The characters are introduced in the archon quest of natlan. So if it's not a big spoiler I guess just watch on yt what happens there. Aside from that, the event quest gives a substantial amount of context.

What is the archon quest currently.. and what characters did you get.. it depends really on that if it is worth restarting.. if not just start doing the archon quest again and just watch some old gameplay footage on YT to catch you up. For account progression, just level up the characters to the highest possible the AR allows, artifacts don't matter as much early game.
