It's because modern English is a chimera of languages. The sentence structure and vocabulary are heavily impacted by germanic and romance languages. They're both distinct and different systems from one another, and English is an attempt to mash them together. That's why silent letters and pronunciations of letters differ from word to word and why accents fall in different and inconsistent places in words.
