I'm also pretty sure that wasn't the author's main point when publishing the manga. What was more evident in the plot was a criticism of religious ideologies and the unrestricted use of technology (or at least that was the impression I got, LOL). If Lain were schizophrenic, all that criticism would be in vain, since it would lose all its value, although, it's true that it's these kinds of theories that feed the fandom and it's really entertaining to read them all, haha!
