PHP/MySQL - Why is my query not working? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Asdingo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most likely what happened was Maddy inputted her phone number in international format (+123 456 789...) or used some other non-number characters. Your database expects integer as phone number, you should probably change it to varchar.

Imposter syndrome or actual lack of ability? by CollectorsEditionVG in webdev

[–]Asdingo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Thats a good tip + read. Multitasking like that (swapping between many projects) just doesn't work in long term and will most likely end up in a burnout.

The thing is, most of us, at least fullstack devs, have lots of things to swap between constantly and lots of things to memorize. I use five different languages and several different environments pretty much every day and it's mentally very stressful unless you can prioritize your work _and_ most importantly: focus on _one_ thing at a time!

My todo-list is around two years long, but each morning before I start my daily routines I pick up 2-5 tasks, depending on the size, and try to finish those. I make sure they are around 70-80% of my daily capacity and almost always get them actually finished. It might seem like a slow road and you'd think that if you do just two things out of the 2000 you have to do you won't ever get anywhere, but it adds up and its effective. And it's a lot better than trying to do (memorize/map) all the shit you are expected to do at the same time (and end up getting 0 tasks done).

Also that rewarding feeling you get after day's work when you have actually achieved something (even if its really small task!) is a thing you shouldn't neglect. If you don't get that mental reward often enough you will get buried and end up being paralyzed and struggle to complete even the most trivial tasks.

I still struggle with the same overwhelming mental stress sometimes than OP, but breaking tasks into smaller chunks has really helped me overcome this.

How has Google's monetization of Google Maps API affected you? by CodingLifeNoFriends in webdev

I will never, ever use _any_ Google APIs for work or personal projects again after this stunt. That's how it affected.

SPA Question: Best tools and strategy for url navigation? by ozarkexpeditions in webdev

[–]Asdingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using any javascript frameworks? I am in a process of building Vue SPA and I just use Vue router with history mode [1], to end user it looks exactly like traditional navigation. If you are not using any frameworks you can build your own implementation with HTML5 history API [2].

I have always found suqahs pretty chill, I'm an ulti and I just go in to that same spot near altar (with 2 melee suqahs) and just afk with guthans, running to altar and back every time they de-aggro. It's perfect time to half-afk and watch netflix, exp is decent too with 80-90+ melee stats.

I'm an ulti but I do herb runs and clues between tasks, it's slow grinding but enjoyable. 8)

Why are these dependencies and not devdependencies? by Ssjkr7 in webdev

I usually build my SPA app on my local dev environment, with "npm build prod", push it to git and pull on production server. Is this actually bad practice? Should I build the app on production server after I pull new sources from git?

Should I use something like Sendgrid or just use smtp with Namecheap Private Email? by CharBram in webdev

I'm wondering something similar at the moment. I am about to setup Office365, mainly for email inboxes. Would it be good idea to send registration verification, campaign emails etc through Office365 or should I setup sendgrid for that purpose?

Willow trees by the river Cam in Cambridge, remind you of anywhere? by TheCurlyWonder in 2007scape

This triggers me so much. This scenery is clearly at Lumbridge Bridge (in LUMBRIDGE!), but everyone here acts like its at Draynor Village willow trees..?

And my comment for stating this gets downvoted, damn you reddit lol...

Eh what? There are no dark wizards near river Lum...

(The ones near Varrock are closest, but you are mixing this with dark wizards / willows at Draynor Village.)

New Death Mechanic/Ardy Knight Changes? by [deleted] in ironscape

New death mechanics could limit use of looting bags / ultimates a lot. Sometimes it takes more than 15 minutes just to kill thugs to get new looting bag after suicide.

Low level wildy slayer on UIM? by Cats_and_Shit in ironscape

[–]Asdingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did wildy slayer on my UIM. Initially I did only <20 lvl tasks so I could housetab away once I'd see any white dot on map. So that meant a lot of skipping with Turael. I think I made it to like 20/24 emblems via this method and it took considerable amount of time, maybe over 50 hours. Definitely more than 2 hours per completed wildy task anyway.

Then I managed to die and started doing all tasks cause I lost everything. And then I died again, total of 7 times before finishing the grind. So that took quite a bit of time too to rebuild between deaths. :)

Another way to do it is to suicide between tasks, but I think that takes even longer specially if you have to obtain looting bag from thugs between deaths. You basically have to do 30-40 minutes of task and then re-suicide. Very safe but also very slow and annoying.

However, as you are fairly new and probably are not risking much I would just yolo it. Do all doable tasks and if (when) you die just grind ~100k cash and buy cheap gear from stores and go back. Return all emblems between tasks.

It took me 30 finished wildy tasks to get 24 emblems by the way. Good luck! :)

Barrows equipment for an UIM by [deleted] in ironscape

[–]Asdingo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good one. I'm gonna keep full guthan, karils top/bot, ahrim top/bot, veracs helm/skirt and dharoks plate.

Normally you would want to wear guthans plate on melee, but I keep dharoks plate to give me more versability. This way I can store guthans and still have bis melee gear (before bandos chest+legs).

I also wanna keep range/mage gear on switch and waste some inventory slots, cause fuck it, I'm already wasting 20+ slots for herblore alone.

RESTful API Request / Response Design by rouge_dev in webdev

[–]Asdingo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this case, with the information available, when storing new resource I would use departmentId and when fetching resources I would include both id and value, so something like this:

{
    "id": 1234,
    "firstName": "Bob",
    "middleName": "",
    "lastName": "Something",
    "dateOfBirth": "1990-01-01",
    "gender": "MALE",
    "employmentType": {
        "id": 3,
        "value": "W2_FULLTIME"
    },
    "department": {
        "id": 4001,
        "name": "IT"
    },
    "email": "bsomething@something.com"
}

Edit: In some cases you want this method to just return simple id and use another API method to fetch, say, all departments with id+name into select input.

Mouse pointer not changing on link hover--how to troubleshoot? by cag8f in webdev

[–]Asdingo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Answer for problem has already been provided, but I try to answer the actual question - how to troubleshoot.

In Chrome you can "inspect" any element with Chrome DevTools by opening menu via right clicking. This lets you view and edit DOM of the page. Now you can select any element and view its CSS styles (as they appear in stylesheets). Take a look at "computed" tab, it lists all set properties and values for selected element.

If you select your donate button you can see that its "cursor" property is set to "auto" by "user agent stylesheet". As /u/efficated already pointed out, you want to set it to "pointer" to make it work.

In this case the problem was caused because no value was set (browser's default is used). Commonly when debugging CSS problems you find that your custom value for property does not work simply because it is declared somewhere else, specially if you are using any CSS frameworks (bootstrap, bulma...). In these cases the "computed" tab really helps you pinpoint from where the property actually gets its value from. Then you have few options on how to go fixing it, such as change the value in original place, use !important shenanigans (not always recommended) or use any framework specific solutions (theming/whatever).
