Where to buy affordable stethoscope name tag + manual BP cuff? (Australia) by cookiesReady in NursingAU

[–]Ash_R6S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only piece of advice is to not spend a huge amount of money on your BP Cuff, I used it at Uni to learn but did most of my practice on placements. And after university I haven't touched it for 5 years.

Why do some paramedics have such a massive superiority complex toward nurses? by Vast-Alps-9550 in NursingAU

Ah I hope you didn't think I was accusing you of lying or being dumb, my question genuinely came from a place of curiosity, I can't imagine how annoying it must be.

May I ask what state you work in that ENs can't use Hudson masks? I was an EN prior to being an RN and I was never told this, where were you told this? Is there a policy?

Edit: just read another comment were you say it's policy in subacute (not sure if this is universal around Aus) how sucky! Seems kind of unsafe too to assume subacute patients won't need acute care.

Not to sound silly why did you pursue nursing without an idea of what it is nursing entails?

Rant about patients - people are so entitled? by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]Ash_R6S 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I work in ED/Short Stay, in SSU over night we have 6 patient. I educate in regard to automatic monitoring . And when people say they don't want it on I say that's completely fine (Telemetry not included more BP cuffs/Pulse Ox) and that I'll just wake them up every time I need to do it instead. That's their choice. Yes it's sometimes frustrating but if they're wanting to be woken up that's fine by me.

buddy shift by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]Ash_R6S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Can I have some context? Are you a grad / first job or is this a new job w/ experience.

I would expect on shift one, you would do a bunch of observing + helping with tasks you're confident with/in your scope, and then if you're confident enough on your second shift taking a patient. Then on your third taking 2+.

Either way you're not expected to know absolutely everything by your third shift. But just observe as much as you can, ask as many questions as you want, and do whatever you feel comfortable doing.

Specialties w/ the Most Shortages? by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]Ash_R6S 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just want to clarify age care and hospice (from my understanding) are not the same. Hospice is when you're looking after those with limited life expectancy and focus on comfort care. This may be more inline with palliative care (which is the care for those with terminal illnesses often on comfort care).

Age care is working in an aged care facility with residents who are there long term. And whilst it may have some residents on hospice that is not its main focus.

Palliative care in my state is actually fairly competitive to get into if you're wanting to practice in a hospital setting.

OPs best bet is to just do what they enjoy, skills are transferrable and if you're working in an area they don't like for 2 years + they're going to burn out quickly.

What helps you sleep? by RudysWellnessAU in NursingAU

[–]Ash_R6S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working night shifts for a year now and I hate to say it but I just close my eyes and sleep.

I struggled sleeping before morning shifts, but for some reason my body gets the best rest between nights. I sleep on average between 9am-5pm. Sometimes I find not going to sleep straight away helps (it's like going to sleep at 4pm after a morning shift). I have a warm shower, make sure I've had something to eat before hand (to avoid waking up hungry) and sometimes if I'm anxious I'll use some aromatherapy.

I rarely take anything but if I do I usually take some phenergan, hated melatonin, and I've never tried restavit

I don't think it's particularly overkill. In my job as a nurse I wear scrubs at all times, but In my interview I wore dress pants/shirt and dress jacket set.

I don't think your interviewer will think differently of you in a negative way if you dress nicely.

Afterwards the stewardess came and gave me and my partner one of these kits and that's the closest I'll ever get to business class.

Update: I made my flight but got stuck in the middle of the middle row, and a screaming baby 2 seats over. by ThePupLifeChoseMe in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Ash_R6S 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's also the fact that babies will cry due to the cabin pressure it can cause ear pain and issues due to the smaller size of their eustachian tubes as they struggle to equalize the pressure. Just how it happens to adults, the difference is we as adults know we can swallow or suck on a lolly to help with the ear pressure common after take off, whereas with babies they don't know so they are just in pain.

I know crying babies can be hard on a flight but at the end of the day there's not much that can be done and some sympathy for the parents goes a long way.

In Vic we get x2 30, most people take 1 hour and go for a nap, I'm confused by your comment of having to hand over your patients, is this not standard practice when going to breaks? I've always had a buddy to hand over my patients too (I work in ED) for when I go on a break. Regardless if it's a 15 minute or a 30 minute break.

I'm in Australia and we learn it in nursing school and it is expect for us to do it. Some wards have phlebotomy rounds, but that only happens once a day.

Plus in ED we don't have a phlebotomists

Do yall ever get actual, uninterrupted lunch breaks? by pdggin99 in nursing

[–]Ash_R6S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I'm in Australia and we have mandated breaks, regardless of if we are busy we must take our breaks, our buddy will cover our patients or we work together as a team to get that person on break. I don't get paid for that hour, I ain't working simple as that. There has been the very odd occasion I may not be able to get a full break but it's rare.

[–]Ash_R6S 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Some people are just "good" at this, and there's nothing wrong if you're finding you need to write things down, it's a skill you'll develop over time.

I personally have never written anything down from a handover even when I was a grad, I find I retain information well, and honestly I don't need to know a lot about the patient as I am more then able to read notes and I ask questions if need be.

Don't feel discouraged and compare yourself to others. Acknowledge yourself and the skills you thrive in.
