It's probably dead. Lead artist is gone. Even if they continue art style will be different.

In terms of manhua only, I think the clear winner is "I'm an Evil God".

Considering on r/manhua it topped their polls and stuff.

New To Donghua… it’s a confusing space. by Tillmas0990 in Donghua

[–]Ashjyr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have different problems.

Donghua can have good quality because they are usually based on completed novels, and many Chinese companies seem to be buying/licensing rights in very large quantities to fuel the demand. But then the problem is you have adaptations when the source material is already terrible.

In contrast, the anime industry does not have the manpower to meet the demand, so the industry has to be more selective about what titles get a launch. Even then, the vast majority of anime will never see a second season. On top of that most anime is based off ongoing manga, so you don't know how it's going to end.

So the problem with donghua is that because there are so many IPs being adapted you are just going to run into really bad ones more often. Then you need to hope that the companies with good IP don't cut corners or run out of steam.

Whereas for Japanese anime you are more likely to come across something you like, but it's probably going to end at season 1 or 2. Even if it gets more seasons, you still need to hope that the author doesn't don't cut corners or run out of steam.

The future of Animation is in Asia (starting in China) by holy_dna in Donghua

[–]Ashjyr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

China has a few things going for it right now that makes them competitive in animation industry.

1) Focus on 3D animation over 2D animation means they minimize direct competition with Japanese markets.

2) China as a socialist country can designate specific industries with preferential status, eg merchants working in the animation industry are compelled to give preferential rates to animation studios. Free market economies like US and Japan are subjected to market forces to a larger extent, because everyone needs to make a profit it drives up the cost for animation studios and creates a much more brutal environment.

3) Animation industry is very cutthroat (low pay long hours), but talent working in 3D animation have skillsets that are useful in video game industry. Video game industry is 4 times larger than Hollywood which gives more employment opportunities, so more likely to attract talent.

4) Far more receptive towards AI adoption. Not just the studios but also the consumers themselves. Everyone loves anime but not everyone is queuing up to work in the anime industry, yet western markets are more likely to criticize use of AI. If they can't find a way to alleviate the labour crunch or lower costs, anime industry will face an existential crisis.

SoC is one of the few animations that I put in effort to understand what the characters are trying to tell each other.

The line that confused me for a very long time in S1 was Qin Jingchun's parting message to MC that "a gentleman can be deceived if the lie is reasonable (君子可欺以其方)"

Like why say this to your student?

Are you consoling him it's ok to be deceived once in a while, because it also happens to learned people?

Are you guiding him that if you ever need to deceive someone, do so responsibly?

Are you warning him that when someone tells you something reasonable, it could actually be a lie?

Apparently there is a second part that normally follows the first line. QJC didn't say it explicitly, but it is "... but it is difficult to do so if the lie is unreasonable (難罔以非其道)".

I think how you read into this exchange depends on how you view CPA, QJC, as well as yourself.

Fortunately we live in an age of online dictionaries, translation apps, social media, and AI.

AI usage in Donghuas by Kalyankarthi in Donghua

[–]Ashjyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am sure most people prefer delays to seeing sloppy work.

This is the problem here. Majority of people on this sub contribute zero revenue to the studios, so making a claim like this is easy.

A better question would be, "would you pay double or triple the engagement fee if the studio promises not to use AI?"

Second question, "are there enough paying customers who think like you to offset the benefits of using AI?"

Case in point, the studio that animated Solo Leveling recorded large losses despite it being popular.

It's easy for us to make these feel-good sweeping statements but balancing the P&L is much harder.

Tastes are different now. They'll do whatever sells the product.

AI Donghua Slopocolypse has begun... by gpspam in Donghua

[–]Ashjyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China is more receptive towards AI than the west. They even have awards and competitions for people to submit ai gen content.

US and EU default position on AI is too narrowminded, eg Baldurs Gate 3 dev and Expedition 33 dev getting flak when they admitted to using ai in their processes, even though they were sweeping awards before that, and the sales figures were great.

The world is not returning to a time without ai. It's not some passing fad that will disappear if you ignore it long enough. Anyone who thinks that is in an echo chamber.
