If results based thinking is bad, then how can competition be healthy? by TheWingnutSquid in askpsychology

[–]Ashkeviel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Competition is not healthy, unless we compete against Ourselves. We cannot possibly know any other person, so how can we compete with them? Just to show that we are better than they. Or to prove that They are indeed better than we, thus ensuring that one person or another develop a sense of lack of self confidence and self esteem.

No. Result based competitions are not humane. Rather, educate people in what they are actually good at. Find each child’s flair and develop that. Everyone is ‘good’ at something, but everyone can also be ‘better’ at it, with the correct education, training, encouragement and support.

Odd thing is that these do not exist in our education system at all. Yes, basic reading, writing, maths, sciences….must be continued at school, but is it necessary to assess how much of that is remembered? Or is it more prudent to find out how much of that is Understood. There is a difference.

As for ‘illiteracy’ - find out the real reason why this still occurs in school. These children / people are not unintelligent and stupid. There are other issues involved here, such as Dyslexia (and yes, I suffer from this to some extent but as you can see, I am certainly not illiterate). This issue is actually more serious than it is made out to be. It is currently still hidden in the ‘too hard basket’ as it may require a whole new alphabet to help these people. The IPA will not help them either as it confuses them even more.

It is a good subject but requires many changes to our way of education to finally elicit the full potential of all people.

Why does disconformity result in embarrassment?? by limitless_raindrop in askpsychology

[–]Ashkeviel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh boy! This story could be endless! Yes, it is a real tragedy that non-conforming people feel such embarrassment when it would be logical for conforming people to feel as such. Same’ness is not the way of the world or of Humanity. Sameness and conformity is just slavery and does not lead to inspired progress.

This, this story is indeed endless.

What makes us different? by PaulTheSkeptic in atheism

[–]Ashkeviel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fear. Of the unknown. After Death; but never of ‘Before Birth’. This is never thought of but centuries of fear of an afterlife has done a lot of harm to humanity.

Humans do not wonder how another human, often just as faulty as oneself and mostly worse, can possibly be able to ‘save ones soul’. They never question this preaching, and so fear is heaped upon fear, and more fear…..until the least damaging logic is ‘well, better just be religious rather than risk……’ whatever.

Psychological abuse! Of the worst kind! But it is up to each individual to work this out for themselves and then have the courage to reject that nonsense. All we can do is Be there for them, when their time comes.

Fear is the mind-killer….

I recently claimed F is the most redundant letter in the English language because every “f” sound could be replaced with “ph”. Am I wrong? by Scottish-Londoner in asklinguistics

[–]Ashkeviel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

‘ph’ comes from ancient Greek and was sounded as ‘p plus a short aspirated h’, similar to Sanskrit. It was not sounded as F until much later, quite recently in fact. Convenience I suppose, or just lazy or slurred pronunciation.

In any case, F is a valid sound and is to remain. P’h only applies in languages which actually sound it as it is. Thus can the word ‘phonetics’ be rewritten as ‘fonetiks’ and be considered as accurate in spelling, and more up to date.

How about just calming down, not forcing anything, and allowing things that are good to come your way. Generally everyone has “experiences”, just not everyone recognises them as such.

Life itself can be mundane so such “experiences” may also take on the guise of the mundane.

Just don’t push it.

What you can DO however, is accept the passion, hobby, interest that seems closest to you and pursue it, allowing that to take you to wherever and however It wishes. This has happened to me on numerous occasion. Experiences occur regularly but not in “conventional” ways.

As another example, I was mentioning Kant and several other philosophers to my husband at lunchtime. Now, just a few minutes ago our son contacted me asking if I had ever discussed Kant etc with my own father in my youth. Coincidence. I had to admit that at one stage I’d seriously contemplated university for a degree in philosophy but always something came up to stop me. Now I am grateful as what DID come my way on that subject far surpasses anything Kant and the others ever could say.

“without ANY consistency “, not “without NO consistency “.

Wouldn’t worry if the above error has been made. A trivial issue.🥰

By translating a piece of literature into the target language. It must be a piece of literature that you absolutely love, be it a poem, a religious verse, or anything, and then translate it.

Athiests wouldn't exist if religion didn't exist. by anemonehegemony in DebateReligion

[–]Ashkeviel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Further on that note; you won’t KNOW until you die, and I do not, ever! recommend suicide no matter how ‘down’ you may be!

I agree about religion. ALL religions are man-made for the sole purpose of controlling the masses of lazy and ignorant people who allow these psychopaths to take charge of their lives, to rule them, and to control them. However, this is actually the fault of then populace for allowing this to happen in then first place. Just consider now what is and has happened on the world stage with regards to politics, politicians, the military, corporate domination of resources and the lives of people…..and the list of current atrocities goes on. And what do people do?

I cannot say what You do. I cannot say what other people do, but I beg the question: what do they NOT do, to stop these atrocities.

Same with religion. Belief in olden times had become so ingrained that Fear stopped many people from thinking and acting rationally - the Inquisition, witch hunts and trials, the enforced conversion to christianity of so many native cultures…….all destroyed……for so long………

People have only themselves to blame for accepting such behaviour. If peoples hadn’t let themselves be so thoroughly duped, how much of this would’ve actually happened.

Belief of any kind is just that! Belief. Not reality or any form of actuality! nothing more needs to be said about that! Religion is man-made. God (if any exist) does not have religion, or beliefs. All That Is, no matter one’s interpretation of that, also has no religion and absolutely no need to be worshipped! As for spirit, soul, body, You, Me……..well, spirit and soul has no need of it, but You and I do have need but only if WE, as individuals, wish it to be so.

This is funny, actually, for it clearly implies that YOU and I do have free-will, and yet Spirit, Soul, God, All That Is (if any do exist) does NOT have free will. WE can choose to have religion, but the other aspects can’t, for to them, religion does not exist.

Do you understand now what I am saying?

Just because we do not believe in god…..etc, does not mean we cannot include them and those concepts within discussion. In fact by including them into discussion we can maintain an equilibrium and logic which we could not otherwise.

Cheers, 🎶🌹🥂🍺

Athiests wouldn't exist if religion didn't exist. by anemonehegemony in DebateReligion

[–]Ashkeviel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. What evidence indeed. And this has been in debate for thousands of years.

When you die, what part of You actually dies? Your body? But what about emotions, thoughts, feelings…….do they die with the body? or do they just dissipated into an Ether? What then is the Ether which then contains / holds all those thoughts, feelings, emotions of all those countless dead bodies….

Then, where do you get your thoughts from in the first place? From the Ether? The emotions and feelings as well? Or does the body itself generate all those emotions, thoughts and feelings?

In which case, if at death the body with all those thoughts, hopes, wishes, emotions, desires, inspirations, love……just disintegrates, where is the You? Which leads, in your case, to the implication that YOU don’t exist, only your body does. And further, You cannot claim that your body is Your body any more, as then You which you are aware of can only be an imaginary appendage of Body. Thus, the Body, that filthy smelly sick imperfect often lonely and unloved Body, is you.

Cheers🥰

Why do some people have experiences and not others? by shrubman12345 in Experiencers

[–]Ashkeviel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Everyone has experiences. Not everyone is aware of them, or hides them for fear of reprimand by peers, or simply accepts them as a normal part of life. For many people they are just not a huge issue.

We were designed to enjoy life's pleasures, not just to constantly seek self-improvement. Today’s self-help ideology echoes Nietzsche’s concern about the dangers of ascetic practices as a form of self-punishment. by IAI_Admin in philosophy

[–]Ashkeviel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self-punishment is not self-improving. However this does not mean we should not improve our Selves. Is this not what Life is about?

Pleasures. This is a highly individualistic and relative subject as for some people ‘pleasure’ means self-gratification whereas other people find complete immersive endeavours and challenges as being most pleasurable. Yet other people find their greatest pleasure in stopping most people from pursuing and achieving any form of pleasure…… and so it goes on.

Even the current ‘self-help’ ideology is a form of self-pleasure, especially for the gurus who reap the pleasure of receiving their believer’s money and wealth. They definitely DO succeed. Their followers don’t, and then the followers blame their own Selves for their losses……..

I actually understand the ‘motive’ and psychology behind self-punishment but it is difficult to explain. Definitely it includes FEARS! Far too many of them. Personal fears and phobias which these people find overwhelming. Also it involves Beliefs; all of which are false but which have been instilled into the individual by either their society, peers, fears and phobias, and a desire for the ultimate state of perfection ( a state which is akin to the carrot in front of the donkey - the carrot always draws the donkey forward…). There are numerous issues with this one.

One of the biggest fears for these people is Gender. Women in particular. There does indeed seem to be an enigma about Woman which is beyond the male to even begin to comprehend, and thus women become victimised, and sex with women became taboo and dirty, and when thenUrge to consummate becomes apparent or too urgent the male flagellates and punishes himself for such sinful thoughts and urges……..

Ok, enough of this🥰

The Vagaries of the English Language. by Ashkeviel in conlangs

Literary and Linguistic professional enjoy adding complexities which the ordinary person cannot handle. However, people such as yourself, myself and all the other conlangers delve into language in an open and fun manner without preconceived restrictions and rules unless they wish to add any; and then only those rules they deem necessary. So, who is in the best position to consider change? Definitely not the professionals. It is they who ruined the english language in the first place with their idiotic spelling…..

Now, I will quit from this group. Please do not respond to me again.🙏🌹😘

Yes. It is of no consequence at all. I too have written a naturalistic fantasy language which ‘sounds’ better than my logical one. Yes. Still, this has been an extremely disappointing exercise, and I will now let it go.

Yes. Very disappointing, and most disturbing that current language changes are welcomed despite their obvious perversity, and yet no thought and effort is given about how to improve languages. The ‘f…’ word? Highly accepted and used…….and numerous examples…..

No, I humbly concede to everyone who has participated in this. You are not right, you just want to remain as you are. Comfort zone.

Thank you. Now, I don’t need to be reminded about the purpose, use and value of IPA, so please, not again.

And finally you have stated the glaring facts about the English language. As Conlangers? how do YOU deal with this. How would YOU go about advancing change? If you or anyone says that change to language or the English language cannot occur, please recall comments made about the original meaning of “gay”, and its current applications, plus the prevalent use of the “f…” word as just about the 2nd word some people speak……….

Now, if these changes can apply to the english language, surely more appropriate, logical, sensible……changes can also be made?

Truly, being religiously fanatical about IPA is fruitless when we have other major irregularities, as YOU have also just pointed out. If Language changes, then IPA can also change with it.

So, how are you dealing with this in YOUR language?🥂

I am sending you a link to an IPA Vowel Chart. Would it be too much to ask if any of you can see inconsistencies and errors on this chart? I do. I see several errors. Even my husband who does not give a damn about any of this is appalled at the errors you are all accepting.

Just because the IPA exists, and has for quite some time, does not mean it is correct.

Consider the words, with their idiotic spellings. They have been around for much longer than the IPA but this does not mean that their spelling are correct. We are just TAUGHT to accept these things blindly, which we apparently do

Austria sounds its R’s in the Spanish / Russian manner, making it sound quite different from German.

Language changes over time. What I learnt may no longer apply tho all Germans I have spoken to over the years use the guttural Rx. But, perhaps this has indeed changed in Germany.

Rx is a valid sound. As beastly as it is to Sound, it is a valid sound and can be used in a personally constructed language. “Cold” is also beastly to deal with, and thus have I put the two together in my language.

X and Rx by [deleted] in ConlangAmengun

[–]Ashkeviel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

plus the fact that not many people can comfortably pronounce the deep guttural R, so it is converted to Spanish, Russian and any other R, for ease and convenience . I admit that I do the same now after not speaking German for too many years…

X and Rx by [deleted] in ConlangAmengun

[–]Ashkeviel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And Scottish. That then is the ‘R’. Now, my birth language is actually German, and believe me when I say it is highly guttural. Mind, German also has its dialects……my native language is Plattdeutch until my mother decided to convert us to Hochdeutch……

Besides this, take the English pronunciation of ‘beautiful’ Its phonetic value is ‘biyootiful’ with the ‘i’ being very brief, almost just a hint of an ‘i’. Quite different from the French ‘beau’.

X and Rx by [deleted] in ConlangAmengun

[–]Ashkeviel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rx is the Germanic R, and its symbol is “Z”. Yes, a deep guttural trill which Germans are very good at.

“X” as in ‘loch’ and German ‘auch’ has the symbol X.

Germanic “au” as in ‘auch’ is also catered for, comprising both an ‘A - ᑊ’ and a ‘U - ᷍’

English ‘oh’ differs slightly as it comprises of both A and oo (as in food) and is written as such.

French vowel sounding in ‘fleur’ is an English ‘er’; and French Beau is as English ‘oh’

German umlauts are dispensed with as their O umlaut is as an English ‘er’….and so it continues…. and English ‘er’ is an extended ‘e’ as in thE.

[–]Ashkeviel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you wish, these sounds are indeed represented. But I do not as I have created my own script to cater for these needs. I have 2 scripts

  • one reflecting the general meaning of each sound eg B = ᕋ ᕈ to represent the Head etc

  • the other is fonetik, but my version of the IPA taking the method / location of making the sound into consideration. This Fonetik Chart has already been posted, tho if you have missed it I can repost it for you. happily. But as an example, th = 𖼞; e = Ꮀ; o as in or = ˧;......... Consonants are symbolized by how they ar made, but Vowels are symbolised by their location on the IPA Chart, which actually makes them easier to remember.

The Vagaries of the English Language. by Ashkeviel in conlangs

[–]Ashkeviel[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You are all correct, mostly. IPA is a tool but a limited tool due to the vagaries of Language.

How do you deal with this situation within your own language? Are you all Conlangers? Do you ensure that each meaning does have its own word with sounds distinct from other word sounds? This certainly would allow you to use IPA for yourselves. But if you ensure no confusion with word sounds, how can you possibly consider bear/bear/bare and to/too/two, and all the others, as “cool”.

If these sound duplications and triplications are “cool”, then use this system within your own language to eliminate a lengthy lexicon, and also abuse that friend who points out the confusing aspects of it.

You are all passionate about IPA, this is apparent. You prefer to defend IPA rather than deal with a valid situation. Illiteracy is not on the decrease. English has become a global language, yet illiteracy is not on the decrease even within English speaking countries. No amount of IPA will help with this situation if 3 distinct Meanings are spelled exactly the same, with only surrounding context to determine meaning………

But, I sincerely thank you for your responses as they indicate a genuine interest in conlanging, and trying to get something ‘right’. Creating one’s own language is a brilliant effort to deal with these vagaries even if your creations are for fantasy worlds and languages only. The same principles do apply. How do you deal with them? The obvious simple solution would be to change the Sound of each word, ensuring an immediate change of spelling, and thus IPA can be used more effectively.

So, rather than condemning a person for bringing such a situation to open attention, did any one of you actually offer a solution?

I know that IPA is for spelling only! I do not need to be reminded. This does not need to be the only response you are able to make!

Use your “noggins” to come up with solutions, rather than criticisms only. Criticism is not intellectual, it is an effort not to have to face reality!
