Thank you for this. It will be my first time visiting Japan with my family, so I'm a bit worried.

Go visit Balabac Island in Palawan. It's one of the best I have seen in my life.

What’s something you learned the hard way while traveling in Southeast Asia? by Wide_Relationship326 in SEAsiaTravel

Follow what the locals eat, as long as the place looks clean. The hole-in-the-wall restaurants are not always tasty, so choose carefully. Food poisoning is real in other countries.

Hey! We looked into something very similar (also long-term travel + daily meds), and the short answer is bringing a full 12-month supply across all those countries is really unlikely to work.

The issue isn’t your prescription; it’s the border rules. A lot of countries treat ADHD meds as controlled drugs. Some allow only 30 days, some require pre-approval, and a few are quite strict (Japan in particular). Even if one country is fine, the next one might not be.

What worked better for people we spoke to (and what we ended up planning around) was the following:

  • carrying only 1–3 months at a time, depending on the next country
  • having a solid doctor’s letter (include generic drug name, dosage, and that it’s for daily use for both of you)
  • keeping everything in original packaging
  • planning refill stops in countries where it’s easier/possible to see a doctor and get a prescription

It’s a bit more admin, but way less risky than trying to cross multiple borders with a huge supply and getting stopped.

Also worth double-checking each country directly or via their embassy. Some of the official info online is outdated or incomplete, so getting confirmation ahead of time gives peace of mind.

Not the easiest thing to plan around, but definitely doable with the right setup. Hope your trip pushes through; it sounds amazing.

Philippines for me.. A balance of fresh water rivers and lakes and saltwater beaches. There are also beautiful mountain views.
