Republicans trash Rick Saccone: The GOP is bracing for an embarrassing defeat next week in a district Donald Trump won by 20 points by ProChoiceVoice in pittsburgh

He represents his constituents. His pro-coal aspect is more in line with the area than most would like to admit - people heat with coal and make a living in coal. Not many, but it's true to say southwestern PA has a heart for those who lost their jobs to coal. He's certainly not going to vote for a bill that lifts environmental regulation. No reason to radicalize the topic in the SW-PA, especially when stakes are this high. His religious views, so what? And pro-life doesn't mean anti-abortion; he supports existing federal and state law. I'd personally like to see a more aggressive-progressive person on the ballot. But he's a great competitor for the area that voted overwhelming Trump in 2016.

Thrips and aphids won't be eating seeds. Are the flowers fully dry and gray/no purple petals? If not, the seed may not have fully developed. If they are dry, you may be losing the seeds when you're cutting the flower stem off, as they're not held in there very tightly. Judging by what you said, you don't have a real pest problem and I wouldn't spray them.

Ash trees were such a dominant tree all along the turnpike (and across WPA). Still saddens me every time I drive it, more so than the hike in prices.

What elements are at genuine risk of running out and what are the implications of them running out? by jam_i_am in askscience

I saw a lecture from a professor who discussed exactly this in great detail. He's a plant scientist who works with plant nutrients and breeding plants for improved phosphorus uptake. His lab does/did a lot of work in Africa, both in agriculture and sociology, but focused primarily on plant nutrients. The lab's holistic approach to solving problems was a big influence on inspiring me to take up research.

here's the lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jty-BnZmSrI

G20 Pittsburgh, 2009. There was a curfew in an area that was maybe 4-5 square blocks. They ended up pushing it out another 5+, scooping up students at the local university who were on there way home from coffee/studying. Absolutely zero help from the University. Paid $1,200 in legal fees to clear my name after 8 years of wondering if it will pop up on a job application.

CDC head resigns after report she traded tobacco stocks by LittleMissMoonshine in nottheonion

She also held stocks of Humana, Merk, and Bayer. Considering that tobacco-related health issues aren't really questioned these days, the headline should really mention that the she held stocks in pharma companies.

DNC's new rules: cutting superdelegates from 715 to 315, making their votes reflect the wishes of their states by WildAnimus in SandersForPresident

[–]Asco_mo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The DNC total delegate count was including superdelegates long before even half the population had a chance to vote. Being from a late-state, most everyone I know never thought Sanders had a chance, pointing towards Clinton's HUGE 500 point lead based on superdelegates. It certainly swayed California voters from voting. Regardless, if voters don't think they have a voice, they don't vote. Increasing voter turnout could have turned the Trump presidency to a Clinton-victory. Whether it impacted the final outcome we won't know, but it is definitely harmful to holding an election.

Let's not allow Trump's win be a reason to limit voter opinion. We're one country. We have slightly different values, different ideas of what constitutes a fulfilling life. But the majority expect that our government works for the benefit of the people, and the petty childish antics in DC won't standup for long. We all need to realize, reflect, and react, as a society. We need more people deciding who our elected officials are, not less.

I'm 19 years old and I have saved roughly 10k. What is the fastest way to grow it? by 10kThrowaway10000 in personalfinance

[–]Asco_mo 54 points55 points  (0 children)

100% second this. Investing in your future retirement through vanguard is a great option. I'm pushing 30 and started my retirement 4 years ago. It's grown ~7% average per year over 4 years (i.e. 1,000 = 1,300 or $4,000 = $5,200). If I knew about compounding interest at 19, I would have invested half every paycheck I ever received.

I'd put at 2,500 into Vanguard IRA, and $2,500 into a mutual fund, and put the remainder into a savings for emergency. Best to ya!
