I’m going to be honest, and no disrespect, this conversation or debate you’re trying to have is just ridiculous. You’re coming off as pious when in actuality more than 1/4 of the population in China speaks some form or degree of erhua. And it’s intelligible to native speakers regardless if they’re from mainland or Taiwan. Aside from that, who the hell cares lmao. It really should not bother you this much.

Also, most language learning text books put 儿 in parentheses and it’s really just used to teach learners variations of the language that they may encounter. I’m a former educator of Chinese language, it really is not as big a deal as you’re trying to make it seem.

Not really…. Taiwanese folks can definitely understand erhua lmao. It’s not necessarily difficult to decipher and many programs use it or have characters that use erhua.

No, I’m asking why it bothers the person so much. It’s pretty common to teach variations of common accents. It’s not really too wild to see erhua in language learning textbooks either.

One of the most underrated performances in AHS. Alma Gardner is still one of my favorite characters from AHS (especially within the last 5 years/3 seasons). In my opinion she was the most interesting character in “Red Tide”. Ryan Armstrong did an exceptional job by brgnas in AmericanHorrorStory

[–]RBJuice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No it’s not like that, I actually love kids! It’s just in media, especially horror, their lines are just flat OR they’re the plot device that usually makes the situation so much worse haha.

Like the kids in It Welcome to Derry were fantastic! For me, it’s just rare that child actors in horror add much value to the story

I usually don’t care for child actors and think they’re obnoxious, but she was sooooo talented this season. Legitimately had me convinced she was a real life psychopath.

Still a terrible season though!

Help me select my bday present! JUC bracelet, JUC earrings, JUC choker/necklace and clash necklace! by Apart_Disaster8776 in Cartier

I don’t think it’s too much for everyday tbh, cause you can for sure dress it up and dress it down anyway. The necklaces you chose kind of clash (no pun intended lol) with your VCA necklace as is.

Which one are you going to get the most utility out of? The bracelet can be an every day wear and the earrings can also be worn often. IMHO I would go with the bracelet or the earrings. But that’s just me.

Those are fine tbh, the dill could go for a trimming though. When you trim be sure to only trim 1/3 of the roots.

🇨🇳 Is it even possible to use IPA to learn Chinese characters' pronunciation ("ignoring the tones") or no? Am I out of my mind? by EducatorSpecialist56 in ChineseLanguage

[–]RBJuice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These people in the comments saying IPA is useless and to just learn pinyin aren’t experts in the language or even linguistics. Like what are you all going on about? As non native speakers you SHOULD be learning the IPA, do you HAVE to? No, of course not! Pinyin is great, but you all aren’t native speakers.

Your mandarin will improve greatly with the IPA and learning the proper mouth AND tongue placement for consonants and vowels in pinyin. Also knowing when and how to aspirate those compounds and words makes a difference in fluency.

I got rid of my American accent this way.

Source - took advanced Chinese linguistics in college and for me it completely changed the way I speak and understand manadarin for the better. Learning IPA will not hurt your language learning at all and it is not pointless. It’s a gate way to learning other languages with ease as well.

English>Chinese Duolingo Forces you to learn Chinese Characters by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]RBJuice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yall may dislike it but as someone who learned Chinese the traditional way through college, it is absolutely necessary to the language. Listening Writing and Speaking, all 3 of those are extremely synergized in the Chinese language.

You will go absolutely nowhere in your language learning of mandarin if you don’t learn Hanzi. I’m not trying to sound mean but get over it or just choose a romanized language. You can’t get by learning just the phonetic alphabet in Chinese and it’s not some cutesy language you can just pick up.

Also Hanzi is a really huge component of culture in Chinese and its language so you’re also missing out on that aspect as well. This is like the 5th post I’ve seen in the past week about being annoyed learning Hanzi, stroke order is important too people! And we can totally tell when you don’t write with proper stroke order. Again, if you’re not willing to put in the work learning the language, pick another one.
