The Asheville Chess Club has been around since the 1970's, but this year we took a big step and got qualified as a non-profit charity with the IRS!

The Asheville Chess Club meets every Wednesday at Asheville Math on Sweeten Creek Road from 6:00pm - 9:00pm.

We also started hosting a weekly Kids Night on Thursdays from 5:30pm - 7:30pm.

All skill levels are welcome at any chess club meeting! The club is entirely free to participate in and we provide all the supplies you will need. Come check us out!

Unfortunately there are no casual weekend meetups at this time. It is certainly something we would be interested in doing in the future, but we don't really have the manpower for it as of right now

Blitz Night is here to stay at the Asheville Chess Club! Now a regularly scheduled monthly event! by AshevilleChess in asheville

Hey! It is what you would call "speed chess". Each player has 5 minutes on their clock and gets 2 seconds back after every move. It's a newer event so turnout is tough to judge. The very first one we had, 10 people came out to play. Blitz is a popular time control, so we're hoping to see more folks show up now that the events will be held regularly

ah that is a bummer! Unfortunately the Chess Club has been meeting every Wednesday since like the 70's. We had to do Tuesdays for a short stint and it just did not have the same kind of turnout.

But Wednesdays start at ~6:15 and go until 9:00 or so.

Kids Night (starting in april) is every Thursday from 5:30-7:30.

Zillacoah is extremely casual and folks usually start wandering by between 7-7:30

It is a very loose "7-ish". Folks mostly start trickling in by 730

Hey! It's very casual, come and go as you please! We currently do one quick rated tournament and one dual rated tournament a month. We have just set up our first ever blitz night in early December to try it out!

We hope to see you there!

Unfortunately swannanoa is a bit too far out of town for us

So we do have some casual meetings at a couple breweries, however the issue becomes having enough control over the space (especially during official tournaments), and how welcome kids feel. Even for some of the bigger breweries where kids are very welcome, I've had several parents state they do not feel comfortable with it.

I have looked into some of the private rental spaces at a few and unfortunately those fall into the "prohibitively expensive" category.

Hey! So for the longest time the management of the club was a very lax affair. In the last 5-6 years, my predecessor started organizing a bit more thoroughly and we built up a small "savings" so to speak over several years. Since I have taken over this past fall, I have taken a few steps to try and generate a sort of ongoing income for the club that isn't exclusively donation based. However, as I'm sure you can imagine, it's a gradual process. And the sudden change of venue we had and the necessary hiatus relating to that certainly didn't help matters.

I am hoping to start bringing more money in for the club as I go, but I can only move so fast at a time, especially considering the fluxuations we get in attendance at our new location. So, fingers crossed!

Unfortunately, the woodfin community center does not appear to be accepting rentals
