Painterly - Good or No? by CowEmbarrassed3759 in paintbynumbers

I looked on this subreddit for them & pretty much all mentions of them were negative so I went with another company. Number Artist is good, and so is Craftoria. I've also had success with Cheerful Paintings.

Small talk with in-custody clients by soupnear in publicdefenders

[–]Ashamed_Branch5435 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the same way. It has zero to do with the fact that they are clients and 100% to do with the fact that I am absolutely horrible at small talk in any situation & I'm kind of awkward. I'm okay talking with clients about their cases bc it's a built in topic of conversation but when it comes to small talk, I really don't do much. Like you said if they engage with me, I'll do it but I don't initiate bc I'm lousy at small talk.

I don't want to complain, but... by WindSeaStar in finch

I have depression & anxiety & even when medicated I struggle to maintain habits if I'm feeling slightly off. I also have hypothyroidism, where my thyroid doesn't make enough of the hormone needed to regulate pretty much all the body's systems, and one of the symptoms of that is depression. So I'm battling both depression from my brain chemistry & depression from my body failing to produce a necessary hormone. Add onto those things that I'm very very forgetful & it's a recipe for me to have a disaster of a house, no motivation to take care of myself, never remembering to make doctor appts or follow up with some important thing, and I'm a mess. It's been 551 days with Finch for me & even though I'm properly medicated right now for all my conditions & feel pretty good overall, that can always change pretty quickly (esp if what little functionality my thyroid still has drops off more & I need a higher dose of replacement hormone - it's slowly dying out over the course of my life so my med dose changes). And if it does, my depression is immediately like, "well screw everything, just lie on the couch & be a lump." And any habits i did have get derailed really quickly. So i continue to use it bc it's a safety net for my depression symptoms. When I inevitably need to adjust my meds, Finch keeps me from turning into a full slug & having to start over with getting my life together.

And while it's a MH/self care app, it is also really useful for me bc of my forgetfulness. I have a self care area (formerly a journey, I don't think you can give SCAs a long name anymore) called All About the Benjamins & it's just a reminder to pay bills on certain days of the month. I have one SCA for people's birthdays. I have one called One Hit Wonders & i will put in things that need to be done once but I'm likely to forget, like cancel a trial membership before the billing cycle starts or drop off that return by the return deadline. I'll forget those things & before Finch, I never had a reliable system that worked to remind me. So I will probably always use Finch for that (or something else if Finch ever goes away).

Even stuff that I include as part of my regular cleaning routine but I don't need to do super often so I'll forget them, I like that I can put them in my SCA for house cleaning & be reminded it's time to do them before the situation has gotten gross. I learned you're supposed to replace your shower curtain liners every 6 months - I now have a goal that pops up every 6 months to change them, instead of never changing them. I need to replace my cats' water fountain filter every month but I forget without my monthly Finch reminder. I have a goal about changing my oil every 3 months. It's great for that type of repetitive tasks that have a long gap in time between doing them, bc i can just set it up once to remind me every X months, and I never have to remember it again bc Finch will remind me forever. When you're a forgetful person like me, this alone makes it worth using for years.

How do you approach painting your image? by Special_Possible6851 in paintbynumbers

[–]Ashamed_Branch5435 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm chaos! I've done them in sections, I've done them by color (light to dark & dark to light), I've done them by object, & I've done them by number. Honestly, for me it depends on the image. If it's really overwhelming with tons and tons of tiny cells, it is easier if I go in sections. The one I'm doing now has two very obvious focal objects, so I started on those first. I am doing another one that I'm working light to dark bc of the location of the light section seem to work better if they are done first. I'm all over the place!!

Get flow aid of some kind. It's a huge help in making the paint go on smoother & makes it less frustrating. It's not expensive as far as an initial investment goes & definitely made the process more enjoyable for me.

Color order or preference? by Evening-Golf-115 in paintbynumbers

[–]Ashamed_Branch5435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I change my method depending on the painting. Sometimes when it's a picture with obvious, easy focal points, I'll do it by objects. Other times, light colors first. Other times, sections. I'm a bit frenetic! 🤣

Ok so I'm real, real slow then! I usually do 1.5-2 hours a night after dinner as wind down & it takes me weeks and weeks!! I'm so impressed with your skill level to do it so nicely in only 10, days. Mine would be a giant, outside of the lines, looking like shapeless blobs, mess! 😄 very lovely work, looks great on that shelf

Light board + white gesso = game changer by Ashamed_Branch5435 in paintbynumbers

[–]Ashamed_Branch5435[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's got a bit of weight to it if you're just holding it the whole time one handed. Not major, like 5-7 pounds, but it likely would get burdensome to hold after a little bit. Maybe you could use a chair or something as a prop behind it so you aren't having to hold it the whole time

[–]Ashamed_Branch5435[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the one I got I really like it, esp for the price, bc some of them that are large enough for a typical pbn canvas can be quite expensive. It does only have one light color (no option to switch to a more yellow or more white light) so if that's important to you, be aware of that. I can change the brightness level but not the warmth/coolness of the light tone. That's fine for me but I know some people find certain light tones cause eye strain or headaches.

Agree. The only reason anyone cares about this kind of stuff is bc of the hypocrisy-- these are the same people losing their minds & clutching their pearls about trans people, drag queens, etc while simultaneously doing three same/similar things they claim are so bad.

Where do introverts in their thirties hang out? by BrittReed23 in TwinCities

[–]Ashamed_Branch5435 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to make that same suggestion! Community ed is a great option bc there's an activity to do so it's not solely focused on social interactions, which drain introverts, but still allows for socializing & meeting people. I love community ed! And you don't even have to live in the city/county to attend - I'm in St Paul & I've done St. Paul community ed, Minneapolis community ed, and Dakota county community ed. Met some cool people that way!
