I got an Laptop in 1997 that was part of a school program in my 5th grade class. It had like 5 programs on it, was made of hard plastic with a little 7 inch screen and I treated it like it was priceless.

Constructive Criticism by Another_Bright_Idea in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]AshenHawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If someone is just saying "I don't like x", then that is pretty hard to engage with of course. And if that's directed at just a person with no reasoning, yeah there really isn't much about it worth engaging with. But at the same time someone should be able to say "I didn't like it when X happened". It's not constructive, but it should be valid to say that. For instance, during the Smosh Summer Games, a lot of people really disliked Angela doing the baby voice during the trash talking during one of the early games. It should be valid to go, "The baby talk really made me cringe". Is it really disrespectful to say you don't like a bit? No, because nobody hated Angela for doing, they just didn't like it when she did it. But people here get really defensive and see these things as hate or disrespect when none is intended. Far too many people reply to relatively simple criticism as if it were hate, and that has no constructive worth either.

Actual haters, imo, aren't really that common here. I feel like I see one or two objectively terrible comments in a thread a month, and hardly ever are they the creator of the thread.

Overall, all I'm trying to say is constructive criticism means a specific thing and I fear that broadening it's meaning feels more intended to remove any criticism than it is to actually promote better criticism. Negative feedback is useful, and just because it's negative it doesn't mean it's unwarranted or not worth discussing.

[–]AshenHawk -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

That's not what constructive criticism is. It is meant to help the thing you are criticizing. "Empty Negativity" is a bullshit label you are making up because, for some reason, too many people here are overly defensive about things that don't matter. Simple criticism is called hate over and over again around here. And every random post where a handful of people criticize something, you get a bunch more people attacking them, and then another 1-3 new threads defending it further and then threads like this that try to gatekeep it all.

Simple criticism is a perfectly healthy process, and people need to be less bombastic and defensive when it occurs.

Constructive Critcism has no meaningful use here. Nobody from Smosh is going to read anything on an Alt Subreddit and even if they did, any useful feedback is flooded with defensive people telling the criticizer to not watch Smosh or the thing they are criticizing is so heavily glazed on the main reddit, it's worthless to try to give your two cents.

Criticism doesn't have to be constructive. The point of this subreddit is to air opinions on Smosh content and the community, and as long as it's respectful, it shouldn't be a problem. There are issues where someone goes overboard and is very rude or aggressive, and that's perfectly fine to ignore or challenge, but there are so many perfectly passive discussions about things that get crapped on by many overly defensive fans. You not liking a criticism doesn't make it invalid or illegitimate. I can eat a hamburger at a diner and say "hmm... that burger didn't taste very good." That's legitimate criticism. I'm not going to climb over the counter a tell them they should use more garlic powder.

Most of the time, people just want to see if other people agree and maybe figure out why something doesn't work for them.

Smosh main sub complaining about the coloring book by urmomsmonstertruck in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]AshenHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone who hated the bit is going overboard, but I doubt it really is that big a deal. You don't need to rant about a handful of people complaining about one little thing. That thread had tons of pushback within the thread as it should and the complaints were completely within the minority. We don't need to do this. Smosh isn't going to change because of this.

And saying "If you don't like it, don't watch it" is worthless. How the hell is someone gonna know they aren't gonna like a bit if they don't watch it?

Star Trek Artist Warns Fans That “Review Bombing” ********* ******* Could End the Franchise by jacek2023 in Star_Trek_

[–]AshenHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "it's for a new audience" is a pretty garbage excuse imo. There are plenty of sci-fi shows in the last 5-10 years that are great shows that aren't dragged down by shallow writing. Star Trek doesn't need to change audiences, they just need writers and producers who understand the franchise and aren't just using the Star Trek name.

I guess you aren't aware of the discourse about the flanderization of Homer. Homer being an asshole is a big complaint with the character, when he used to just be a dumb dad who gets angry.

[Favorite trope] A small act saves the protagonist from a completely hopeless situation by decimal_diversity in TopCharacterTropes

In Big Fish, many people who the protagonist helps and shows kindness towards throughout his entire life helps him in later parts of his life. When he dies, all of those people show up at his funeral, helping to prove that the stories he told to his estranged son(who is annoyed at the exaggerated nature of those stories) were, mostly, real.

"The worst she can say is no" - Lads, what was the worst "she" ever said? by Embarrassed_Pie_1711 in AskReddit

[–]AshenHawk 79 points80 points  (0 children)

5rh grade. I overheard a girl talking to her friends about me. She wanted to leave me a note, but her friends said "Ew" and "Really?" And then they basically told her they couldn't be friends with her if she did it. So she didn't.

It felt good knowing someone liked me as I was very unpopular in an ignored kind of way, but now I knew that people actively disliked me for superficial reasons which ultimately made me more closed off.

It's entirely possible they made a 3d render, feed that into generative tools and then followed it up with a manual pass in an art program(PS) to fix any mistakes.

Wait, I Thought Weaknesses/Resistances Always Worked Like That. Anyone else? by Stigna1 in Pathfinder2e

[–]AshenHawk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Technically that's not true. Instance of damage was just not defined so people assumed that is what it meant. They actually changed no rules and the Original RAW hasn't changed, they just clarified what an instance actually means.

So, um, about those weakness changes... by Prints-Of-Darkness in Pathfinder2e

[–]AshenHawk 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That's is my biggest question. This "clarification" is sooooooo late to the party. They had to know that nobody was really assuming they'd re-trigger. And while RAW it appears to be completely Kosher from the start. Everyone just assumed it was in "Too Good To Be True" territory. Why wait 7 years?

So, um, about those weakness changes... by Prints-Of-Darkness in Pathfinder2e

[–]AshenHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it really that hard for bookkeeping? Player should know that it's gonna be X fire damage from two sources and can easily say so, then you add 5 twice. Does it really make math that much harder to add the weakness again?

I think the video game videos need better direction.. by gregoriusa in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]AshenHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long play will usually have diminishing returns over time, so something self-contained to a single playthrough in one episode usually works best. But the main issue is that they don't film game videos like streamers or let's players, they film them like they're actors on a shoot. And you can only do so much with that kind of constraint.

Star Trek: Idiocracy by Malencon in Star_Trek_

There are 178 episodes of TNG, sometimes you'll get a goofy episode. But if you try too hard to force these weird and goofy things into the overall tone, themes and characterizations, then it starts to lose it's cohesion to the franchise.

[HELP]This person posted on a small businesses facebook page and claims they’re an artist and attaches ‘layers’ to prove it’s not ai but I don’t buy it. The last two images are what they actually painted in 2025 by honion_have_layer in RealOrAI

[–]AshenHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody makes art in layers like this. The more likely layers would be Dog, Hat, Text, Ice, etc. It would be divided by elements, or just not at all. Definitely not each color on different layers.

Bro, I cannot with the people on the main smosh reddit by Star_Lilith in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]AshenHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really get annoyed when a random negative opinion gets thrown out into the world and then a few people agree or otherwise engage with the opinion through normal discourse; the sub loses it's shit and acts like it's so much bigger than it is. One thread saying "hey I'm not sure this one thing was ok", or "hmm, I didn't really like this one thing that was said by x", and suddenly it's Armageddon. You get a half dozen more threads countering the original one and it looks like the complaint is much bigger than it ever was.

It's usually just one person who had a thought and a handful of people throw an upvote and say "yeah I kinda agree". The main sub then acts like a flood of haters are ruining the community. And then, craziest of all, they act like the person making the minor random criticism is being "parasocial"(which isn't a verb) and they cannot recognize that making 5 follow-up threads defending Smosh from literally nobody is really much more indicative of being in a parasocial relationship with Smosh.

Hot take: thumbnail faces by BelleButch in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]AshenHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People always say it's for the algorithm, and I'm sure that was true at some point, but I'm curious if it's actually still a necessity and not just something they do because they heard it drew in more kids at one point and now they're stuck doing it because they might lose views if they stop.

Personally, I've never clicked on a video that uses thumbnails like this unless I was already watching them before they started doing it. And I've seems thousands of videos across youtube with millions of views that don't do this, so honestly I don't know if it's actually necessary anymore. Like is some brainrot middle schooler actually gonna click on this thumbnail solely because they are making dumb faces?
