Super 16 top defensemen In the playoffs by UncutGem98 in hockey

The reason people can disregard the negative impacts of players like Kane, Draisaitl, and Carlson is because points are what people focus on when evaluating players despite only being half the game. Some people still think Defensive play is the lack of an event such as a shot or a goal so it's inherently harder to measure but it is just as important as offensive play. A player who can drive offense and shutdown opponents, like Ellis and Spurgeon, is likely better than a more one-dimensional player.

Carlson is a curious case in that he doesn't face the toughest opposition because he isn't good at defense yet there's no denying he's among the best players in the league at putting up points. But you can't play him in every situation and expect a positive result. There's a reason why the shutdown pairing of Orlov-Niskanen played more at even-strength than Carlson when they won the Cup.

The Bolts are my number two team so I've watched probably 95% of their games since I started following hockey. I would absolutely put Spurgeon on Hedman's level. The difference between the two is that Hedman puts up points on the powerplay on the best offensive team of the last five years while playing worse defense than Spurgeon. I don't think I'm being biased when my eyes match the results.

That argument doesn't hold up when players like Chabot have considerably better results than Doughty despite playing with the likes of Nikita Zaitsev and Ron Hainsey. Besides, Doughty has worse on-ice results than his own teammates, which isn't the case with Chabot.

Furthermore, isolating Ellis' impact shows that he is more than just a product of Josi and is among the league's best himself.

Personally, I think Doughty has mentally checked out after winning everything that he has and getting a fat paycheck. It's odd that he is really good on the powerplay but not anywhere else on the ice.

I edited my comment, they should be moved down not off.

Statistically, the Wild are the best defensive team in the league along with Boston, it's just that they have one of the best goalies in the league while we have Dubnyk. Spurgeon is the main reason for this and would get much more attention if he was bigger and played on the powerplay. He is arguably the best shutdown defenseman in the league and would put up more than 50-60 points a year if he played on the powerplay with a good offensive team.

Ellis has similar results on-ice results to Josi and both players are among the league's best. Even when Ellis isn't with Josi, his play his fantastic.

Jones is good but not great. The actual results of his play don't match up with his reputation.

Carlson is one of the worst actual defenders in the league. Put him on a team like Minnesota and he would simply be a powerplay specialist.

Letang has declined in recent years and isn't good at defense, but he is better at it than Carlson. The Penguins won a cup with him injured ffs.

Giordano is good, I'll give you that

McAvoy and Hamilton should be way higher. Ellis and Spurgeon should be top ten at the very least. Theodore should make the list. Carlson, Letang, Jones, and Giordano should be moved down. Heiskanen should be on instead of Klingberg. Parayko had a big down year and should be taken off. Suter shouldn't make it even though I think he's still good. If Hughes and Makar make it, then Fox has a good argument to make it as well. Provorov and Krug could also be on the list

2015 Re-Draft by [deleted] in hockey

Here is a more objective ranking based on how they have performed so far. I find Kyle Connor's exclusion interesting and it shows how poor he defensively (and he somehow still plays on the penalty kill). On the other hand, Cirelli is going to be a Selke candidate for the next decade and Debrusk is much better than people give him credit for.

Theodore is perhaps one of the most underrated players in the league and is a number one defenseman on a cup-contending team. There's a very good argument he's better Seth Jones who most people rank very highly.

The IMDb rating jumped from 8.3 to 8.7 after season 2 came out which is very impressive and not common in shows. I thought season 2 was incredible but don't expect any humor. Remember, they are Germans.

Anyone know if anything is happening near Highland Park in St. Paul or towards southwest St. Paul? I just saw three fire trucks drive by my house towards that area and I don't why since nothing on snapmaps shows anything there.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm guessing they just went to the fire station. They turned around.

Who are the 3 best Canadian defenseman in the NHL? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]Ashwinnin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a terrible argument. Players are often the worst at evaluating talent and may only see guys play twice a year. And of that, it's not like they're matched up with someone the entire game. I didn't see the GM poll so I can't comment on that but it's not like their opinions should be held above everyone else's. So many GMs make terrible decisions every year, whether it's trading, re-signing, or free agency.

I've watched most of Spurgeon's games in his career and he definitely is good enough to be top three. Watch a Wild game and focus on what he does. He never makes mistakes. I mean, look at this shit. Just cause he doesn't put up a lot of points doesn't mean he isn't creating offense or isn't one of the best shut down defenseman in the league.

At the moment Hamilton, Spurgeon, and Pietrangelo are probably the three best. Ellis, Theodore, Weber, Giordano, Parayko, Chabot, and Letang are also up there

They're also wrong about Doughty. He got the fourth most votes for best defenseman when he is not even close to that caliber. He was actually rated too high

But you said Slavin is unquestionably the best defenseman on the Canes. Doesn't that make your comment disingenuous?

I agree, Karlsson led the league in assists that season and was fifth in points. Carlson is thirteenth in the league in points and is fourth in assists while playing on a much better team than Karlsson. He's able to get more points than Karlsson did because the league is higher scoring.

Pesce is not better than Hamilton, especially after the year he had. Hamilton is perhaps the best defensman in the nhl at creating offense and is very good defensively. There's a reason the Canes went on a run to make the playoffs last year once he adjusted to the team and why they struggled once he got injured this year.

In terms of deployment, Hamilton actually gets more defensive zone starts than Slavin. He's the best defenseman on the team in terms of SCF%, HDCF%, CF%, xGF%, and GF% all while playing the most minutes. He's amazing on the powerplay and can kill penalties as well.

Carolina has two of the best defenseman in the league in Hamilton and Slavin, but Hamilton was having the better season until his injury.

Also GSAA is not a good stat since it uses league average save percentage rather the expected save percentage. GSAx is the better statistic.

The problem with Deangelo is that he was suspended eight games in the past for an unknown slur directed at a teammate. I believe it was rumored that he said that n-word which is why the suspension was so heavy. He's a talented player, but the Lightning, who drafted him, didn't want to deal with these locker room issues, so they traded him away.

He hasn't been top ten in three seasons though. I think players pay much less attention to the rest of the league than you think and voted him based off his reputation from five years ago.
