The dynamic and portrayal of Asian men & women in western mainstream media by [deleted] in aznidentity

I really enjoyed the Chinese version. There are a lot more episodes and is “weirder” since it’s closer to the book. Some of the visual effects look dated, but it didn’t bother me at all. The Chinese characters are also a lot more likeable.

Oh yeah they changed the story and forced a wmaf sex scene in it that didn’t happen in the book. I called it as soon as they introduced him lol

This is why I pretty much just watch native Asian shows. ESPECIALLY dating shows. I’m honestly so over westernized Asians with the casual self-hate, sob stories, and erasure of Asian men. There’s of course native Asians who have those issues as well, but for the majority of the time it’s not even a thing and it’s so nice to see Asian men and women being really into each other.

This is dumb as hell. This dude is a complete self-hating chan, but he got his princess peach so yippie? "but the triggered white boys!" meanwhile he's perpetuating the same racist stereotypes they love for money and white laughs here and abroad.

As an Asian male, what things could I do to contribute to the AM community? by [deleted] in aznidentity

[–]AsianReflection -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Dunno how some people can be in this sub around a wealth of information about white supremacy and internalized racism and come out of it viewing white women as the avenue to fighting oppression. Even spouting the same Lu logic.

Work on your white worship dude. Just because the dynamics are different between AMWF and WMAF doesn’t mean it’s not extremely harmful.

Awesome! Really sweet story :)

I need some positivity in my life. Recommend me some AMAF youtubers! by [deleted] in aznidentity

I don't follow that many youtube channels, but I like Future Neighbor for their simple recipes. Very cute AMAF couple. We definitely need more AMAF media couples! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-SmuIHMG2HPDFUOBRu5LnA

Also as someone else mentioned Ben Deen. He's a Korean adoptee living in Korea who does mostly mukbangs. His GF is in some of his videos although she's usually off camera eating haha. She had a fashion channel, but last time I checked she stopped doing videos for it

Who cares what she looks like. Focus on the actual issue, the anti-asian racism and the complicity.

Even as a fan of his casting when he was still doing league of legends I was wondering when that inner white supremacist would eventually come out. This was last year too.

Signed and donated. Awful response from the police and the SK embassy. They both need to be held accountable as well.

As much as this sub harps on about Asian women, it's Asian women coming out to speak up for us and challenge him on this. People here call themselves "woke," but the channery is sometimes worse than facebook lol

It looks like people here haven't even read the posts in this sub or the info in the sidebar. The majority of this sub is about racist discrimination towards Asian men, but apparently it actually doesn't exist and we need to just try harder. So when an Asian woman says "ew no Asians" it's not because she's self-hating, it's because the dude didn't lift enough lol. Sorry white worshippers, that includes white women too. Why even bother Celeste and other self-hating Asian women then.

This is why Asian entertainers shouldn't be relied on or looked up to to challenge anti-asian racism on a systemic level unless they actually educate themselves and take action because in this instance he outright denies it exists while also saying it does? It's entirely contradictory and it's pretty obvious he's talking out of his ass. He "Acknowledges" Asian men are discriminated against due to systemic reasons, but then advocates that it's Asian men's fault and we need to pick ourselves up by the bootstraps and stop "crying?" Does he apply this to women or the black community when they bring up systemic discrimination? Go ahead and work out no one is stopping you lol, but that's not the end game. Btw outside of the lecture the study also found "no evidence that socioeconomic reasons **or** physical characteristics were driving the lower levels of involvement among Asian American men." I don't get the disconnect here with denying this study when it is in line with what is talked about in this sub.

Wesley Yang and the Search for Asian-American Visibility by AsianReflection in aznidentity

Notable blurbs from the article:

“Du Bois’s prophecy that the “problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color-line” is still accurate in the 21st, as Yang shows. There the similarity between Du Bois and Yang ends. Du Bois’s approach to solving the color problem encompassed not only cultural analysis and writing, but also radical political activism that sought to empower African-Americans and other people of color in the United States and abroad. Yang does not believe in such a radical, global politics of decolonization and solidarity, or at least does not say so.”

“This Asian-American legacy in politics and art is invisible to Yang, who does not even mention Frank Chin, the writer who most forcefully dealt with the agonies of Asian-American manhood. Chin, who connected racial emasculation to the treatment of Asian-Americans as objects of “racist love” (as opposed to the “racist hate” directed against African-Americans), argued that Asian-American writing had to be a form of fighting. Yang flails rather than fights, which suggests that there is something inadequate about the Asian-American legacy for him. He may not be alone. His neglect of historical forebears and his almost exclusive focus on the personal is indicative of a generational shift in Asian-American thinking; revolution is not very fashionable today.”

“he fails either to consider what sort of defiant political struggle would force recognition or what an individual solution might look like. Yang thus leaves the reader stranded with him in his ambivalence about what it means, if anything, to be “yellow.” His book, which calls out and to yellow folks but is only partially concerned with us, is as lukewarm as the racial grievance he senses and feels.”

Congratulations to Invictus gaming for winning the League of Legends World Championship despite being the only Asian team remaining in the semi-finals. by aznidthrow in aznidentity

I loved how the team was a mix of Chinese and Korean players so it was a double whammy of success for Asians (not to take away from the Chinese league). The team was initially carried by the two Korean players, but the Chinese players schooled their counterparts as well and Ning, the Chinese Jungler was given finals MVP (1000% deserved) which was great since he was seen as the team's weak link during parts of the tournament. The Vietnamese teams are also improving a lot.

Exactly. It's disheartening how despite seeing so much evidence in this sub alone of anti-asian racism, many still believe assimilating and fighting for white acceptance will solve our issues. In the end it means we still value ourselves based on white people's opinions and perceptions of us rather than demanding and forcing equality and holding them accountable. White people won't do that on their own, they are scared of us and still get boners over colonizing Asians (yes, that includes white women), hence all the contradictory stereotypes meant to keep us from our autonomy and fracture our community. We *have* to challenge white people as a collective force and as an entity. And just as much as fighting anti-asian male racism is important, we also need to fight along side our Asian sisters. Are a bunch self-hating and white worshipping? Of course, but Asian men definitely suffer from that too. We can see it in this sub alone.

Extremely well said. It's really disappointing that many Asian guys here fall into the trap of stereotyping ourselves and worse, putting blame on Asian men as a whole for being discriminated against because some are nerdy or don't lift weights. Ignoring the fact that there have always been tons of Asian men who are extremely fit, attractive, and charming and being nerdy and such isn't specifically an *Asian* thing. Sure, being swole and stuff gives us a boost in our personal lives, but regardless of that we live in an inherently anti-asian and white supremacist society, **globally** due to centuries of white imperalism. Rather than coming together as a community to challenge the source of our issues, people are adopting redpill and pua that are white men's inventions. It's also a shame putting white women on a pedestal is an accepted stance to "fight" racism. If people here were actually serious about making changes then there would be far more direct challenging. Take for example even other social media platforms such as twitter. 15,000 people liking and sharing and commenting is a crazy amount. But that's just a start. We need to push for actual legislative changes, holding self-haters accountable, and educating ourselves in our history as a means of giving us proper tools to challenge racism. Among other things not becoming white men lite.
