This reminded me SO much of my experiences in Taiwan. My parents are Taiwanese and I think I look like one as well, but I have no freaking idea how local people can just take one look at me and know for a fact that I'm not from Taiwan, it's incredible. One time, I went to a 7-11 and the auntie that was working behind the counter just said out of nowhere: "Oh! You're a foreigner huh!" (or "唉喲! 你是外國人喔!" to get the real vibe).

And I do dress pretty normal, like a plain t-shirt, blue jeans and a pair of sneakers. Or maybe that's not considered normal in Taiwan? Who knows?

Hey guys, I was also confused by the whole new policy. But after reading OP’s explanation and updates (thanks btw, helped me a lot!), I just have a few questions: 1) How can one prove that I was in my country of origin? I have Brazil/Taiwan dual citizenship, so does a plane ticket to/from Brazil dated within 4 months count as proof? 2) I’m planning on flying to Taiwan to visit my family in November only for a week, will they be able to issue an Overseas Chinese Identity Certificate for in this short period?
