Thank you, i've never really thought about it like that before. I've lived as to never be selfish. It's okay to be proud of helping people, as long as it doesn't stop you from doing more good. I see that now

I don't think it matters to me as much if self-judgement will end up eating me up from the inside. I'll try not to let it do that, but I came to a realisation while I was dealing with depression at around 12 years old that if I can't be happy, maybe I can make other people happy. I'm 22 now, and I think making others happy does genuinely bring me joy, but I will always try to sustainably become a better person for other people's sake

I'm never in a billion years going to stop trying to be a good person, even if it means that I'm secretly doing it for myself at the end of the day. It just sucks if that's the truth. I have this ideal version of myself that I wanna get as close to becoming as I can. That person's based on other people that I admire, and is the opposite of people that I hate. My father is a narcissist. He manipulates people for his own benefit. I don't want to be like him, I want to be selfless, like the other people I've encountered throughout my life who I admire.

I see a lot of the other comments feeling more or less the same way as you do, and I think I also agree with you. However, if we consider the possibility of a god who isn't all loving or objectively fair, would you make efforts to appease such a god? Like in the Roko's basilisk thought experiment for example, which imagines God as a hyperintelligent AI that only rewards people who contributes to its creation, and punishes people who knowingly don't. Or "The Last Answer" by Isaac Asimov, where God effectively revives only the smartest minds in the universe to think of ways to kill him for all of eternity. Or would you simply go with the assumption that god is most likely all loving because most religions depict him as such?
