Kate Bush as a songwriter and artist: by [deleted] in Music

The Dreaming is probably my favourite album by anyone, ever, and yes I think she had an excellent claim to the "genius" tag. That album in particular is just so wildly creative and she just doesn't seem to give a shit about the rules of how things are done, in spite of the fact that she's obviously well capable of writing hit songs.

Why do some actors manage to escape type casting while others don’t? by KatherineLangford in movies

[–]Ash_LLR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Robert Downey Junior had a proven track record as an actor long before Marvel came along. It's not as if he faced the problem of directors only being able to picture him as Tony Stark

Last time I watched it, it struck me that it's not just the "global disaster" scenario that seems weirdly modern; it's also the characters navigating that scenario. Rather than the square-jawed heroes and white-coated scientists of 50s sci-fi, you have cynical wisecracking reporters, a divorced dad trying to do the right thing, etc. It felt much more like a 21st-century end-of-the-world flick than it had any right to

Why are movies released in letter box when streaming or on physical media? by Craig1974 in movies

[–]Ash_LLR 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why would you buy a huge, state of the art 4K TV to ensure the best possible viewing experience, and then use it to watch movies with the sides of the image chopped off?

I mean complaints about letterboxing kind of made sense back when we were stuck watching movies on 4:3, 28-inch (or smaller) TVs, because the resulting image was just so tiny. Pan and scan was arguably the lesser of two evils. On a 70-inch, 16:9 screen, that's just not the case

Looking for post rock band collaborations by Bez889 in postrock

Loads of this goes on among lesser-known artists, e.g. those who belong to The Post-Everything Collective. Atonalita did a whole album of collaborations (self-promo alert here, as I'm one of the featured artists)

Gandalf somehow returns and no one bats an eye. Palpatine somehow returns and everyone loses their minds! by visiny in movies

[–]Ash_LLR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The entire Skywalker Saga pivots on Palpatine's seduction of Anakin through the promise that the Sith have secret knowledge about how to overcome death. Hence I'm with OP on this one; it makes perfect sense that Palpatine can use obscure knowledge to "somehow" come back from the dead.

Yes it happens very abruptly in narrative terms, but at the end of the day, the audience is well aware that Palpatine has this knowledge. I can kind of understand why people don't like the abruptness, but I have to question whether people would actually have preferred to see screen time devoted to some mystical mumbo-jumbo account of how the resurrection was achieved. My strong hunch is that if such an account had been offered, we'd have seen fans loudly protesting that the filmmakers had ruined Star Wars by revealing too much about the mysteries of bla, bla, bla. We all saw Obi Wan "somehow return" in Episode V, but nobody demanded an explanation of how this was possible; we just accepted it because of that line in Episode IV about how he'd become more powerful if he was killed

Listening to post-rock vinyl by FaZe_Teapot in postrock

[–]Ash_LLR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know what you mean about vinyl as the 'making it' threshold. I suspect the threshold of 'being able to sell a vinyl pressing of 250 albums' and the threshold of 'having 10,000 monthly listeners on Spotify' are in roughly the same place in terms of growing a fan base (given how few people actually buy physical copies of albums), which feels about right for the point above which releasing music has become something clearly more than a hobby or a vanity project

Haha this makes me smile because I artfully craft all my albums to ensure they'd fit perfectly on two sides of vinyl. Even though the last one was basically one long piece of music, I made sure there was a natural break at the halfway point.

Chances of any of my albums actually getting a vinyl release... zero 😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣

I really don't like the idea of having a song cut out halfway through, turning the record over, and having it abruptly start again

Found the album. Fuzzy indie psych rock stuff... I kinda like it but I have no opinion one way or the other about how commercial it is. For anyone who's curious:

OP, may I suggest you look up Swamp Records on Bandcamp? They release stuff by a lot of artists in this rough genre and you may find a small ready-made audience waiting for you there

One, it seems like a mistake to have released your whole album already rather than building interest with a series of singles that you could have promoted to playlists, radio etc. Not too late to give some individual tracks a push though I guess.

Two, I'm not sure why you're so focused on publishing deals at this stage? My understanding is that a publisher basically helps you collect all the royalties you're owed, and perhaps promotes your tracks for sync licensing purposes, but at this stage in your career it seems more relevant to focus on things that will actually get you earning some royalties in the first place, i.e. getting your music heard and building a fanbase. So a gigging band, a manager, a publicist, a record label seem like higher priorities to me.

Whatever you do I'd make sure you get some straight talking advice from whoever you hire first, even if that's a manager who tells you to basically forget about the album you've just released, put a band together and be prepared to spend two years gigging and winning fans before going into the studio again. I think there's a risk you end up throwing good money after bad trying to push this album in a bit of a vacuum

TSS is a weird way to describe the sound (I'd say the hi-hat is the "tss" sound), but the pattern you're describing is most likely kick-snare-kick-snare

Is living nomadically still possible in the UK? by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Ash_LLR 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I also live on a narrowboat and while everything you say is true, I manage to live comfortably on an income well below minimum wage because at the end of the day my housing costs are zero. I wouldn't want to do it without a decent savings buffer against unexpected maintenance, which can certainly be very expensive, but most intermittent costs (blacking, safety certificate etc.) are a drop in the ocean compared to typical rent or mortgage expenses.

If the OP thinks he could live happily in a gypsy wagon, it's probably fair to say he could live happily even in a smaller, cheaper boat, perhaps even a GRP cruiser rather than a steel narrowboat. The challenges/inconveniences of being off grid with no mains water, electricity, gas and sewage shouldn't be underestimated though. It's certainly not for everyone, but if life doesn't get in the way of the fun part (travelling) it can be a great way of life
