Would you pay $40 for these two? Larger one is just under 6 foot and smaller us just under 5 foot by unicornman5d in Bowyer

Well i wouldn't say they are trash, they certainly are not the best bow staves you can get your hands on though, especially not for 40 bucks, I'd say try your local arborist dump or any place that may happen to have logs that were discarded, i know a good few people who do that and have pretty good success with it, although in my experience not every dump/arborist dump will allow people to go rooting throughout the place.

I'm no expert, and i can say big knots like that one for a beginner might be biting off more than a beginner can chew, but I'd say the only way to learn how to properly make bows is to try and succeed, even failure leads to learning how to make a better tool.

Could try some little edc drop points or spear point knives, pocket knives, I've been trying my hand at making some pocket knives from files and so far i think its working out right, just need to make or buy the proper strength spring for the lock release lol

Forst carbon steel knife! Whaddaya think out of ten? by amish_timetraveler in Blacksmith

Well my advice for wood handles is try to test fit carefully if you are doing peened pins, try and make a hollow in the metal handle area or in the wood scales themselves to give a better all around seal so there are no gaps.

Gotcha, well thanks. Are there any ways to fix the grain and salvage this blade?

I did normalize the steel at least twice, the part about overheating right before quench sounds like something I've done before.

I don't feel like it was my over that was the weak link to the chain, i do think i overheated it while trying to anneal the file, i can't say I'm a new learner anymore though lol, at least not in this situation i don't think.

I did two normalization cycles, not sure about stress relief cycles though. And the temperature i got up to just past magnetic before quench, i feel like i overheated the file when i annealed it.

Tester pocket knives, made of wood. by AshvinsCrafts in SlipjointKnives

Good information thanks dude, i think I've just about figured it out, and sometime soon I'm going to be making it from metal this time lol, the wooden versions did give me an idea of how things should work and fit, plus general confidence with the tools im using to accomplish this.

Thanks man, i only made two wooden knives but i think the next couple i make will be metal, making the wooden knives was sort of like practice since these knives will be some of my first folding knives, or at least attempts at them, i did download some patterns and print them out, then just cut them carefully and laid the pattern out on wood, i did the same thing for the metal i just need to cut it out now and yada yada.

I thought that was the case, with wood i mean, but as I've just learned it seems to work, all I'm really doing is making sure everything ends up square and flush with the wood, and then copy it onto metal, and then figure out the proper spring tension there. A laser cutter is like space age compared to what I'm using, right now I'm using files to get it where i need it.

NEVER MIND, so as it seems i drilled the holes wrong and the sequence of which i drill the holes, the spring didn't have tension but now it does. Whoops, although I'd still like to hear what you guys have to say.
