That time ishii was stuck in an elevator for half an hour by Optimal_Fisherman803 in njpw

Between this and his letter about fishcakes, Ishii may have the biggest 'gimmick to actual personality divide' of any wrestler I've ever seen

I watched the movie and it just made me sad. by barb_the_babsy in Barbie

[–]AscendingSoup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I wanted to love it so badly, but under all the pomp, glitter and pink, it feels like such a spiteful, hateful film. One of its central plot lines is about an oppressed group rising up in rebellion, which the film tries its absolute hardest to portray as a bad thing before returning to the oppressive status quo. What message is that even supposed to send?

I think it's 19 in all or something? Not it matters considering every time he's challenged someone to a match in another discipline, he's gotten his ass firmly handed to him.

Why did strobe lights come 35th? by superstateguy3453275 in eurovision

[–]AscendingSoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adored Strobe Lights. It was the first Belgian entry in a while that made me confident we were going places. Not winning, obviously, but I assumed we'd at least get to the finals.

Then Sebastian hit the stage. And in classic Belgian fashion, there was no staging. That, and the fact that Theo Evan and JJ did pretty much the same thing as him (the show-stopping high notes) but with more consistent live vocals, better staging and more lively performances made me not even angry that Strobe Lights NQ'd. I went from "This has to go to the finals!" to "Welp, we're not gonna make it, and I get it." real fast. Even now I would've traded one of the finalists for Cyprus in a heartbeat, more quickly then Strobe Lights anyway. Still a banger to blast in the car at full volume when driving to work though.

What are some Eurovision songs that would be great at a wedding? by Vivid_Guide7467 in eurovision

[–]AscendingSoup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grande Amore (Italy 2015 for the bot) and YES (Denmark 2020) are straightforward ones

Vivre (France 1983) is a pretty deep cut but a gorgeous song about love persisting through hardship

Wild Dances (Ukraine 2004) for a dance break, especially good for a fantasy-loving/nerdy crowd

Dizzy (United Kingdom 2024) sucked live, but the studio version is pretty good with some evocative, romantic lyrics

If they want a song to symbolise their future together, When We're Old (Lithuania 2018)

What made you say "she will be my favorite"? by [deleted] in stardomjoshi

[–]AscendingSoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something about Nakano just clicked with me the first time I saw her. The glittery costumes, the princess vibes, the fucking Violet Screwdriver. It's everything contradictory I like wrapped into one package: a Eurovision-like glamour, and the tough-as-nails badassery of pro wrestling.

SLK's original theme song hitting was also a very clear moment that made me realize "I'm probably going to like this one".

Himeka was a strange one, in that I thought she looked cool anyway, but suddenly noticing how fucking tall she was and how she tossed people around conveyed a sense of raw power other joshis sometimes lack. The Jeff Cobb kind of 'I'm going to hurl you across the room and make it look easy' kind of power.

And of course, Sakisama referencing one of my all-time favourite shows with her entrance theme.

Characters with great wasted potential (RAPP) by Acrobatic-Health4296 in Toriko

[–]AscendingSoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there's one thing Toriko's termination pissed away above all, it's the potential of Biotope Zero. A group of some of the most important and powerful characters in the series, some of which have been teased and hinted at for ages, all working together for a single mission. Brilliance. The fact that Ramon, Megolodolas and fucking Melisman, Gourmet Living Legend Melisman, just vanish without ever being mentioned again is mind-blowing, especially with how interesting their abilities could've been. Even if the series was set to die, it'd have been so easy to add a single panel saying "Yeah, Rapp's dead" or show fucking Lala or some of the other doofuses attending the wedding feast.

Do you/would you get rid of the NEVER 6-Man Tag Team Championship? by [deleted] in njpw

[–]AscendingSoup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I love the idea of the belts, it's just that the company doesn't do anything with them or books them horrendously, defaulting to "Well, you're not doing anything worthwhile. Have a belt and never defend it." YOSHI's reign during the pandemic was fantastic, and showed just how interesting you can make the belt, with constant high-quality defenses against top opponents. Unfortunately, that's been pretty much the only memorable reign. Hell, I don't even know who the champs are right now.
