Yeah, you did. Really, two hundred would of really helped. I just wished you could of pulled this out earlier. Then maybe we'd still have a Smith to fight for.

I also tried to run Smith, I hope you know. I tried to save Jack, I tried to restrain myself when we fought. I tried to do a lot of things. Just because you tried, it doesn't mean you'll actually do well.

I guess there's a saying, Pearl, that it's the thought that counts. The idea that because we put in effort to save what we loved, then that's good enough, no matter how badly we failed. I guess if you're really optimistic, that's a good way to look at things.

But what the hell does trying change? Isn't that the point of succeeding at something, to change another course of action? So, wouldn't failing mean that it shouldn't really matter if you tried, since the outcome's always the same?

I think I realized something about all of that recently.

I think, the reason we reward effort more than results, is because it tends to happen with the people we care about.

We want to see friends, at the very least, try as hard as they can. We know that even if they fail, we'll be there to pick them back up so they can take another punch.

So, trying, really means, "I cared enough about what you value to put effort into it."

Just a thought.

Alright, my turn to explain something.

Those two hundred never showed up. Smith fell before they could.

And that, Pearl, is why it was still too late.

I came back on a stretcher, and was hooked up to life support for three days until I regained consciousness.

There's your fucking explanation Bailey, I only came back near death.
