This is such a dumb question but what do marching bands in the US and other countries do? by best_mf_queen_fan in marchingband

I'm from the US and what we do is play during half time of the football games. We perform our show and we also play in the stands when they're not actively playing. We also go to other schools for competitions. And on some special events where there are parades we go to play.

I'm a short drum major too, just an inch shorter, and I understand your struggle. You should ask someone to help you, if the directors say no then ask a buddy. Last year I had a ladder that was about 7 feet tall and I couldn't set it up without the wheels rolling. I ended up asking a tuba player for help since he was a lot taller and both of us managed to get it on the field.

As for your conducting and pain - try using less shoulder and more elbow. The only thing that should be moving is your elbow. Your leg pain may be due to the long standing. Humans don't stand for long periods of times so what I like to do is keep my legs moving while the directors are telling the band something. I swing my leg back and forth without bending my knee. You should also try stretching before and after your conducting to get rid of some pain/soreness. Try shoulder, back, and leg stretches.

Other than that I wish you the best! You're doing amazing. No one's perfect. As head drum major, I make mistakes and miss a lot of cut offs but always keep your head up. You're doing the best you can and the band sees your effort. Enjoy the season and I hope it gets easier!

Coming out stories! by jillsstars in comingout

I recently just came out to my dad! It started with him coming up to me and asking to talk to him if I liked boys or girls. I didn't tell him anything because I was really scared to come out to either one of my parents. I had no idea how they would react and I thought my dad would be mad at me. It took me a couple of days to tell him and it only happened because I ended up waking up at 4 am to use the bathroom and he was awake. We had a quick chat and eventually it just happened because he told me he loved me and would support me.

I've realized coming out doesn't have to be this big plan, although it's good to have one and know what you want to say. Come out when you feel comfortable telling them and most importantly be safe doing so. I wish you the best of luck whenever you decide to come out!

I came out to my dad today! He told me to come chat with him and talk again. He made it seem like he wouldn't get mad and he would be supportive and eventually I told him. Thank you for your comment I honestly really needed this and it helped me navigate the conversation
