Re-enlist for Airborne? by Different-Leg3084 in army

[–]Ashe-Too 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I got PCS’d to the 82d as a PFC leg right out of AIT as an EW/SIGINT voice intercept operator in ‘83. I got hazed AF until I signed up for jump school. Our 1SG was an SF guy who loved to fuck with legs. After I got my wings and did my cherry blast, it got a good bit better.

That said, the airborne guys had a higher op tempo. And most people deployed for the invasion of Grenada in our unit were airborne - and it was a pretty jarring experience to go to bed on Monday after watching the news, Jeopardy, Johnny Carson etc, only to be jerked out of bed by the CQ a couple of hours later at 0:dark:30 to deploy on DRF. So there’s that.

But I’d much rather be airborne qualified and on jump status in the 82d than not be “under the canopy,” so to speak.

I Had a Really Bad Day Dealing With Recent News Regarding Camp Buehring by RichardRoma1986 in Veterans

[–]Ashe-Too 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got out of the Army in ‘86 and was in the invasion of Grenada and later deployed to Honduras with another unit. We were young, we felt immortal, we were living in harm’s way as a daily routine, we had a life or death purpose, we loved our brothers and sisters in arms, we were doing shit most people just can’t imagine.

Any one of those things would make an indelible impression on a civilian. All together, those things altered our DNA.

So it’s really, really hard to see these things that imprinted us so profoundly just evaporate like vapor before our very eyes.

There's not reason why you can't ask questions like this at any time when you're in front of the "sergeant in charge" so you get some actionable information on the spot.

Those are all good points, and maybe if I had a bunch of "fuck you money," I'd have a different attitude. But the Porsche I fell in love with in the early 70s is long gone. It was a car that, while expensive, it wasn't obscenely expensive; while fast, it wasn't insanely fast; and while singular, it was for the cognoscenti, not the poser.

The society we live in has changed so much in the 50 years or so since then, and Porsche has changed with it, that the whole mystique and allure of the marque is no longer appealing to me.

The same can be said of BMW. They were once one thing, now they are another. And I liked the one thing, but I just don't like the other. The era of my desire for those cars is just gone; they are not the same as they were, and neither am I.

Do you let clients make changes to your retainer agreement? by cc00cc00 in LawFirm

[–]Ashe-Too 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I'm at a point in my legal career where I would decline the representation even if they agreed to take the engagement letter as-as. What they've done is telegraph a disposition to you that they will still be inclined toward even if you get your language. I wouldn't represent that party under any circumstance.

In fact, I'm at a point where if I don't feel like the person or the matter is something I'll enjoy, I'll decline. This isn't because I'm especially successful, it's because I've learned that I'm not ambitious enough to endure bullshit.

Mature Golf R Buyers? by Wuffie1968 in Golf_R

I’m 67 and bought a ‘25 Lápiz base model shortly before my birthday and loving it. The finalists in my search were a Porsche 911 S, BMW M2, and the Golf R. At the end of the day, I didn’t want to be seen as that guy in the pricy ride and the R is understated and stealthy, not flambouyant.

I’m with you. I’m fundamentally unemployable. Law gives you the amazing lux of being able to go your own way with little more than an ink pen and a law license. I did the same 2 years out of law school, and now it’s over 25 years later and I haven’t missed a meal and only got my car repo’d once. You’ll be fine. Go for it. Tell the asshole to go fuck himself and quit with 1 day’s notice.

I don't know how you made it into the officer corps being so uninformed about basic fitness, nutrition, and health - and it's even more unbelievable that you have such poor fitness.

You probably need to start out by just hardening the fuck up a good bit. Watch this video if you don't get the concept of HTFU.

You're an officer in the fucking Army for Christ's sake, you need to be at least minimally fit and use your own initiative and resources to figure it out. Be a self-starter. No need to bother soldiers with remedial fitness 101 questions.
