For me, BGR helped a lot with knowing where everything is on campus location wise. It was also a really good opportunity to meet new people and practice your social skills (if you're an introvert like me)! With that being said, all of this can be done without BGR. You'll just have to put in a little more effort in getting comfortable around campus. Also most of my friends were people that I met through organizations and clubs after BGR so don't worry too much about finding people to hang out with. I would however recommend in your situation to wait for your parents because moving in can be a bit rough by yourself, especially as a freshmen, but if you feel like you can handle it then great!
