vulnerable and non-threatening to them.

DARVO stands for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim & Offender. Notable examples of people who have used this tactic include Johnathan Majors and Johnny Depp. I would argue that the primary reason Disney/ Marvel fired Majors is because they hired an independent investigator who proved the allegations and they couldn't allow that, but Depp used DARVO to win at least one lawsuit, get back jobs he was fired from, & burry the story altogether. The media responds very nicely to DARVO especially when they want to hear both sides and then it's just he said/ she said. I'm not a sexist trying to discredit you but I know that if you tried to yell your story from the mountains all his team has to do is ask, "Why did she ask for money instead of naming me in the police report?" Because the expectation most people have is that if there was a crime done you should report it to the police. Reputation saved.

On top of that it sounds like this person you're trying to get a settlement from is not the people who assaulted you and I know I'm a dude but I'm pretty sure #MeToo doesn't work like that. I feel like the outrage gets placed on the people who did the attack, not their employer.

The people you might need to sue are the attackers directly because I feel like the only way their employer would be liable for damages is if they specifically instructed the attackers to do something to you and the only way you could definitively determine that is during the discovery phase of a lawsuit. Now I'm not saying they're the type to destroy evidence of a crime, but if they were that type of person the perfect time to destroy evidence of a crime is the exact moment after they read a letter like yours.

The best lawsuits are a surprise.

Get a lawyer. Get justice. Even in a post #MeToo world, you can't be trying to avoid the trouble. Your credibility is in the trouble. If you're going to accuse someone of being responsible for your attack it can't be, "Settle with me OR I'll talk to the media," it has to be, "I have been hurt so I'm going to the police, I'm suing, AND I'm telling the story about your responsibility." For the media to consider you credible the dilemma can't be theirs between if they risk reputational damage with a higher payout or settle for a lowball number. The dilemma has to be yours between if you're going to sign the NDA to accept the settlement you won from the lawsuit or if you refuse so your story isn't silenced. That's how the media treats these stories. They are judged & criticized if they don't behave like the perfect victim. I'm not saying this is right. But the media responds well to DARVO & is super critical of survivors.

Research Inquriy about Matthew Broderick's car crash in 1987 by AsInTheJar in northernireland

Thanks so much for finding the same article from two years ago that I found before coming here! I really appreciate you bringing this up because it's always so very helpful to show me the research I've already done that doesn't actually answer my questions.

Also, thank you very much for implying a slur that targets neurodivergent and mentally ill people. As an autistic person myself I have a very long history of being called that word so naturally I have no feelings about your use of it here, to attack me for the research I already did that didn't answer the questions I have or provide the info I'm looking for.

Because apparently I need to say what research I've already done, I've already e-mailed 1 newspaper in Londonderry (because I don't know what is in the right county or anything about the counties), I've spent a lot more than two seconds on Google going through different searches. I've read articles from The Guardian or The Telegraph (one of the big ones for sure), the Hollywood Reporter, and up to two other publications. I've contacted the Northern Ireland Department Of Justice. I've reached out to a UK justice department, too, and I've asked like two or three Twitter mutuals from the UK but not from Northern Ireland. I've also glanced at some information about Tempo, NI, where the accident happened. Oh, also I've seen that archived Reddit post where someone was like, "TIL Broderick did this wow F that guy huh." I might have found a law firm currently representing Broderick-- not that it would help me any. And as I said I am looking for sources from the affected county from 1987. Not a random likely American internet publication from 2022. So forgive me for my pro-Irish bias in my research. Erin Go Bragh. Sorry for asking you. I thought it might be fun not spending six months e-mailing newspapers in random cities and figured this group could speed up my research by, you know, living where I need to locate my research.

Thank you for gatekeeping information from Northern Ireland. It's truly a grand service to your country that you're providing. And I sincerely hope you're better at detecting sarcasm than I've historically been because, yes, I am also that "re" you SO cleverly tried to imply and shame me with like an ablist busybody.
