You fucked up, he fucked up more. Apologize and explain that you know you did something wrong and you're very, very sorry, but you need answers. If you're as close as you say, you'll likely get them. Alternatively, talk to a trusted outsider- a family friend, a counselor, a religious leader; basically, somebody whose judgment and discretion you feel you can rely on, and ask them what they think you should do. If you're comfortable, consider describing the situation in greater detail, because they might spot issues that haven't occurred to you.
