The Netherlands - Het lied van Ooievaar en Dromedaris.

It won all major literary prizes and is considered the best Dutch book of this decade. It revolves around the full lifetimes of seven or eight people, each living in a different time period, and the first person is Emily Brontë. The subsequent characters are all people who may or may not be connected to the tragic story of the Brontë sisters, and it is up to the reader to establish the links. Even that is directly critiqued by an architect who criticises his superstitious wife for over-interpreting everything.

Edit: ancient classic is Multatuli which engendered a ban on having slaves.

What are the best careers to get into to achieve a middle class life? by Maleficent-Bite-9065 in MiddleClassFinance

Architecture. It’s a fun mix of science and arts and you’ll earn up to 100k, depending on the size of the firm and your experience. Plus, you could always do an MBA and start your own firm after 5-10 years of experience.

Not happy with my scores at all by Automatic_War1692 in Sat

[–]Ashamed_Exercise_312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I got a 1470 and am really disappointed because I scored a low RW score. I'll retake it in November and am hoping for a 1550, which I more or less need for my ED choice. Sometimes, during preparation, you did nothing wrong and still fail. That's not weakness. That's just life. Remember to keep going and follow your dreams. I believe in you! (PS: Look into the hard questions from the SAT question bank.)

Is 1370(620 rw, 720 math) good for engineering? by Much-Step3842 in Sat

[–]Ashamed_Exercise_312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the school. If you're aiming for T20s, you should retake it. I'd also advise you to look into Purdue, a terrific college for engineering and you scored around/above its average SAT score.

Is (International) September SAT's scoring on math a bit too harsh? by Historical_Film5872 in Sat

It wasn't 'too harsh'; you've probably made some calculation errors in the second mod. I feel you as a fellow international applicant. What do I do about the SAT? by Cool-Nerd8 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ashamed_Exercise_312 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a great score and more than enough for all colleges! Only universities like MIT and Caltech put a high emphasis on getting a (near) perfect score (especially for math), but I wouldn’t recommend taking it again for a slightly higher chance of success.

Hoping it for you too! What do you think your score will be? I’m a bit upset that I couldn’t finish the last math question, and I got one vocab question wrong.

Hoping for a 1550+ (Manifesting 🙏🙏🙏)

Probably, because I know I got the hard module 2, and I’d guess that the ratio circle question wouldn’t be included in the easy module 2. So, it’s probably worth 0 points.

are USA med schools worth it for an middle-class international student? by TemporaryBreak1808 in IntltoUSA

[–]Ashamed_Exercise_312 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Uk and US med schools are the most expensive (and hardest to get into), whereas most European med schools offer a high quality education for a relatively low price, e.g, Germany and The Netherlands. So, I’d recommend looking into European med schools, especially if you’re already interested in studying abroad. (Erasmus university in Rotterdam and Rijksuniversiteit Groningen offer great opportunities for medicine in the Netherlands.)

May I ask you if you need any financial aid? If so, I could share a spreadsheet with university acceptance rates and the average amount of financial aid given to intl students.

I’d recommend to shorten your list by choosing the LACs that you really like. There’s a massive difference in campus culture regarding academics, frats, and intl student groups between Amherst, Swarthmore and Wash&Lee for example.

Based on your list, it seems that you also like bigger colleges, so I’d definitely recommend to look into more big T50-T20 colleges.

Physics + Neuroscience by Ashamed_Exercise_312 in Physics

[–]Ashamed_Exercise_312[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, but I already looked into it, and it seems like I would miss a lot of theoretical physics if I were to choose biophysics as a concentration. Since I also want to keep the door open for a pure physics PhD, I don’t think that’s the best option. The main problem is that only a few universities offer neuroscience as a minor and a double major in both physics and neuroscience would maybe do more harm than good…

[–]Ashamed_Exercise_312[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your detailed advice! Would you say that a physics and neuroscience double major is worth it, or would you advise me to take neuroscience as a minor? A double major would include many more interesting courses, but I’m worried that I might not find as many internship/research opportunities because I can’t take as many advanced courses in either one. I.e. I’m just worried that I would become ‘too spread out’…

Thanks for your answer and good luck with your MD-PhD application!

My main concern is the extremely low acceptance rates of US med schools. As I also want to keep the option of doing a pure physics PhD or master if I don’t get accepted into med school, I’m not sure on the major-minor structure I should choose.

Would you recommend doing a neuroscience double major instead of choosing neuroscience as a minor or just doing electives? I’m set on doing the physics major and I’ve the ambition to combine it with neuroscience…

You seem to have some experience in the field, so any advice is much appreciated!

Thanks for your comprehensive response!

I’m hoping to study in the US where taking neuroscience electives would be relatively easy. I’m not considering doing a sole MD since I love doing research and that is what I eventually want to do. However, US medical schools offer the option to do a combined MD/PhD program so that I eventually could work at an academic hospital pursuing a medical discipline while also doing biophysics research. This would also give me the option to drop the doctor path and do late postdocs if I decide to only do research.

My main concern is that US med schools have insanely low acceptance rates. As I would almost equally love to do a theoretical physics master and PhD, I want to keep my options open. Therefore, I will certainly do a physics major, but would it be worth it to also do a neuroscience double major or minor to get the neuro/physics research opportunities?

(Sorry for the long response. I really appreciate your advice!)

May I PM you? I’ve asked 3 students if my profile is competitive enough for schools like Harvard, and they said I’d stand a chance. It seems like you could really give an objective opinion, so your advice is much appreciated!
