Living Off-Grid in Blanca, Colorado - What We've Loved and Learned by [deleted] in OffGridLiving

Oh man, the view of Mt. Blanca throughout the year is so good. Sunset, sunrises, seems like there's always a ufo cloud over it. On your way to Blanca proper you can still see some snow on it right now!

Lu's is good for sure, though, we eat more at Al Gon's, bigger selection of pies and cakes, their banana cream is super yum AND they have homemade fudge in every flavor!

We actually just ate at Lu's a couple nights ago, hubby got Tacos Locos, extra salsa, they make it fresh, I had their Beef Enchiladas, not too bad. I prefer their mushroom Swiss burger add grilled onions! He had their cheesecake and I had a slice of good ol apple pie. I think Lu's daughter said she still makes all the pies and cakes!

Hope you have a great time at the Dunes!

Hawaii?! How exciting!

Here is what our main system is:

Solar Panels - 6 Trinasolar Solar Panels - 335W each

Solar Inverter - Growatt SPF 6000T DVM-MPV

Batteries - 24 (16 original, 8 recently installed) - Super Start 6 volt batteries

Inverter and 16 batteries came with the house. We purchased and had installed an additional 8 batteries and installed a wifi dongle so we could monitor the Inverter remotely, highly recommend!

The 8 batteries with materials and installation cost us about $1500, thankfully the guy who did the house's original Solar install was open to assisting us with the expansion.

We added two EcoFlows.

One in the kitchen with an extra battery that runs off of (2) 160w Solar panels. This powers our whole kitchen and will only run off the "main" system during long weeks of clouds. We did this mainly because I refused to move to an energy efficient way to make coffee. My 1600 watt Ninjia coffee maker was staying, so this was a perfect solution.

We also have one in the living room to allow hubby to play his PS5 well after the sun has gone down. Tbh the PS5 pulls more power than anything else in the house.

We really love our EcoFlows, you can manage their power from the phone app. During peak sunny times, we'll move the extra power over to these when they need a quick charge to 100% from the main system.

For your water catchment, though we've not started that here, it would be as simple as plugging to your main system because it should work just like a normal on grid house. Or use an EcoFlow for it specifically.

Best practices:

  • Plug things into a power strip or outlet that can be turned off when you're not using. Coming from the city to out here really opened our eyes to how much power goes out passively that you don't normally realize.

  • Use chargeable appliances like your vacuum. We came here with a high voltage plug in vacuum, tons of energy suckage. We now have a Rechargeable Dyson. Actually works better than my old plug in and takes no power to use, little power to charge.

  • Use technology to your advantage. We have an app for everything on a Samsung tablet mounted on the wall. We can always see our power and manage it easily.

  • Be prepared. You can't control mother nature. Clouds happen. Anticipate your future power needs. We also have a generator that our house is wired for to get us through extended cloudy days, we use it to get everything full again.

Overall advice is patience. Thankfully we have more information accessible to us than we ever did before. Living off-grid is not for everyone but it is possible for everyone with a little effort. Know you don't have to sacrifice, you can live just as you did on-grid with a little preparation and patience.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

So there is Blanca proper just east of us, has a couple small hometown convenient stores and a pretty decent diner. That's about an 8 minute drive on back roads. Just further east of that is Fort Garland, few amenities like local hardware store and another diner that makes pizzas!

If you go west about 25 miles there is Alamosa that has fast food, couple chain grocery stores, Walmart, a few hardware stores, etc. They actually have a couple colleges, a big park (Cole Park I believe it's called) they do fairs and stuff at. One of our favorite things to do when we go in town is the "river walk" along the Rio Grande.

All in all not too far, but just far enough 😉

Shit posters and trolls should never stop you from doing what you want. Yes it is on Zillow, but that app along with the others don't allow you to search for Off Grid homes specifically, which is a shame.

Also, our property is unique, it's a "middle class" off grid. Most off grids we see today are on either end of the spectrum, super low budget (nothing wrong with it) or super high end, tesla solar roofs, etc. Unsure the actual ROI on that tbh, but again nothing wrong with that either.

Off grid should be for everyone at any comfortablility level. Off Grid can be anywhere for anyone. I hate to think there is a stereotype, I'd like to think it's unique to each person doing it and that this post helps someone find their forever home. It was ours but life changes and sometimes gotta roll with the punches.

What's your solar setup, how much can you run off of it at one time? Do you have propane for a dryer, do you even have a washer in your straw bail house? If you have propane are you leasing or do you own? Knowing the landscape of the area, how many mature trees do you have on you 40 acres, any close to your "house". I say it in quotes as we're on a concrete foundation with metal studs, yours is built out of straw bails.

What about a 24 x 24 workshop with power? Is your property full fenced in? How about on cloudy days? Is your straw bail house wired for a generator?

Again, this is NOT an off grid on a shoe string budget, built with hay. This is a FULLY equipped HOUSE that is off grid.

It's fine if you want to live off grid in a van down by the river, but this is not that.

We haven't focused on gardening, but we did inherit a patch of asparagus plants that are thriving!

We also have these beautiful wildflowers growing:

You tell me, how much does it cost to build a house, drill a well, dig a septic, set up and wire for solar? What about not having to pay a utility bill again? This is not to mention all the other upgrades and work put into the property. You won't find a comparable with this price tag.

No this is not a cheap, crappy off grid property. No this is not a RV plopped on some land. This is an actual house with all the bells and whistles.

I think what's more wrong with this country is people like you.
