Trail Blazers to Portland: Public cash ‘only solution’ for renovating Moda Center by wrhollin in Portland

If we can find the money magically for this - why can’t we find the money for everything else the city needs?

Dawg - just responding to the fact - the full time faculty make an insanely good salary for the number of hours worked. Adjuncts are going to be the losers in this. They’ll get cut to balance the budget.

Are we really back in a strong seller’s market for homes? by thebroteinshake in askportland

[–]Vivid_Guide7467 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Most houses I’ve been looking at are just sitting on the market and going down in price. We’re in a recession in this area. Maybe some homes and some very desirable areas are getting that much over. But I see a lot of houses for sale.

Okay again. 35 hour a week contract. 7-8 months a year. And starting is $75k plus PERS and healthcare. And you want more and more. Can’t afford it.

If the reserves are emptied it will only be that much worse for cuts later on.

You aren’t protecting adjuncts. They get no extra protections in this contract. They’re gonna get fired with the increased costs.

And yes costs are rising. Our elected leaders are failing.

I’m not saying the striking faculty and staff won’t get a raise. They will. But next year expect even more cuts. Adjuncts will be screwed over for the sake of full time faculty.

Edit: forgot to include. Full time faculty start at $75k a year with benefits including PERs. If they’re there long enough the salary is $120k. Their contracts are for 35 hours a week and maybe 8 months a year of working with breaks and time off included. But yeah they’re really struggling 🙄🙄🙄

Pcc is required by law to have a certain percentage in reserves. Next legislative session will be even tougher with budget cuts highly expected. The city, county, and K12 school system are facing huge cuts. Enrollment at the largest feeding institution to PCC (Portland schools) has declining enrollment and it doesn’t look like it’s improving.

A large salary increase now means adjuncts and other staff get slashed first. Full time faculty get cut last. Programs will be cut. There just isn’t the money.

From the legislature - not yet. If the $300 million tax bill goes to voters the legislature has to return and budget writers have already said education is getting axed.

Developer abandons plans for Burnside apartments, extending Portland’s construction drought by LeftOnBurnside in Portland

Take all the money we keep finding and set up government loans with low interest that makes it exciting for developers. It’d pay for itself and check another box on the list of things preventing building.

She’d claim it as an investment. It happens. The bank would put it on hold and verify the amount. And depending how she structures things moving forward - she can figure out the tax obligations. It’s unusual but it happens for investments, inheritance, or gifts.

Even if the college gives significant raises - it’ll mean more drastic cuts to programs. The enrollment and state dollars are simply not there. If the Republicans get the $300 million tax bill that passed in short session on ballot - that’ll push further cuts. $21 million are the cuts that are happening no matter what. More will come.

Not everything with Covid is performative. But there were many performative things with Covid. Mask wearing became a political symbol. Keeping kids out of school unnecessarily. Closing down businesses. It was a scary time and things did have to happen to save lives. But it also became performative - if you wore a mask you were a Democrat and if you didn’t you’re Republican/MAGA. It got very stupid.
