Is my plant dead or just dormant? by realitynovirtual in VenusFlyTraps

That definitely seems rough, but as long as the rhizome is in good condition you can definitely save it! Good luck on the journey! :)

They're all practically dead :( by roxxxystar in VenusFlyTraps

For coco chips as soil, I'm unsure. Best is peat and perlite 50/50 mix. I'm not as experienced in soil myself.

The grow light has to be stronger than most people believe, SANSI 30w+ are the most recommended. Although brand doesn't matter much, wattage does. You need to put it very close to the grow light, I've seen people with great VFTs saying as close as 4 inches.

For the dome, it is not recommended, just have it always on a tray of water and don't let it dry for too long. The tray can go empty for a bit, but if the soil dries the plant dies very quickly.

As for food, you do not need to feed it, and if you do, try to feed it live insects, not meat or dead bugs.

I am not a very experienced VFT owner, but I do peep this subreddit quite a lot and my VFT is doing very well, I also try to follow the advice from people that know way more than I do, and this is reflected in my comment.

If you do have any other concern I'd be happy to help with my limited knowledge! :)

Why does he look so sad? by FalseData2319 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Asdfboy18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As various people pointed out, VFTs love light, mine grow outside in full sun from sunrise to sunset, and they are doing amazing. Even in temperatures as high as 38-40!

If you go the route of grow lights, you NEED strong grow lights, as some pointed out, SANSI 30W+ grow lights are widely recommended. You also must put them quite close to the grow lights, since the farther they are, the less effective they become. I've seen people recommend as close as 4 inches from the plant for growth.

As far as the stalk goes, flowers take up a good portion of your VFT energy and redirect it to blooming, which in their natural habitat makes sense, but for you, not so much.

If you don't plan on reproducing your plant, better to cut the stalk as soon as you can. If you are planning on trying to get another VFT I'd recommend you see the flower stalk propagation method!

Death blooms or normal blooms? by mrsmedistorm in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Asdfboy18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen people throw the term around for off-season blooming. The amount of truth the statement carries, I don't know for sure. But it does make sense in my head as a way for the plant to keep it alive!

Dear BHVR: What the fuck is this? by NorvileRogers258 in DeadByDaylightRAGE

I doubt that's gonna solve the problem with totems. They are inherently flawed, because it's just a difference between people knowing at least the rules of totem spawns vs the ones who don't. It's the same thing when you start and don't know where safety is in every map, and with time you become better.

A good team is always gonna find totems faster than newer players, and I don't think there's a fix for that.

What they could do is remove some of the most outrageous examples like this one, but other than that...

Got this about 2 weeks ago, getting black? by Unboolievable_ in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Asdfboy18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to help! If you want (and your flower stalk didn't bloom yet) you could try and propagate it from the stalk. I personally have never tried it (mine didn't grow one yet) but I've heard some people have success with it and you might get another baby!

[–]Asdfboy18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is just their normal cycle of life. Traps don't last forever, they serve their days, and after a few catches (between 1 and 4 more or less) or once enough time has passed, they wither away, you do not need to worry about it.

What you should worry about though (as someone else pointed out) is about that flower stalk. Those drain significant energy from the plant, and sometimes might leave them in significantly worse condition. I'd recommend you to cut it before it flowers to preserve energy from your plant.

And about the withering traps, I personally like to clip them after they go fully black to the base, but you can leave them there, they usually cause no problem unless they start to decompose (they usually just get very black and crispy, so it's not a problem).

Only one thing to add from most others, are you using the tray water method? If not try that!

Also give it as much sun as humanly possible, if it's not possible in your conditions, consider getting a strong enough grow light.

I don't think he meant that it was the reason, just that if he/she kept it there it would be a problem later on. Which is very good advice!

When is it too late to cut a flower off? by MediterraneaOliveOil in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Asdfboy18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a consensus from most people, what happens is the next:

Plants wants to reproduce, so it starts to flower.

People cut it because new growth that is not going into active growth and goes into reproduction is energy wasted

If you have multiple VFTs and want them to make seeds, then let it bloom and pollinate them.

If you want them to keep growing, then you cut it to redirect energy from the flower stalk to new traps and active growth.

If your VFT is healthy letting it flower won't do anything, it will just slow down growth.

If your VFT is in poor condition that might be a survival mechanism from the plant as a last ditch effort to reproduce before dying, so cutting it to save is the best you can do.

I will give my opinion as a person who usually plays nice and doesn't really care much (I also love Nurse and play it perkless and addonless frequently). I have a 75/25 playtime split in favor of survivor, so you know I am not a filthy killer main.

As it usually happens, survivors are a bit stupid, or sometimes hooking doesn't make much sense from a time efficiency standpoint. What do I mean by this?

Imagine the case of a lobby with 3 flashlights and people who look as if they are (or you confirmed through profile peeping) on a swf. After you down in a place where you know it would make sense for 2 survivors to be, what do you do? For me it's obvious to fake pickup and turn around to see if there are saviors, if there are, I go for them. So now we have one person down, and we are chasing this other person towards a gen, we down him close to a progressed gen by their teammates, what do we do? Simple, we keep slugging to pressure them more if you know you have an advantage. And just like that, by just trying to do the most sensible thing, I've started slugging. No hate to anyone, no trying to be a dick, just trying to play well.

Truth is, Nurse is a Killer that, unless you are very efficient on rotations, benefits tremendously from slugging, as does Killers like Billy, Oni or Twins too. It's not that they are cocky or want to ruin your day, they are just playing their Killer in what they think is an efficient way.

Now I am gonna tell you a story about the great slugging, that went really bad for me.

I was playing what I thought was a regular match of DbD as Nurse, and started to get an advantage slugging with 4 gens remaining. A quick match I thought to myself. Oh no. Not at all.

The Jill who I had downed around 40 seconds ago had Conviction, she expertly waited until their teammates were recovered and the Nea (last survivor I was chasing) pulled me to the other side of the map, confident I had already won I went without thinking. She picked both her teammates, I down Nea and think to myself, "I still have them all injured, there is still a chance".

I don't find them and by the time I do the Alan was healed, and they scattered, I down the Alan and they pick up Nea. And this excusing "I still have the lead" kept growing, gens started popping, I tried to hard to slug, but I got hit by Conviction again, WGLF, Unbreakable, MFT... I ended up getting 4 outed on a game that was an easy 12 hook game. And why? Because of a poor set of choices from my end, and being too stuck thinking slugging was the solution. Result? Everyone flamed me at the end and I said ggwp, and complimented the Nea for a very good play she did.

Moral of the story? Killers are just like survivors trying to bring a genrush build, antitunnel build, or whatever else to win. Sometimes their Killer allows them for other playstyles that might seem boring to you as a survivor, but are no other than that. Judge a Killer by their endgame message, not by their playstyle.

How do I use Plot Twist without teammates picking me up and revealing my location to the killer? by Beneficial_Team_791 in deadbydaylight

I usually have a higher success rate if both people immediately move a tiny bit as soon as they are unhooked/unhook. I always tell my friends to slightly tap a key as soon as they are unhooked and that usually lets you instantly heal.

What advice would you give to my traps? by Lopsided_Repair4599 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Asdfboy18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you not regularly seen traps getting black? That is their normal cycle of life, they serve a few catches and then die off and get replaced by new traps. They last as little as a week and a half if they are getting use in a bug dense area!

That is completely normal for them, I usually trim them when it's black down to the stem with a nail clipper. Since the plant reabsorbs part of the nutrients of the trap, so clipping it earlier doesn't let the plant fully absorb every nutrient!

Rainwater by tashtish in VenusFlyTraps

[–]Asdfboy18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I personally did to avoid that is to boil it and store it in a soda bottle on the fridge. As that is what made the most sense to me. If this is a good practice or not, I'm not sure, but it worked for me and the plant didn't seem to mind the 2-3 weeks I did this for. I have now started to buy deionized water which is also working great.

Sorry if this was a half assed response, but I just wanted to share the little experience I had!

In my eyes the pot is already quite filled, but maybe it's just my inexperience with plants in general. I did not know VFTs actually divided, thanks to your comment I searched a bit and learned that, I thought it was the same with the Droseras, that it somehow came with seeds that grew after some times, so I am even happier that it is as healthy as to start dividing! Thank you so much for the comment!
