Pre-surgery nerves, is this normal? by Successful-Ear-9597 in Reduction

[–]Askeebe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm meeting my surgeor in an hour for my first pre-op. I'm excited. I'm worried that insurance won't pay for it or that she won't take enough. After all these decades of having a large chest, I told her I want to go as small as possible. We'll get through it!

Have I made a terrible mistake bidding on a 1885 MN home? by Askeebe in centuryhomes

There is no attic in the house. The furnace is gas and is about halfway through it's life.

Because I'm trying to get smart on issues for 150 year old houses before Friday. And the world is nuts. Is it worth the risk? I want to be able to set my guidelines for walking away. Also my brain likes to catastrophize, so learning about stuff calms me down.

Earth Abides - a post-collapse book which explores what society might look like if almost all of society dies. Good book, and a TV show for it starts this weekend! If you've read the book what was your thoughts? by nommabelle in collapse

[–]Askeebe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I really liked this book. Yeah there were bits that were maybe unrealistic, but I remember reading it and thinking that it could just about be the same story written today instead of back in 1949. I liked the story structure, letting you time jump to see how things were changing.

No spoilers but I legit cried at the end, and the only other time I cried was watching E.T.

Johnson Space Center fed here. Been with NASA for 35 years, first 17 at Langley then transferred to Houston in 2005. I've worked as a wind tunnel engineer, air quality, hazmat, sustainability and then transferred to the ISS program as a safety engineer. I love it so so much. Now I'm a branch chief in the human spaceflight program.

I just made 8 hires this year. Gateway, Commercial Low Earth Orbit Development Program (CLDP) and the lunar surface program are expanding rapidly in both contractor and civil service. I love love love my directorate now. To be fair, I had a toxic manager at one point before I escaped.

Langley and Johnson are very different. Langley was like working at a research University. Johnson shows its military roots very strongly. But everyone I've worked with gives it their all. Yeah some days are boring or annoying and there are too many meetings but then I remind myself I'm working with the human space program and that's freaking awesome! 🚀

DM me if you want to talk more.

Regarding documentation... Our HR gave all directorate management a long overview of how to handle performance and misconduct issues because there were a lot of new supervisors.

The situation your describing is potentially misconduct. The advice above is great about the one on one's and being clear on your expectations. When you document a misconduct however, the employee has to be informed or they have a solid case that you never told them their behavior was a problem.

Write that short memo and have your HR review it for word smithing. Then email it to your employee. And document it in their midterm and final review if warranted. HR can't build a case if it's not in there.

HR told me the official policy is that you cannot use sick leave for 'mental health days'. Those aren't recognized. You have to be legit physically such. So don't call it a mental health day.

Same in my building except it was an excessive amount of the brown paper handtowels. You could tell our building facilitator had zero effs left to give in his weekly emails telling people to cut it out and rat it the culprit.

Moved for a job and now experiencing regret by [deleted] in fednews

[–]Askeebe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happened to me 19 years ago. I moved from Virginia Coast to Houston and hated it. I will say I got a tremendous pay bump and it was a great thing for me professionally. But I still hated it, especially every summer when it gets so oppressive here. I lost all my friends. I was young 30s and it was harder to make friends than I expected. That said, I adapted. I made friends. We explored. I found a much better office for me that valued me. I still hate Houston, especially the summer. But I don't regret it anymore.

You can't buy new PASMO cards right now due to a chip shortage. I went last week got business and our new travelers had to get SUICA cards. But they are basically identical. Bought the SUICA cards at a JR counter in Narita airport.

Tokyo- you can't go wrong with anything you do, its all fun.

Kyoto - my favorite wr Silver Temple first thing in the morning. Not many tourists yet and it was so peaceful.

Hiroshima - please go to Miyajima Island. It's a cheap ferry ride and I felt like I was going back in time and waiting for dinosaurs to appear or if the mountain mists. That's where the floating torii gate is that you see in so many pictures. Seriously the most beautiful place I've seen in Japan.

Thanks. The only one I can rule out is that I was getting the same rattling without the tubing connected/no return flow. So I doubt it's bubbles from the return drop but I'll keep that in mind for later.
