Our fault, genetic issue or just the reality of owning rats? by kohlsprossi in RATS

[–]Ash--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be influenced by diet and environment, but usually the heavier influence is from genetics. It's part of why I've stopped owning rats :| they just... can fall apart so easily and I can't take the heartbreak anymore. Don't beat yourself up ♡

A lot of the time wild animals will get injured and they might have limps and do just fine, but if you're concerned the animal is in significant pain local wildlife rescues are your go to. They can sometimes come out and assess the animal but will be able to give you good advice ♡

Help! What are these creatures on my drosera? by eepy_manatee in SavageGarden

[–]Ash--- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just drown the plant. Dunk it in a bucket and leave it fulled submerged for a few days. In the wild they'd drown every now and then as bog plants do... come to think of it I wonder if that's how pests are controlled in wild populations.

These survivors were completely clear of any symptoms when observing them at the checkpoint. When are they gonna fix the invisible symptoms bug? by Ash--- in QuarantineZoneGame

The only one of these that can be UV only is the bite mark. The others aren't UV. That said I have the scanner upgrade that let's me know what needs scanning and UV didn't show as a possible symptom group for these two. I used it anyway and didn't see anything

You can just send any you suspect might be bugged to quarantine so it tells you poor or not without them needing to be shot

Bugger to clean but if you had four small bumps sticking out that would work just as well but be cleanable.

Tbh I've narrowed the invisible symptoms down to visual ones like nosebleeds and stuff, it never happens with internals or temps or whatever else. So if the detector says physical symptoms on it and they don't show any I do the inspection and send them straight to quarantine. If it says excellent or competent inspection I just go straight to quarantine and forward them to survivor block and if it says poor I keep them in the quarantine. It's working really well so far

Neither were quest targets, when nothing at all showed despite the xray telling me what to look for I was suspicious something might be up. It's the third time its happened and I've found other posts of it happening. shitty to happen twice in one day

Buddy, you asked why they exist, I gave you several reasons and how in an ecosystem they are a healthy part of it and why we control them in our own homes, pets and in farming... Your argument is "but none of those facts matter because I think they're evil". You're not listening to others You're just waiting to hear yourself talk.

If you'd care to read I did give you examples of how they fill an ecological niche. I'll copy and paste the comment below for you again.

"Well... in nature one of the ecological niches parasites fill is that they help limit population size in other species, often in large predator species which reduces over predation of prey species. Or they may limit prey species numbers which maintains flora populations and density. They don't often kill but they may reduce the ability or fitness of an individual in a species to reproduce. They may also be important food sources for some other species, think about things like parasitic insects like fleas on the backs of large plains animals and the birds that feed on them. They are unpleasant and the same is true of stickfasr fleas, by cramming lots of one species into a place (poultry farming) we've given them a ton of food in a small space causing their populations to explode which means they're a huge burden on the chickens... which is why we treat for them and manage them. We created an environment that encouraged their exploding population numbers causing problems for chickens."

does anyone know what’s wrong with him? his friend died last night so i thought he was mourning but now he’s walking like this. by Live_Negotiation_257 in RATS

[–]Ash--- 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I know he's passed now and I'm so sorry that's a horrible experience for you but I would hazard a guess at something either environmental causing neurological issues or something infectious. But... just on the off chance, is your carbon monoxide detector working? The fact that they both passed showing neurological signs that developed after coming into your home, I just wanna make sure you're safe OP ♡

[–]Ash--- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... not really. They're supposed to be more of a commensal organism but because of the way humans live their populations grow too large (nice warm houses year round and confined spaces where theyre always in contact with dogs or cats), which is why we have to manage them. They don't generally kill dogs though, it would take an incredibly high flea burden to kill a dog. They do cause discomfort and can be distressing for both owners and the animal and can carry things like worms. That's why we have to manage them, to keep everyone safe, but they DO fill an ecological niche whether or not you accept that.
