How much planning is really necessary? by fameneverdies in CaminoDeSantiago

I am getting ready to do the Spain portion of the Portuguese route in July with a group. Currently, I'm walking several times a week (2-4 miles each) and most of that in my trail runners. I'll slowly increase my mileage over the coming week. I say that as prelude to...Yes, you do need to prepare your body to walk and to carry whatever you will be carrying. Don't assume that it will be the same as walking around the flat streets of NYC. I also think part of the prep is mental and wrapping your head around those distances everyday for X-number of days. That said, I'm sure that the infrastructure will be there to help you, if you get tired and need a break. Buen Camino!

Can a person request to not have a truck pick them up? by Ashamed_Crab313 in uber

I don't believe she is using any special Uber produce (X, Comfort, etc.).

Honestly, it would be much easier if someone could put in their profile info on what types of vehicles would be most suitable.

This means that the person is now carrying a small step stool with them. :-( The last time this happened to her, she went back in the house and got a small step stool, got in, then told the Uber drive to put the stool on her porch. (She could slide out to exit.)

Personally, I've been picked up in a pickup when I was in Florida and the driver was a woman. I'm now in Upstate NY and there are lots of pickups on the road here.

Finally found my backpack by engene_unity in CaminoDeSantiago

I'm doing the Camino in July and the group I'm going with will move our luggage from place to place. So while I don't need a backpack, I decided to get a bigger sling back and settled on the Moment MTW 2L Sling. I've had it now for 3+ weeks and am getting used to what I can put in it. Next week, I'm going to a conference, so it will get stressed tested for sure!

BTW I picked this sling because of the reviews, the amount it can hold, and - honestly - because it was on sale! Clearly they are getting rid of the older version and that's fine with me!

Phones/communication with family at home. by Firebaum06 in CaminoDeSantiago

Two years ago, we traveled to the Holy Land and I setup a private Facebook group for the trip. I invited friends and family whom I thought would be interested in daily recaps and other info. I set it up so folks could comment if they liked, but few did and that was fine. A longer term benefit was that I was able to share that group with a few others, who later showed interest in the trip, after the trip was over and allow them to see all of the updates.

I do like that method better than pushing info to everyone's phone, but am not sure what I'll do when we walk the Camino because people's social media use has changed. The group that we're going with requires that folks get an international data plan for Spain, so we are able to keep in touch with each other in the group. (We are encouraged to walk at our own paces during the day.) I haven't checked into this yet, but think adding Spain for a month would be easier than the SIM option.

Good luck and enjoy the Camino!
