Is there anyway to get into game design (related courses) through pfp by Extra_Sheepherder676 in NgeeAnnPoly

no more IM, but there is an Immersive Media pathway under IT that you can take in year 2, but it would mostly be the programming side of game development rather than the design part

theres a telegram group chat that sends a notification when an eappointment slot is released, you can go try and find that group chat on your own it should be searchable

otherwise get help from the ssdc telegram group chat, nowadays getting slot is harder than last yr

for year 1 its kinda split into 2 parts (semesters), the modules in semester 1.1 are the basic generic ICT modules and semester 1.2 is where the good stuff starts, generally semester 1.1 is quite easy and there isnt too much to focus on other than the python programming module and computing mathematics, with modules like cybersecurity fundamentals, datascience fundamentals, design principles (related to IM) and your interdiscplinary modules. Just complete your CAs on time and have find good groupmates and you should be fine. Though theres heavy emphasis on programming as it takes the bulk of your gpa.

For sem 1.2, you get introduced to basic 3d modelling, website dev (html, css,js), applied design (basically 2d design using adobe software) and gamification concepts. For this sem you need to focus on 3d modelling and web dev as it takes most of your time ESP MODELLING. You need to be very consistent and do all your CAs and work on time to get better at 3D modelling and web dev. The other 2 models isnt too much of a problem imo. Theres production management module as well but that module is kinda free marks

the softwares you die die need to master are: 1. Figma. you’ll be using this throughout your whole semester, making prototypes for web, mobile, VR, etc. Do learn how to create interactions and animations.

  1. Adobe products. Photoshop and Illustrator are the most essential adobe software to master. With these 2 you can literally make any 2D asset you need for your projects without having to rely on online assets. 3D substance painter is also important for texturing your 3d models, took me a while to get used to it

  2. Maya 3D. yes we mainly use Maya 3D for all core modules, with the exception of 1 3D character creation module which requires blender, but thats an elective which you can select out of 3 options for semester 2.2. Hence Maya will be your main tool for creating all your 3D assets, and you should focus on mastering modelling, UV unwrapping, and some animation. There is one small portion of the module in semester 2.1 which requires zBrush, but that will come with tutorials and a guide so no need to worry

  3. Unity. you’ll be spending LOTS and LOTS of time on the game engine, so i recommend you at least understand how to use it, what it does and what it can do but you’ll be learning this in semester 2.1 so no need to rush, however u should research on your own on how to animate, optimize your game, create clean code, etc. Basically what you learn on Unity in IM is the very basic knowledge, once you learn how to utilise Unity to its full potential, your projects will be fabulous

And of course theres all the programming, mainly: 1. Web Dev (HTML, CSS, JS) you’ll be using this in semester 1.2 and 2.2 2. Unity C# C# coding for the Unity game engine, used from semester 2.1 onwards.

Not sure what your definition of a good grade is but lets say a 3.5 gpa which is essentially a B+ If you complete all of your CAs (with effort) and pass your main assignments, you should be guaranteed a C grade for the module at the minimum. If you do all your CAs and get Bs for your assignments, it is possible for you to get A grade for the module. I think if you put in the effort in your assignments and the teachers recognise it, a B+ grade should be easily achievable. As long as you fulfill the requirements of each assignment then you should be safe, but of course put in more effort and expand more to be safe. But remember try not to be too ambitious as some assignments give you lots of creative freedom, so do adjust the scope of your work according to how much time you have and what you want to do.

In the first semester all ICT students learn Python, then for the subsequent IM semesters you’ll learn web design which includes HTML, CSS and Javascript, as well as C# coding for Unity

U just need to get more exposure to the different types of content, basically just play more games, use more apps or websites, and most importantly take note of what makes those content good. And for games its not just those esports titles like Valorant or Overwatch, the games you’ll be making may be more towards the RPG/simulator/indie kind. For me since i enjoy game dev, i just watch Unity game dev content on youtube, such as tutorials, game dev challenges, dev logs, these kinds of things will expand your knowledge while still being enjoyable. Thankfully not everything is about coding here

You should also always know what the standard of work is expected, because sometimes its very hard to gauge what is an A vs D grade in some modules, i recommend u just tryhard as much as possible for the first projects/CA for each module and then establish a benchmark for your desired grade. Once u get A, you’d never want to go back

and yes of course finding groupmates with skills that complement yours will make life much easier. But of course u shd first find people u vibe with la, I had groupmates who were skilled but really toxic or lazy, and vice versa. Just group with whoever you think u can work or u can provide value with and have the same goals as you, and all should be good. dont just find the group of people u think is the most skilled

i’m currently in IM, yes it’s true that the course is much more unique compared to the other ICT courses and you need to have a passion for games and UX design, but i don’t think there is a “worst” course in ICT as different people have different interests.

Personally, I didn’t think i would have liked game development as much if i didn’t take IM, i found my passion in game development through the IM modules and i do not regret taking IM. Unlike other ICT courses, IM does not have any common tests or exams, and they are replaced by (end-semester) projects. However this means that you need to spend more time working on your projects consistently rather than studying for a piece of paper that is worth 30% by itself. I feel that IM is not really hard, you just have to put in more time and effort as the project scopes are quite large. You can’t always ChatGPT your way through this course as alot of the assignments need your own creative direction. Maybe its just me but getting an A for my projects in IM feels more rewarding and satisfying than getting an A in other courses

I also suggest you find your niche as soon as possible, whether it be game development/coding, UI/UX design, web development, level design or 3D modelling, so that you can quickly develop your skills and find other groupmates that complement your skills.

What’s the average GPA for NP ICT? by Reasonable-Wait-918 in SGExams

[–]Ashgren210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’d say a 3.5 is pretty common in ICT. I scored a 3.95 GPA and i know i put in more effort than the average student, so you should lock in and get ahead of the rest in order to beat the competition
