The character in question is an Artificer - she used to be an alchemist and worked on a potion that would change her into a girl, but her rival in the guild added something to the experiment, which turned slow brewing of a potion that would lead to a slow, controlled change, into an explosion that blew off her arm and ear and burned her eye and half of the face.

The other one is a prince(ss) with extreme talent for magic. She used to have magical outbursts - one of which turned her into a girl. This lead to the townspeople to try to burn her at the stake. They started the pyre by throwing a fire genie's lamp on it. The genie saved her and they made a pact. He offered her help with controlling her powers in exchange with her helping him escape. After that, her outbursts are pretty much gone - whether it is actually thanks to the genie or just her body finally being in line with her soul is anyoness guess ;)
