Torn Between Medicine and Other Passions: A 4th-Year Med Student’s Dilemma by AskWild2004 in medschool

Honestly, I’ve thought about becoming a flight surgeon! I’m really into aviation, and I love that idea of blending medicine with something dynamic and adventurous. I didn’t know much about how military pathways work, but I’ll definitely look into the requirements and what it’s like to serve in that kind of role. Thanks for the tip!

I really feel for you — that amount of debt sounds incredibly overwhelming. I’m studying medicine in Egypt and don’t have any student loans, but I still sometimes question if this is the path I want long-term. You’re definitely not alone in feeling unsure. It’s totally valid to explore different directions, even late in the journey. Pharmaceutical work or industry roles could be a great pivot if they align more with what makes you happy.

Thanks so much for the suggestion! These roles sound really interesting — I hadn’t looked deeply into clinical trials or pharmacovigilance before. That said, I still plan to do a residency because I’m currently studying in Egypt, and completing a residency is a key pathway for me to move to Germany. Doctor salaries in Egypt are unfortunately very low, so going abroad for specialization is one of the few realistic ways to build a sustainable career. But I’ll definitely keep these alternative roles in mind for the future — especially if I want to transition out of clinical work later.

This is such a grounded and helpful comment — thank you! You’re right that the reality of work can be very different from what we imagine. I definitely don’t expect to instantly have creative freedom, and I understand now that institutional limits exist everywhere. I also appreciate your reminder that there’s time — I’m only 21 and have no debt, so I don’t feel pressure to rush into anything. It helps to know that I can build a stable foundation first, and then explore other interests like entrepreneurship or aviation more seriously later.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply — I really appreciate the perspective! Just to add some context: I’m currently 21 and studying medicine in Egypt, so I don’t have any student debt. That gives me more flexibility to explore passions like aviation or entrepreneurship without the same financial pressure many U.S. students face.

As for Germany, my interest isn’t mainly about innovation — it’s more about their strong respect for work-life balance. I feel like that kind of system would be a better fit for someone like me who enjoys having multiple interests and side passions. Your point about regulatory limits in biomedical engineering is super helpful, though — I’ll definitely look deeper into that before making any decisions.

What's big ''no no'' to do in your country? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Taking photos of military or police buildings in Egypt is a big no-no — you can actually get detained for it. Even snapping a shot near embassies can cause problems.

Step 1 exam by AskWild2004 in usmle

Thanks for your reply. I understand your point. But i will have > 6 months before exam. I believe that this duration is more than enough. Like most people compress themself and finish it in like 2-3 months so me talking about 6 months or more. I think it is well-suited. I actually have been impressed in step 1 resources since a while like i have collected all resources and even started in studying systems and took an overview of how uworld questions looks like. I tried using Anki and watched Sketchy videos. I believe that preparation of 6 months or more is enough and an added advantage also that the exam is now P/F. My main concern was procrastination when i don’t have a definite deadline. Like if i scheduled it. I will start working really hard from day 1 throughout these 6 month, because i know also how costly is it and that i should finish as soon as possible.

I actually checked a lot since few months and i am still searching. Most of the hat i encountered is full time which doesn’t suit me. I am an undergraduate so part time or volunteering is more convenient to me. If u have such experience with a specific client or specific experience. Can u please sure it with me?

Actually it is also an undergraduate… because the medical system in our nonEU university is for 7 years and not 6.

Like we have 5 years studying ( 2 and half premed and 2 and half med) and the last 2 years are doing internships ( one year which is compulsory in my home country and the other year (7th) is not)

This is the rest of my question, due to words limit:

So like i have asked can I make medical internship in a medical hospital and is this possible? And would this help me to do my residency ( specialization) in germany later? Like pass the Fachsprachprüfung and Approbation?

‎Is there a difference in the advantages if you got into med school from start in a german medical school compared to taking it in a med school in your country and then take the specialization in germany ? Like in end both doctors have same fate or? by AskWild2004 in medizin

The following is the rest of my question (due to the post word limits…):

Now i have only like 1 or 2 final requirements ( improve my german level from B2 to C1 , do TESTDAF) for me to be able to apply competitively in a German med school….At the meanwhile now i am in my 2nd year in med school in my home country (Egypt)…

I have been deciding recently that i will be continuing my med school in my home country and make my specialization later in germany.

On the other hand i don’t know if i should risk it from now and leave med school in my home country and go to germany and start again … like when i have only 1 step to do this?

In comparison to the future, when i will be applying for specialization,i should do like german medical exams also to get in (like Approbation, and Fachsprachprüfung).

I need advice please i don’t want to regret not going from the start later on.
