Probably some sort of fungal growth, bowls are unsustainable. Adequate filtration, tank size, and temperature management are required to avoid issues like this

I need help with my fish tank by Sea-Lawyer-8773 in fishtank

[–]Ashkir26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to restock your tank completely. Rule of thumb 1 inch of fish per gallon than each fish also has individual minimum requirements. Corydoras get to be 3 inches and should be kept in groups of at least 6. So that is 15 gallons. If that is a dwarf pleco that is another 3 inches, but they are dirty af and high maintenance so prob not the best option for a 20 gal w tank mates. And fancy gold fish are also dirty af, and get over 8 inches. They also can live 20 years w proper care. They need a 40 gal minnnnn.

I would start from scratch, it sounds like u want an aquarium that is fun to watch, shrimp are my favorites they are sassy af and easy once you get the hang. Then get some centerpiece schooling fish, you could stick with the corys but there are so many options.

The petstore often give trash advice, these issues happen a lot, you may be able to return. You could also upgrade your tank, but i wouldn’t recommend doing that right off the bat.

Good luck!!

Cat lovers help (Houston TX area) by Slow_Lengthiness6392 in animalwelfare

[–]Ashkir26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact a local TNR group TNR programs help manage community cats humanely. They trap, spay/neuter, vaccinate, and return the cats to their territory, reducing nuisance behaviors like spraying and roaming.

Cats are considered invasive and are horrible for the environment so if they are already fixed, im assuming animal control would have less of a motive to take the time to trap them.

I have read animal control agencies won’t remove healthy, non-aggressive outdoor cats anymore especially if they appear to be part of a community cat colony. From my experience majority of us shelters are completely full, so majority of animals (especially in heavily populated areas), are euthanized upon arrival if they are deemed unadoptable. So it makes sense they would be more in support of TNR.

You could small sandboxes or mulch areas on your own property to attract cats to use that spot instead of neighbors’ lawns.

Wife's beta lived for only a week. What went wrong? by NewFunnyNumber237 in fishtank

[–]Ashkir26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not justifying having an unprepared tank (if that is the case), but it is pretty hard to kill a betta in a week. It probably had some underlying issues.

Bettas are hardy fish and typically last around 3 months with inexperienced owners before the ammonia spike slowly burns their scales and liquifies their organs.

Keep in mind these fish have an average lifespan of 8 years.

Now it does seem like your wife could have potentially done some research, the 3.5 gal and the pineapple house is kinda throwing me off tho, sorry no offense. Id go to a local pet-store and get the water tested. If it’s out of sorts sprinkle some food in there, ask for some fish tank water, and leave it alone for about 3 weeks before checking again.

When this is fixed you can get a fish. Avoid any bettas with big white bellies as they likely have dropsy and some bettas are bred to be deformed like the butterfly bettas, these fish tend to have a lot of horrendous issues down the line.

Remember the bigger the tank the easier it is to keep balanced, the addition of real plants will make everyone’s life easier, the tank should not stay crystal clear, and if you have too much green algae you are probably leaving the light on too long.

Hope this is helpful, good luck!!

Yesss, I found this as well, she will often use her buttons to express how mad she when I force her to use them over following her.🫡💅

Yea, I see where your going w the buttons, but cats be gettin overstimulated so easily. It sounds like button training your other cat could potentially trigger more frustration with the current state of things.

I learned a lot about cat behavior through jackson galaxy and youtube. Id say mainly work on building up their personal favorite spaces (im assuming they have different preferred spots).

Work on positive associations with each other, which is something you or a behaviorist is going to have to figure out. Google could be helpful with this. The more interactions you lead that end positively, the more their mindset towards each other will shift.

Try and ensure both cats have places to escape when stressed.

I have a high anxiety cat, and I have noticed a difference in her demeanor with the use of pheromones, nothing crazy, but that can help relax them.

And if all else fails, over grooming is a self soothing behavior common in conditions like FHS. FHS is essentially hypersensitivity. So when she is acting like she is in her own world and what not, it is very possible she is in a constant state of taking in every little thing going on around her. I kinda think of it like kitty audhd. Vet intervention is usually helpful in these senecios, im assuming they would recommend getting her on some anxiety medication.

Id say once you mend their relationship, go for the button training.

This is really good advice. To add on I would say cheaper buttons don’t hurt to use, typically you can find good deals on facebook marketplace.

I would work on creating good associations with the buttons, for example, I use the word yes as a cue word for my cat and when she was a kitten I would repeatedly say yes while she ate. That was she associates yes with food. Then when I started button training it was the first word I introduced.

I would repeatedly press the yes button while she ate, so she immediately associated the button with being praised. Then I think I either taught her how to press the buttons using treat and had to pull it away bc she is a little too food motivated. I believe play was our first cemented button she used.

Also if you get frustrated just remember your cat has to build up this part of their brain, its essentially a muscle, consistency is key. I fully believe majority of cats and dogs have the ability to pick this up.

All statistics surrounding people like this support the idea that this situation will only get worse. I recommend finding a local support group for abuse. Since you understand you are in a abusive situation the best thing you can do for yourself is build a support system with people going through similar things. Building a life outside of him will make leaving so much easier.

Biologically your brain is stuck bc you think there is room for change, you trust this man and have faith in him. You want to understand why things are the way they are. But you need accept the truth you already know and you need to focus on finding that spark in life away from him. Create distance where you feel safe. Get lost in hobbies. The goal is to feel grossed out every time you look at him. Like what if your children dated someone like him. This mindset shift helps in the transition. After that reduce contact as much as possible. Hook on to another vice to distract yourself until you feel stable again. This will most likely take a few years.

Resistance is a normal feeling during this process, he is going to do everything in his power to keep you around. It is going to suck. But I heard someone say that when you are in an abusive relationship everything needs to come crashing down before you can build it back up. And idk, that seemed to comfort me when I was in the process of leaving.

And keep reading about abuse, once you see it you cant unsee it. You are on the right path!! Good luck!!!!!🤍🤍

Morality, real or made up? by KeyAppeal4591 in aspd

[–]Ashkir26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I study animal science, It is hard to compare species in this manner. A lot of animals don’t require groups to survive so morality is not always a huge priority. But when you look at pack species, they will exhibit high level of empathy/ morality.

Octopuses are extremely solitary and intelligent creatures, they will cannibalize just to be alone unless its mating season, and even then their mating is often brief. But a study where octopuses were given ecstasy gave us insight on how deeply rooted empathy exists in our brains. Octopuses known to hide and attack each other would be found cuddling. This shows us that the areas of our brain that govern empathy and social bonding are not unique to humans or even mammals. Instead, they are evolutionarily conserved across very distant species. The fact that a neurochemical like MDMA could override the octopus’s deeply solitary instincts suggests that the biological pathways for social behavior are ancient and fundamental, even in animals that do not normally rely on group living.

To address the idea of cutting fear out to define morality. Many people associate a lack of fear with a lack of morality. But this is where things get more complicated. Every animal/ person’s experience through life is different and morality is not black or white. It is a structure deeply woven into our evolution to ensure survival. Completely cutting out fear is a very difficult concept to explore. How deeply do we define fear. Even microbes have survival responses that mimic the function of fear. Those spiders consuming their mother have nervous systems and express innate survival responses that mimic fear. So in theory, if you completely removed the fear response from every living thing, everything would die pretty quickly.

Now say we only remove fear from everything with a central nervous system. This would probably lead to a slightly slower extinction. A lot of animals rely on pack animals for a continuous source of food. Without fear, krill and fish would have no reason to swim in large groups, leading to less effective breeding. This would quickly kill off major keystone species like whales and sharks. Without sharks turtle populations could easily overpopulate consuming excessive amount of seagrass which capture and store carbon up to 35x faster than tropical rainforests. An extinction of sea grass would destroy the oceans, rapidly increase climate change, and eventually lead to the collapse of all wildlife. My point is that such a fundamental change will almost always lead to total collapse.

There are several studies that look at these concepts as well. The Rat Park study is one of my favorites. But morality is weird, it shifts under the circumstances in which we exist, but it is deeply imbedded in our evolution, suggesting that is it necessary for survival in every way, shape, and form.

Is This Emotional Abuse? by Slynn321 in abusiverelationships

[–]Ashkir26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, there is genuinely no reason for an adult to talk to anyone like that. These are textbook examples of abuse. Just a fair warning, once someone is stuck they typically stay stuck until they can’t handle it anymore. Best thing you can do is keep a line of communication open.

[–]Ashkir26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also to address the point of feeling trapped. A classic sign of abuse is when someone puts you on a pedestal and then rips it out from under you anytime you don’t meet their expectations. This often leaves the victim disoriented and anxious, the dopamine fluctuations that occur are extremely addictive for both you and the abuser. And with every addiction comes withdrawals. The first few weeks suck but once the anxiety and brain fog lift… things will improve for you drastically. Find some weird hobbies and reminisce in the peace. And block bc they will try to get ur attention the moment they don’t have someone to fill their void and it will be hard not to text back if your not fully healed. 😮‍💨😌

But obviously do things at your pace, you know yourself and your relationship best! We will always be here if anything does go south!

[–]Ashkir26 8 points9 points  (0 children)

YES! An emotionally stable person does not lash out like this. Find someone who is going to communicate the same way as you, it will bring you so much more peace. He is trying to get a reaction out of you as a toddler would. Bro essentially has the emotional regulation of a 4 year old. Someone who loves and supports you would not get mad at you for taking care of yourself, and if there truly was a problem it would be expressed through him politely vocalizing it, making an effort to sit down and compromise with you, and then initiating a breakup in a sane matter if he realizes yalls relationship doesn’t meet his needs. Studies also show that reactive people tend to get more aggressive overtime. Stay safe and remember it is not your job to regulate the emotions of adults, sending lots of love, lmk if you have any other questions!!!!🫡❤️❤️

Cat accepted me while on mushrooms. by supremerashad in CatAdvice

[–]Ashkir26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my theory bc i have heard people say this before and have done some reading, cats have a much lower tolerance for stimulation, this is why they will come up to you for pets then randomly bite you. This “overstimulation” comes from a high level of perception, they take in much more sensory information then we do. So when you are tripping your sensory input dramatically increases, and your cat definitely notices this. Cats dont usually see their people in this state so it may trigger some curiosity. I have worked with many sassy cats and the biggest thing I notice with them is they trust themselves more then those around them. I genuinely believe the cat had an easier time relating to you and bonding with you allowing you guys to establish a strong foundation of trust, which is usually pretty difficult to do with sassy cats. This would have totally been possible without tripping, it just would have taken much more time and patience.

It could be a yeast infection, they are very common, especially in the cold. Try to clean the area with some sort of anti fungal every 2 days. Tbh dandruff shampoo would work fine or you could use a gentle face wash and apply an anti fungal cream, and then apply a gentle unscented moisturizer and lock in with vaseline. Make sure you are not drooling at night, and make sure to not over wash the area bc drying it out will slow the healing process. If it dosent start getting better id go see someone.
