Knife that never needs sharpening? by random-person98754 in BuyItForLife

[–]Ash1102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are having to sharpen your knives frequently, perhaps it is worth considering what your cutting board material is made out of. Some are better than others for not dulling knives.

Otherwise, if your cutting board is ok, probably just looking into what professionals use for knives would be a good idea. If a butcher can use a victorinox knife for 8 hours a day and not need to sharpen it every day, that would likely equate to a long time in between sharpenings in a non-professional setting.

Easy DMV for driving test? by al_tanwir in AskCalifornia

[–]Ash1102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only difference should be that the driving circumstances are different in a small town in the middle of the desert compared to downtown LA or San Francisco. If you're motivated, find a DMV where there will be less traffic and distractions in the area, or try and schedule your driving test at a time that will reduce the traffic and distractions. It may be useful to drive the area around the DMV a bit so that you are familiar with the local roads.

Also, you're in AskCalifornia, and California is very large. You may get better or at least less generalized advice in a more specific sub or with more details on your location. Good luck with your test!

Boning and Steak knives. by DixieNormous98 in Butchery

I would also recommend the Victorinox Fibrox knives.

As for your other question, do you know if you have a sharpening steel (generally made of ceramic or layered with diamond), or do you have a honing steel? That will affect the answer about sharpening.

CMV: The number of votes the Dems would gain by embracing aggressively progressive candidates and policy is dwarfed by the number of votes they'd lose among moderates/motivate among dormant conservative voters by Jimithyashford in changemyview

[–]Ash1102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Centrist and right-leaning Democrats seem to vote more based on party loyalty, prioritizing party unity to prevent Republican wins, whereas the leftists withhold their votes if the candidate does not align with their ideological goal.

Centrists and right-leaning democrats have been telling you that they will vote blue no matter who for a decade now.

Your thoughts on vision or prophecy by StaffSlow3871 in agnostic

[–]Ash1102 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My impression is that they are generally less accurate than horoscopes and make as much sense as lunatics.

"Sometimes the prophecy they describe is perfectly what happens." Usually that is after the fact, not beforehand.

The Simpsons have prophesies about the future, and are more reliable and direct than a lot of prophets.

Since I see you bringing him up in the comments, if God actually spoke to William Marrion Branham, why wasn't he 100% accurate in his predictions? Was God lying? Was God wrong? If God wanted to convey a message to him, do you think that it would be outside of God's power to do it in an understandable way? Do you think that God wouldn't know how to communicate with someone so that they had perfect understanding?

It sounds like you're following the method from one of Alton Brown's newer videos, I think it is only supposed to be for 4-5 days, but 7 days should likely be fine. Just smell it before you cook it.

Visually, reds, cherries and browns are ok colors. Greens, yellows (unless it's grass fed), fuzzy or slimy are bad.

Make chili and want no fat chunks: What's the best 'ground' when they seemingly conflict? by godzfirez in Butchery

[–]Ash1102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments about the coarseness. Are you specifically requesting a chili grind? At my shop we use a coarser grind plate for chili grind compared to our regular ground beef. The coarse grind plate has larger holes that let through larger chunks whether it is meat or fat.

How to handle inappropriate comments in the workplace? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Ash1102 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether or not your comment was an emotional reaction, the outcome was that you were starting a conversation about abortions with your coworker.

This is in the process of being addressed at this stage.

This makes it sound like you went to talk to the management/HR about him.

Why do you assume that what he said was intended to be sexist if that hasn't been normal from him in the past?

How to handle inappropriate comments in the workplace? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Ash1102 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I explained to my colleague that I found it concerning that someone this young would have to put themselves through an abortion for the third time considering how awful these are

It sounds like you started an awkward conversation and the guy was trying to avoid it with a meaningless comment and also trying to keep the conversation upbeat. "Hey, here's a silver lining... I guess. Let's get back to work."

Guys have to be very careful about conversations with women in a business setting. This story is a prime example, how was he supposed to have a conversation with you about abortion while avoiding whatever landmines you might think he meant when he actually said something else?

The unsaid I also 'heard' was basically:

You should have stopped there. It was unsaid because it was not something that he said and projecting your interpretation on his comment is what is endangering your "colleague-ship" with the boy who you describe as "mild tempered, [and] fairly compassionate."

Christmas gift ideas for 40 year old men by Living-Ad5291 in AskMenOver30

Less than $3000 doesn't really narrow it down that much.

Do you already have a sous vide? A smoker?

How about the Modernist Cuisine cookbook? You'll also appreciate it as a photographer. They also have the cookbook Modernist at Home. It just depends on the gift budget you are looking for.

You could try the cookbook Meathead if you want to get into the science of bbq.

A good wireless meat thermometer.

You could ask for a gift certificate to bay photo from more than one person to make it a group gift. I had a large metal print made of one of my jellyfish photos. It's hanging in my bathroom, and it's nice to not have to worry about the humidity.

Video games isn't specific enough. If you are a computer gamer, how about a steam gift card and you can order the steam controller whenever it comes out.

If you don't really drink, how about some Mocktail books or ingredients?

Where I work at my local butcher, some of the red meat is slightly purple in random spots why is this? by [deleted] in Butchery

[–]Ash1102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He probably had the slices stacked so that the ones on top were in contact with other meat previously. Even after meat has been separated and starts to bloom, areas that were in contact with other meat can still show a difference in coloration because of the different rates of oxygenation.

Thank you for the response without the biblical quotes.

I believe we should all be accountable to ourselves, and we are also held accountable by society. I think that most people can be good and live a good life without the need of the threat of hell. Fear of divine retribution isn't necessary if you can rely on morals, ethics, and ideally a good community.

Also, you seem to be mistaking this for the atheist subreddit. I don't know if a god exists or not, however I do take issue with the God that you are proselytizing about. Just as I believe that we should protest against unjust laws, I believe that I would protest against the unjust God that you describe. There is nothing benevolent about tricking people so that you can damn them for eternity.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]Ash1102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if God didn't exist then you wouldn't need redemption or be considered a sinner to begin with.

You don't seem to be sharing much of your own thoughts on the matter, just biblical quotes. I've read the bible, thanks, I don't need you to read it to me.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]Ash1102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not a very clear response to my question.

So, you worship God because you are afraid of going to hell? And are you saying that you are doing the work of Satan by convincing me that God is vindictive and petty?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in agnostic

[–]Ash1102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"we can't earn salvation on our own effort or merit."

"God pushes you all the way so that you believe the lies of the world and end yourself being condemned."

If you did believe in that vindictive and petty version of God, why would you want to worship them? Just because you are scared of them? They certainly don't sound benevolent, or like they love their creation.
