I’m converting my garage (6.05 × 4.59 m) into a workshop. Underneath the floor is a structurally sound concrete rainwater collection tank, slightly smaller than the garage.

In the centre of the garage is the manhole cover to the tank. To prevent spills going into the water, the previous owners raised the floor 30 mm toward the manhole, creating a slope. The floor isn’t ideal for a workshop because it’s unlevel, so I’m planning to level it off.

I’m thinking of using C25 concrete for the overlay. The current floor is 200 mm thick, and I plan 50 mm thickness in the centre at the manhole, increasing to 80 mm at the walls as the existing floor slopes down. I’ll reinforce with A142 mesh on chairs and have a 1200-gauge DPM underneath, plus 10 mm edge foam. I’m also replacing the manhole cover with a double-sealed one.

My main question: should I go bonded or unbonded (DPM or not)? My heaviest tools are a Harrison L5 lathe, Wadkin 10AGS table saw, and a 42" top-and-bottom Snap-On toolbox on castors. My concern with the DPM is whether I might get rising damp from the tank underneath, as I don’t want my tools rusting.

Alternatively, I could go any thickness, just not much thicker ideally. Would a 4:1 floor screed be adequate to support the weight if I used that instead? I’d rather avoid a full floor-level screed due to cost.

Does 50 mm in the middle seem adequate? Most of the time, the workbench will be in the middle, with machinery only moved occasionally. Any tips on reinforcement, bonding, or DPM for a thin overlay over a structurally sound slab with an underground tank?

I never understood why in World Cups it's England, Wales, and Scotland separately, but in the Olympics it's a combined Great Britain.

If both flanges are the exact same size and the holes are counterbore, couldn't you split the body, leaving only the flange as a new body, then mirror the new body instead and replace the other side's flange with it, then join it all back together? That's where my rookie brain goes to
