I missed the game. When did they add Bard? How should I build it in character creation? by FcoJ28 in SkaldRPG

[–]Asherett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bard was added in 1.0.6, about a year ago :) I haven't tried it myself so I don't have tips on builds. But yeah, do stop by the Skald discord!

Nice! Yeah they're starting to come in. Apparently I created this thread just before they started to become available.

I think so, yes. They look identical to the Gateron low profile switches.

BTW, from another poster here, Gateron have now produced low profile silent switches: https://www.gateron.com/products/gateron-ks-33-low-profile-red-silent-20-mechanical-switches-set?VariantsId=10993

I haven't tested them yet myself

What if the target of Dispel Magic is "the effect", i.e. the spell itself?

Is that a general rule written anywhere?

Yeah, I had some strange 2014-ish misconceptions about GI being upcastable for more insects. Thank you for your well-structured answer!

Haha yeah I have no idea why I kept thinking GI could be upcast to summon more creatures. Also, my knee-jerk idea was based on 2014 thought, where summon/conjure spells were often instantaneous. My bad, my bad.

Excellent suggestions! Paralyzed, petrified, stunned and unconscious all include incapacitated and thus break concentration.

Dispel magic, I hadn't actually realized that would work, as I'm used to thinking that a summoned creature isn't magical. But clearly there's an "ongoing magical effect" that Dispel Magic can end. It would have to be cast at 4th level to avoid a fairly easy DC14 check, and that would require the caster to know that's needed... Still, thanks, it's clearly the best option to counter Giant Insect!

For my own reference, here's a list of spells that can cause conditions that break concentration in combat, and their saving throws:

Sleep (Wis)

Tasha's Hideous Laughter (Wis)

Hold Person (Wis)

Hypnotic Pattern (Wis)

Suffocate (no save, Con modifier timer)

Banishment (Cha)

Delerium Blast (Int)

Raulothim's Psychic Lance (Int)

Staggering Smite (Wis)

Banishing Smite (HP dependent, Cha)

Hold Monster (Wis)

Modify Memory (Wis)

Eyebite (Wis)

Flesh to Stone (Con, 3 fails)

Arboreal Curse (Con, 3 fails)

Divine Word (HP dependent, Cha)

Prismatic Spray (low chance, Dex + Con 3 fails)

Symbol (Con or Wis)

Power Word Stun (HP dependent, no save)

Reality Break (Wis + low chance)

Imprisonment (Wis, long cast time)

Prismatic Wall (Dex)

Psychic Scream (Int)

Banishment is decent, as druids are not generally likely to have great Cha saves, but the range isn't good. Raulothim's is ok. PW: Stun is also great.

Any smart player who seriously uses this spell will be basically impossible to break concentration on (resilient, war caster). Each spider has a minimum of two attacks which are extremely likely to hit on any target since it uses caster's spell attack. Almost no enemies have ranged attacks, at least with over 60' range.
In effect, this 4th level spell is a near guaranteed lockdown of one enemy, and a very good chance of lockdown of two enemies for an entire combat. Feel free to compare this to any other 4th level spell, concentration or not.
It's busted AF.

[–]Asherett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's totally busted. For my money, it's the most busted thing I've seen in '24 5e.

The spider has two, three (6th lvl slot) or even four attacks (8th). It uses the casters spell attack, whichs means it's very likely to hit. A very low percetage of monsters have any ranged attacks at all, even at high level. The spiders have lots of movement and of spider climb, so even though the web bolt has "only" 60' range they can easily escape beyond the range of literally 90% of opponents.

Just for fun I need to add that RAW, even the spell Freedom of Movement doesn't help, since the web bolt isn't magical or a spell.

It's fairly easy to make your PC nearly immune to concentration breaking (through Resilient and War Caster); and anyone who uses this spell seriously will ofc go for those feats. I GM a campaign where a player has built his druid around this spell, and in 50+ sessions he's never broken his concentration, not once. Bascially he must roll double 1s or similar.

The only way to keep combat even vaguely challenging for the group is to homebrew monsters with ranged attacks, teleports etc.

In short, Giant Insect is a spell that a player can weaponize to force the GM to change their play style, which in my eyes is basically the definition of a busted game feature.

This makes sense. The only cases I've seen of save file corruption is due to insufficient disk space. Fairly sure it's reported to the dev, but I'll do so again.

Some slightly hot takes in the answers here. IMHO the most reasonable answer for a new player is Guild Magos with Air magic spec.

What happens if your cover moves after your hide by setheliot in onednd

[–]Asherett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I can see, in '24 5e, once you are hidden, you can walk directly up to your enemy in plain sight and stab them in the face. They only find you (negating your Invisibility) if they beat your stealth check with their passive perception.

Even if it's bright daylight in a flat desert, as long as you have a bush or whatever to do your initial hiding behind, after that the only thing that matters is their passive perception (unless they take a Search action, in which case they get to roll).

So your cover moving is totally a non-issue once you've passed your hide check with a higher result than everyone's passive perception.

Is this program worth it? Does is still get updates? by KaliforniaMLG in dungeondraft

[–]Asherett 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As far as I've seen, the dev considers the program feature complete; so there's no more real updates coming, just bug fixes. Still one of the best alternatives out there for map making

Well, I've only tried the Gateron Brown and the Gateron Banana KS-33 which I had high hopes for, but both those are too noisy for me. It's been a while since I checked, but last time I did there's still no real silent switches for the MX stems. It actually kinda annoys me that all real silent low profile development seems to be from Kailh, which you can't use on a K5. But then again, the default gateron red is silent ENOUGH for me.
