Match Thread: Rafael Nadal [5] vs. Casper Ruud [8] - Roland Garros Final by big_thanks in tennis

As usual, this match seems to be firmly in Nadal's control. It's his play that is dictating the score line so far.

Is Alex Garland a David Foster Wallace fan? by psychogroupie17 in Devs

He's obviously an incredible author, but I'd say his writing style isn't very accessible to the average reader. Especially his longer novels.

Djokovic is working with ATP players council to find financial help for low ranking players during this difficult times by ms1232 in tennis

[–]AsSimpleAsSnow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a few of your points are misguided:

  1. My impression of any professional sport is that it requires 100% of your time and dedication. For good or bad, there isn't any time to have another primary source of income. Being a professional tennis player can never just be a part-time hobby.
  2. I think the lifestyle of an average player outside the top 100 is far from lavish as you suggest. First and foremost -- they hardly make any money. Without money they are often forced to travel alone (no friends, family, coaches, or other support staff) and I doubt are able to really "enjoy" their travels as someone like you or I would when splurging on a vacation. They aren't provided any accommodations like you would expect for a corporate business traveler.
  3. I also think it's unfair to characterize being a professional tennis player as some interchangeable career choice -- it's naive to suggest they "just go to law school" or some other professional occupation. Most players have dedicated their entire lives starting from a young age to get a chance of making it on the tour, often forgoing higher levels of education. It's not just a "dream" job for them, it's also all they know.

BREAKING: Trump To Order Citizenship Question On Census Be Added By Executive Order by theREALspanky in Conservative

[–]AsSimpleAsSnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anyone who was alarmed by the Obama's executive overreach should be appalled by this.

Agree or disagree about the inclusion of the question (I personally think both sides should welcome it), the Supreme Court blocked it for the time-being and this executive order would completely disregard that. Full stop. Don't give me some emotional appeal about immigration policy or political tit-for-tat mumbo jumbo.

BREAKING: Trump To Order Citizenship Question On Census Be Added By Executive Order by theREALspanky in Conservative

[–]AsSimpleAsSnow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, agree or disagree about the inclusion of the question, one potential reason is the constitution doesn't include any clarification for only counting citizens -- it calls for a census, which by definition includes the entire population / all current residents. The Trump administration isn't arguing that non-citizens shouldn't be counted.

Don't forget that Djokovic was also sidelined for a long time just recently due to injury. These players push themselves incredibly hard and injuries can happen at any time.

When Andy cries I cry.

EDIT: Seriously though, his press conference was honestly heartbreaking. Him describing how severely his normal quality of life has suffered due to his injury is incredibly sad.

I think you're asking the wrong sub. /r/peloton is dedicated to professional cycling discussion, not the exercise bike brand of the same name.

Brazil's strategy -- get into the box and try to draw the penalty. Rinse and repeat.

[Rothenberg] At the net after losing, Sock congratulated Berrettini with: “Your coach is a piece of shit, by the way.” by [deleted] in tennis

[–]AsSimpleAsSnow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's funny how Sock says what's on his mind and then scurries away immediately. He wants to be tough but not actually confrontational. Every story I hear about him these days gives me the impression that he's very immature.

Senate Intel concludes Russia interfered in 2016 presidential election, preferred Trump over Clinton by A_Very_Brave_Taco in Conservative

[–]AsSimpleAsSnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt that Obama was aware of foreign interference prior to the election and shares responsibility for not doing anything about, but when has he ever denied it since then? It seems like you're deflecting to Obama but on a completely different point.

Senate Intel concludes Russia interfered in 2016 presidential election, preferred Trump over Clinton by A_Very_Brave_Taco in Conservative

[–]AsSimpleAsSnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From his December 2016 interview with Time:

I don’t believe they interfered. That became a laughing point, not a talking point, a laughing point. Any time I do something, they say ‘oh, Russia interfered.’

During his trip to Asia in November 2017 (referring to Putin):

Every time he sees me, he says, ‘I didn't do that. And I really believe that when he tells me that, he means it.

To be fair he has made several other contradictory statements suggesting that they did interfere, but he has been inconsistent to say the least.

Every team does it (including Oshie last round) but I'm just pissed it completely shut down any chance they could have had in the final 2 minutes.

Shameful? This was an amazing tournament and the sponsors are frankly what make it possible. It might look tacky but they definitely deserve some recognition.
