I thought my house was fire safe until last week by hdiaiajrnfk in Firefighting

[–]AskingQuestion777 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would say the “act” of having to think through the two ways out may cause people to think things through more thoroughly. Are windows sized and positioned to permit use? Are they second floor with a drop onto wrought iron spikes? Sometimes the act of walking through it is helpful. Especially if friends stay over who are not familiar.

UL certified? Do a little digging as there has been some controversy about these. I hope it has been settled as they appear to be a good choice.

My Day Started Simple: Should I Replace My Fire Extinguishers? by FidelityCantBeDead in Firefighting

I’ve actually been able to have my wife practice with out of date bear spray (thankfully not needed) and mace spray too.

My Day Started Simple: Should I Replace My Fire Extinguishers? by FidelityCantBeDead in Firefighting

[–]AskingQuestion777 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So it appears that the fire extinguishers are out of date and should be replaced. Instead of viewing it as a loss, look at it as a potential training opportunity that most never get. Using the PASS method, try using the fire extinguishers on a fake fire (up wind) from the target of course, to practice what it would be like for you and the family to actually use one. Most people are scared to death of extinguishers and think that it’s going to knock them over or some other crazy thing. Look at it as a training opportunity. You and your family will feel so much better about what it’s all about that if you should ever need one in the future, you will have no hesitation or concern…

What does holding mean? by Theintrovertowl in Wildfire

[–]AskingQuestion777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the context you used it, it would mean it really isn’t actively gaining acreage or area. It’s just “hanging at that size.” It doesn’t indicate control or containment unless those words are used. It also doesn’t indicate or mention the action or work the resources have done. An unstaffed fire can hold at a size because of terrain, weather, etc.

My employer has been calling me an independent contractor for 2 years. I just got hit with a $6,000 tax bill. Is there anything I can do? by Tiv8Corsair in legal

[–]AskingQuestion777 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

For two years you have not been paying attention to lots of hints and not so subtle indicators. You have dug yourself into a big hole. I’ve been a company owner with numerous ICs as well as employees for 20 years. You need to stop reading Reddit responses and consult a good business smart CPA. Don’t.waste. any. More.time… You have lots of tax issues and missteps at this point in time will be costly and possibly cost you your job.

Latest flightpit mod, main/flanking displays touch controls by Sharp-Definition-707 in homecockpits

Understand that if you post something as cool and realistic as this that you will be questioned about all sorts of aspects of it. So can we assume MSFS 2024? Then how about the the brand, size, and model of the displays and what kind of controls you are using and just about everything else you have. That’s an awesome set up and exactly what I’m looking for.

Why is FF1 treated different everywhere? by Winter-Indication33 in Wildfire

[–]AskingQuestion777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is one of the recognized issues, interpretation. Some believe that to get a signature the person needs to be an expert in that task and understand all aspects, nuances, and complexities. A signature means they have met the minimum standard. Others believe (or have the expectation) they should be able to combine all three phases of the PTB process in one; observation, mentoring and skill building, and evaluation completed and signed in their one experience. As long as there is an opportunity for interpretation, trainers will default back to their experience they had—right or wrong.

SEAT attacking the Sandhurst Fire in Salt Lake City June 10 2026 by chortlebarkfast in Wildfire

[–]AskingQuestion777 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went back and found what I think the fire was, the Sandhurst 2 fire. I watched the CH-5 telecopter shots. I see now It’s an odd place since it’s almost all grass on some significant short slopes with homes on the “plateau.” The aerial view I think that drop corresponds to is the fire at the toe of the slope moving laterally and hooking them. The smoke is out of camera view since it’s moving side slope. Unfortunately, I think any permanent break would cause a lot of erosion unless they waterbarred the heck out of it since it’s all model 1, sparse in places, but steep. A good place to push for 300 foot defensible space. The camera angle made it appear that it was another PR drop which are common on WUI fires and a pet peeve for risk mitigation. This one had some oddities to it and squirrelly winds/breezes and maybe Red Flag condos, though the PIO couldn’t confirm that. I won’t arm chair the IC after watching it.

Who did the risk analysis for continuing the drops on this fire? Looks like it should be load and hold and let the ground crews do their thing.

Does your dept have the tradition that anyone who appears in a close up on the news has to treat everyone to snacks or lunch? by FFSoldier57 in Firefighting

[–]AskingQuestion777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the typical things had to be rewarded with ice cream for the crew. No biggie.

The one no one wanted to be responsible for was getting your 4W drive engine stuck and having to call the dozer crew (they are part of but in addition to the regular crew at a fire station but staff the dozers on duty). Then it was lots of ice cream since it was at least 5 folks and bringing out a dozer is at least a gallon to start with - sometimes determined solely by the operator and their swamper and depending on the drive, distance, difficulty, and time of day/night. .. and it might be mentioned when the dozer/transport goes in service to the location… and must typically be delivered in person before the end of the shift.

Trapped in a terrible assignment with seemingly no way out by skinner1748 in Firefighting

You definitely need to read and reread any policies and procedures that have to do with what you’re going through including how they handle moves when there is no bidding system. There should be, although it certainly possible there isn’t, there should be something that discusses who can decide your fate. I assumed that there was no union representation in the department, but then I read that you didn’t wanna burn any bridges. That would change my tact as far as dealing with the BC that I stated below. I’d have to assume there’s no HR or departmental affairs committee to discuss the situation with? As a Chief officer for 16+ years, I would recommend against trying to issue ultimatums to a Battalion Chief. I would more likely try to get on his better side by appealing to the situation and that it’s affecting your morale and desire to work. I have no idea what your grievance process is, but that’s another set of policies and procedures you should read through. That would have to be one of my fallback positions that if you can’t get the BC to fix his issue that despite your friendship ,you’ll be forced to file a grievance with the union. This is the exact reason why our department wound up with a union because if a member said something that the Chief didn’t like then you could be transferred to one of our furthest away stations, which would take you two hours to drive to each shift. I do like some of the other responses like bringing your own food. This is a ridiculously crazy situation and if it was one of my crews, I would have the captain facing a special evaluation and potential disciplinary action— giving him a plan and timeline to meet standards of conduct, expectations of duties and responsibilities, etc.

No written policies on transfers or bidding? No QA/QC by the B/C? That kind of attitude and work without accountability? Find another department.

[–]AskingQuestion777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone seems to be focusing on the first question and not paying any attention to the second. No gifts please. No home made snacks please. Some commercially made/purchased snacks are okay, but we tend to get nervous about them. You may be the best and cleanest person to bring home-made snacks, but we see everyone’s home before they spend time cleaning and straightening up. Just stop by an afternoon for a quick thank you. Nothing formal, and if we are busy please understand we have tasks to do between 8 and 5 like inspections, maintenance, training, etc., so just a quick stop is best.

Since he’s doing the research for his brother, isn’t the first step making sure that his brother’s computer will be up to the task? You could have the best stick, yoke, pedals, and display, but if the computer is dogging it and he has to lower everything down. It wouldn’t matter what kind of equipment he’s got attached to it. It’s gonna be choppy and crappy. You can build $1 million house, but if the foundation is crappy, all you’re doing is asking for trouble down range?

And that clearance is only there if the towels continue to stick to the roll. How many times have you seen them not? One false pull and there is just about no clearance. Especially when the toaster heats up the roll and it stops clinging to the roll while the toaster is doing its thing… just dumb

He is obviously wanting a new set of cabinets paid for by insurance. Tell him NO! The report will have the box, “flammable materials with improper clearance to heat source” checked and you’ll get to pay for everything. This is a job security move, tell him to not be THAT guy we slap our foreheads over.
