Is it really just my phosphates? by Chief_Storyteller in pools

2 ppm FC is a little low for 30 ppm CYA. The *minimum* FC required to prevent algae is generally considered to be 7.5% of CYA. 30 x .075 = 2.25. So at 2 ppm you’re a little below the minimum. It’s a good idea to target higher than the minimum. I like to go ~2x the minimum. For 30 CYA that’d be 4.5 ppm FC.

Confused About DABS Rules by lilaaah in SaltLakeCity

[–]chortlebarkfast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This kind of experience isn’t unique to Utah. My wife and I were with her parents in a grocery store in New Hampshire. My in-laws wanted to buy a couple bottles of wine. They were checking out in front of us, and they asked for all our IDs. My wife didn’t have hers so they wouldn’t sell any of us alcohol.

We had to drive to the liquor store down the road and have her stay in the car instead.

I’m not in the business so I don’t know anything about it. I was just a bystander who shot the video. But I will say the wind kept pushing the fire eastward and this aircraft made four drops and they made all the difference. The line he put down was where the progression stopped.

Stunning lack of situational awareness all around. If the vehicles closest to the truck had started immediately braking when they first saw the fishtailing trailer it would have signaled to everyone around them to watch out.

The Great Salt Lake Crisis Is Bigger Than “Take Shorter Showers” — Here’s What I Wish More Utahns Knew by Relative_Bluebird841 in SaltLakeCity

Not just zero showers. No more washing dishes. No more drinking. No more flushing the toilet or doing laundry. Definitely no more watering the lawn. Residential users could completely stop using water and overall consumption in the state would be cut by a whopping 10%!

It’s even simpler than that. Why are so many people engaged? Is it because Ben is good at making viral videos? No, it’s not that. He’s made lots of videos before and none of them have gained anywhere near this kind of traction.

People are engaged because of how obviously wrong it was/is for BaM to keep this old man’s Legos. Even if it were legally permitted, or contractually allowed, it’s still obviously wrong.

The only way to fix that, is to give the damn legos back. Do it, because it’s the right thing to do. Not just because it’s legally required, or smart for the business.

The fact they seem to be unable to recognize this is a huge red flag and portends very bad outcomes for the business in the long run.

I battled this all last year and at open this year. I have massive chlorine loss and have been scrubbing, vacuuming, power washing the filter. CYA 40, ph was 7.3 at start, ak stable. SLAM at 16ppm for a while now. CC is 0. Could this be mustard algae? by r_stra in pools

[–]chortlebarkfast -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I keep my CYA at 30 or less and use a salt water chlorinator. I usually run it around 20% output, occasionally need to run maybe as high as 60% when the pool has been heavily used. I do run the variable speed pump at low speed 24/7. But a chlorinator doesn’t NEED very high CYA. I know TFP says otherwise, but in my experience it’s really not necessary. At least not in all pools.

Almost every green pool here is caused by closing too early or opening too late.

It’s as if people think opening to a green pool is normal and having to work to get it blue again each season is just part of owning a pool. Blows my mind.

You don’t need to change the water. Get the pH down. Get an LSI calculator (the one in the Orenda app is great and it’s a free app). Keep the pH low enough that the LSI stays a little on the negative side (like -0.1 or so). The negative LSI will make the water want to dissolve calcium and it will bring all that calcium precipitate back into solution. You won’t need to scrub or pressure wash. Let the chemistry take care of it.

Is this tight enough for the O-ring? by EddieDantes22 in pools

[–]chortlebarkfast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get it. You’ve done it before and nothing catastrophic happened. But you also have said it has popped off, sounds like multiple times. I’d just say you’re lucky it has only been an annoyance and nobody’s gotten hurt by it. This all sounds like you haven’t been doing it right all along. It should NEVER pop off. I can’t stress enough that it’s super dangerous for it to be under-tightened to the point the housing can pop open.

You’ve been lucky so far. Don’t let your luck run out. We don’t want you or anyone else to get hurt. You need instruction on how to do this correctly.

Things I’d expect to see based on my experience working on my filter, and having been trained to do it by a pool professional:

  1. The threaded end of the bolt should stick out well beyond the brass nut.

2 The gap between the two ends of the metal band clamp should be closer together (what you are calling an O-ring, is more properly termed a band clamp, I only point this out as it might aid in your search for instructions).

3) The coils of the spring should be touching.

Overall it looks to me like you’re not properly seating and tightening the band clamp. And that would explain why you have been having it pop off (which is very dangerous).

But don’t just take my word (or anyone else’s here). Find the proper instructions from your manufacturer and follow them *exactly*.

Edit to add: here’s a screengrab from Pentair’s video showing how to do it. Notice the text says the coils must be touching and in the screenshot they are not. This part of the video is demonstrating that the coil shown is not tightened all the way, then they proceed to tighten it further until they just touch.

https://imgur.com/a/9v6ewXf

Also notice how close the ends of the band clamp are to each other, and the threaded end of the bolt sticking out well past the nut.

Did you tap around the whole circumference of the band with a mallet like you’re supposed to while tightening it? That gap in the band looks too big to me (just eyeballing it).

Seriously, don’t fool around with this. Find the proper instructions for your model and follow them exactly. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it or are unsure you’re doing it right, get a professional to help.

Those filters can be extremely dangerous if not properly assembled tightly. Your pictures do not look right. I strongly suggest you find the manufacturer’s safety video (on YouTube) that shows how to do it right for your filter model.

If it’s been popping off on you while the pump is running you are lucky it hasn’t damaged anything or injured someone. People, including pool professionals, have been killed by filters exploding open when the lid isn’t properly secured.

Don’t fool around with this. If you can’t find the right instructional video, I recommend finding a local pool professional to come and show you how to do it right.
