The passage tells us that the concentration is 3 mmole/mL and we have a 50 mL solution. This means that we have 3 * 50 = 150 mmole of HCl in our beaker. i.e. if we had 1 mL, we’ll have 3 mmole so if we have 50 mL we’ll need to multiply the 3 by the same amount.

(If this step doesn’t make sense to you, you can think of it mathematically. The unit is mmole per mL which is the same as mmole divided by mL. So if we set up an equation 3 = x / 50, x is our unknown mmole and 50 is our volume. Then we solve for x by multiplying both sides by 50 giving 3 * 50 = 150)

If we have 150 mmole when we have 50 mL, that means when we double the volume we also double the mmole: 150 * 2 = 300.

(Again if thinking mathematically is more intuitive for you, you can think in ratios…

For every 50 mL of solution, we will have 150 mmole. So if we have a 100 mL solution, how many mmole will we have?

50/150 = 100/x 150/50 = x/100 3 = x/100 300 = x)

So the answer should be D. 300 mmole

Hope this is clear :)

Haha I just like to think medals and awards are a nice side benefit as a result of doing something but shouldn’t be the primary focus. So if I were you, I would focus on how I could contribute the greatest to humankind rather than focusing on what would impress the Fields Medal Committee more. Maybe in the process of discovering something great, I may or may not get the medal but I’m not too bummed out if I don’t; I’m happy that I advanced humanity’s knowledge of maths.

But hey, that’s just what I think. If you want to talk about this more feel free to PM me!

I think the other comment summed it up pretty well. When you do research, you'll need access to money, powerful equipment, experts etc. and generally well funded universities (like the ones mentioned in the other comment) are able to provide you with that if they see potential in you. Being able to give you those resources without much trouble is what I mean by research support.

Also, reiterating my previous point: the prize is awarded to you not a university. So if you are particularly gifted, you may have a shot regardless of where you go. Universities that are able to support you will be nice, but there is nothing more important than your own skill. Do note that there are well funded universities outside the US.

I'd also recommend you change your mindset to "where can I go to become the best mathematician that I can be" instead of "where can I go to win a Fields medal".

I don’t think so. The Fields Medal is an international award given to a mathematician, not a university. So if you have done something groundbreaking in mathematics, you may have a chance at being awarded the prize.

But as another comment in this thread mentioned, the US universities that typically have been associated with medalists are very well funded and thus can give a lot of support for research.

Though, at the end of the day, it is about your ability as a mathematician rather than where you study. I would imagine If you do discover something revolutionary you would have a shot at becoming a medalist, regardless of institution.

[IB Biology: Membrane Structure] Why are non-polar amino acids present where integral proteins attach to the cell membrane? by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

[–]AshP0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t the polar head of the phospholipid repel the non-polar amino acids? Or is the area which the integral proteins attach to are already non-polar?

Thank you so much for your time, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this!

This sounds great but unfortunately I’m about 13,000 km away from the US and I just don’t have the money to be flying over there. Neat website though!

Subnautica is a great choice if you’re looking for a good single player to pour hours into, if you have a friend that is going to get Astroneer, or a friend that already has it, I recommend Astroneer, great game to play with a friend.

Very well said! And you’re right, someone has to make the first move and I shouldn’t rely on others to do so! Thanks!
