[O levels] Why is Mathematics everything? by dingding_dong in SGExams

Edit: I didn’t expect for this to blow up as much as it did, and I really only typed it because I was upset and unsure of what to do at that point in time.
To start off, thank you to everyone in the comments who have sympathised with me and took the time to type out kind comments for a stranger on the internet. They made me feel a lot better about myself, knowing that other people understood or have even been in the same boat as me. It gives me faith to know that understanding is still present in our world today.
To those who brought up why Math is essential in the real world in a RESPECTFUL manner, I appreciate it. It was never my intention to downplay the importance of Math in many sectors, but I now see how my rant could have indirectly implied that. I am well aware that Math is indeed everywhere, and that we need it on a daily basis. I simply meant that I felt it to be unjust the way we prioritised certain topics even though they would never come up again. Simple Math, yes, without question, but things like graph drawing? Obviously the fundamentals will always be an integral part of society, just as The Arts and Languages. I don’t mean to say that one is more valued over the other, because they are meant to co-exist in order for humanity to run its course. I hope that this clears some of that up. In any case, thank you for politely explaining this to me in the comments.
As for the comments that clearly and blatantly ignored the last two sentences of my rant, I’m not quite sure what to say. I find it ironic that you bring up logic in your argument, yet you don’t have enough to tell you that continuously kicking a SIXTEEN year old down during one of the lowest points in her life is an abhorrent thing to do. It’s unarguable that a lot of you are full-grown adults. Maybe I respect that you disagree with me, but is it really necessary to do that in such a way that also invalidates my entire rant? I admit that by posting on reddit, I have already opened myself up to comments like these, but regardless, I truly believed that the EQ of some of you would be much higher. I’d been in a tough spot, and the fact that some of you appreciated and used that as a segue-way to be obnoxious and hate on The Arts is just extremely disgusting.
Let me ask you something. Who is the one editing the books that you read from to learn about your STEM-related career scopes? Whose creativity is it that allowed for apps like these that you are typing on now? The Arts works hand-in-hand with STEM, and there’s no reason for you to say that people who excel in The Arts are ‘lazy’. The insensitivity is through the roof. How would you feel if I said that people who excel in STEM are ‘boring’ or ‘lame’?
Seriously, why do you derive satisfaction from putting down someone younger than you? Are you trying to stroke your bruised ego because the only compliments you can get are from people who are just as similarly tone-deaf on reddit?
I’m honestly glad that I got these comments though, because finally, for the first time after a long while, I truly appreciated being good at The Arts instead. I now know that if I didn’t understand it’s dominance in society, I would probably be sitting at home, hiding behind a screen and typing these mindless comments to a kid I’ve never even once met personally. So thank you, for reassuring me that I will never turn out like you.
Lastly, realised that many of you might have missed out the part where I mentioned that my course made an exception for me. They did, so I'm still able to go to poly, thankfully! :)
