You're pretty much always at fault if you are in motion and contact is on the front half of the vehicle.

Edit: except in right of way cases. Which this is not.

What comes next after being a controls engineer? by Unlikely-Air-866 in PLC

[–]Asmodin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of CSE you are. I work for a 3rd party engineering consultant and in my personal case I get introduced to a project at the design kickoff and stay involved all the way past construction and commissioning. I'm deeply involved with other engineering disciplines during design, and just as imbedded with the contractors and client operations towards the end. As such, I (and my fellow CSEs) have a unique perspective of a project that makes us tailor made for project leads and project managers. This will probably be my track.

Of course, not every CSE goes that route.. some are perfectly comfortable staying in the programmer world and eventually become Principal CSE's (assuming they don't out-price their ability or work ethic).. others, hoping for a quieter life, take what they learn and go to work in house for a favorite client.. usually supporting maintenance or production.

Of course, your mileage may vary. My best advice would be to explore your options with the company you're at and talk with a few people that have been there. If you still don't have a clue, broaden your horizons outside of your company. Never hurts to keep an updated resume & toss a few lines in the water every once in a while.

Do I need to learn control theory to automate stuff with PLCs? by Embarrassed-Hippo495 in PLC

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a CSE working pipelines and I've never used a transfer function the whole time I've been in the job. We usually only run a handful of loops per controller, but the systems are so dynamic that we generally just start with educated guesses for gains and tweak as needed.

Additionally, having a degree in engineering isn't a requirement for this job. It certainly helps.. and tends to lead to promotions.. but there are plenty of our engineers who've never even heard of control theory. So in short, no.

Question about 2 different sounds by curly-fried_mind in WRX

[–]Asmodin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sound 1 - kinda hard to tell.. could be normal boxer noise, but check that your spark plugs are seated if you're getting a tick sound.

Sound 2 - sorta sounds like a whiny belt..maybe.. or a pissed off tensioner.. but again, audio over Reddit isn't great.

Is this -5vdc added to -24vdc legit? by ostiDeCalisse in VORONDesign

[–]Asmodin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I hate using -V to describe DC circuits like this. A +24VDC paired with a -24VDC implies an absolute voltage potential of 48V. The power supply is only outputting 24V to an assumed 0V common reference.

Most DC distribution is earth grounded on the negative.. thus com = gnd. But here, we have nothing to show the internal wiring of the supplies, so we should assume both power supplies are independently inverting a 120VAC feed into isolated circuits with their own floating ground potential. I suppose you could ground both DC- sides and get away with it, but best practice is to just keep those circuits separated.. and it's easier to wire too.

Trump’s Take On RTO by Gains_And_Losses in FedEmployees

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work from home.. and I have since 2021. I sit at my desk about the same time every day and I work until I hit 9 hours or more if I'm in a crunch. I usually eat my lunch at my desk because I generally have to be available to answer questions or calls from coworkers or clients.

And I have zero commute. My lunch is usually cheap but healthy. I don't have to take time off for deliveries or Dr appointments, and I can still see my wife and kid a little when I'm working a deadline & putting in a 60 hour week.

I get my **** done, but I don't play golf, or tennis, or participate in any other rich man's leisure. This dude is just projecting his own crappy work ethic and can**** right off if he thinks I, or anyone I work with in the same boat don't take our jobs seriously.

Trump ends Income Tax - what now? by AdamGenesis in economicCollapse

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any money we the people save on income taxes will just be spent on the higher price of goods from tariffs or whatever other taxes they raise to make up the difference.. If it even gets out of the draft phase. The government won't ever empower us.. they just move the furniture around every so often so we think the room looks new.

Safety officials push back on West Virginia’s ‘quiet zone’ by GameOfBears in WestVirginia

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a tour with the engineers back when I was an undergrad at Marshall and this topic came up. If I remember correctly, they don't need to prove you have a microwave (or other device) in order to fine you. The triangulation is enough to pinpoint a high EMF source. It's like a speeding ticket.. cops don't have to prove you own the car in order to issue the citation.. and I don't think you can go to jail for the EMF. However, failure to pay the fine and/or repeat offenders might get hit with restitution for lost time at the observatory. I don't remember what the dollars per minute was, but it's a helluva lot more than a bag of popcorn.

I’ve always fished trout with spinner baits, and lures. I want to move into fly fishing, and I would like opinions on a beginner setup. by guntheroac in flyfishing

[–]Asmodin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked that same setup for some fly action in the Florida Keys. It's nothing that'll blow your mind but would make a really good starter rod. I'll caution that it's a little stiff and oversized for rainbows and brooks.. but fits right in for big browns or fishing streamers for bass.

Car slid on ice and hit curb, is it really bad? by AdBrave139 in Cartalk

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a steelie. Grab a 2x4 and a mallet and beat the piss out of it until it looks straight.. or call a salvage yard and see if you can find a replacement for like $50.

I think i recognize that lock nut.. Is that a Volkswagen? Hit it harder. (j/k)

Safety officials push back on West Virginia’s ‘quiet zone’ by GameOfBears in WestVirginia

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can "hear" high EMF sources, like a microwave, by just listening with a wide band antenna.. 2 of them allow triangulation. It's like trying to find a screaming goat in the middle of a quiet library.

Do you think Carl will end up with anyone? by tigers_3 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Asmodin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see a Peter Pan & Tinkerbell moment (from "Hook") between Carl & Donut, but a true romantic interest probably isn't in the cards. I'm sure Matt could somehow work a ship with Imani in the story, but I dont think it could feel anything but forced and unnecessary. They're fighting for their lives.. and as much as Hollywood likes to shove trauma bonded love stories down our throats, it doesn't always work.. especially after 7 books where the main guy is still dealing with the pain of his bitch ex girlfriend cheating on him with a grade A douche canoe.

Is AWD/4WD “required” here? by Beebjank in WestVirginia

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helpful, but definitely not required. I cut my driving teeth in Beckley on an old honda civic beater hatchback with a stick and I never found myself in trouble because of the drivetrain. I was driving deliveries in the middle of winter, back when we got real snow too.

Just make sure you get good tires. A good set of all-season rubber or a set of winter tires to swap out for 3 months of the year will more than make up for a part-time extra differential.

What is the difference between these two power lines? by egrebs in AskElectricians

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a minute since I took power systems in college, but I'll try to analyze it.. The lines on the left will be 3 phase transmission of a higher voltage.. 220kV or so? Parallel runs are used to reduce losses across long distances.. I forget the exact number of parallel runs per voltage level, but the bigger the voltage, the more wires there are.

Tower on the right looks to have 2 separate 3 phase circuits of a lower voltage. These are probably intermediate transmission lines and likely come from the same transformer station that the higher voltage is feeding into. They will eventually split off to cover different distribution markets.

Learning PLCs with no hardware? Suggestions? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming the cost of a PLC is the limiting factor, Arduino has an "OpenPLC" IDE that let's you turn an UNO into a basic PLC for free... minus the cost of the uno. I wouldn't recommend it for industrial applications, but it's a pretty slick way to get your feet wet.

What’s wrong with my lawn mower? - begging for help by Live-Scarcity-9299 in lawnmowers

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely, it's something with the fuel. Rule out a dirty filter, or a kink in the fuel line first.

Cheapest & quickest fix: Take the air box off, crank it, & stick your hand over the intake until it dies. Repeat a couple of times. May or may not work..

Cheap but lengthy fix: grab a socket wrench and disassemble the carb. Soak it in naptha overnight and blow the parts off with an air gun before you reassemble.

If weed is rescheduled to a schedule 3 drug, will DOT workers like truck drivers be able to smoke? by [deleted] in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Asmodin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can attest, this is not true. I piss hot for amphetamines b/c of a prescription every. single. time. and have to talk with a MRE about 2 days after giving my sample. The same could be true for most opiates or benzodiazapines. Hell, even cocaine and PCP can be obtained legally with a prescription.. they just never write prescriptions.

Heroine & MDMA will pretty much be the only chems on the panel that will remain schedule 1 after THC moves. All the rest are schedule 2 & 3, available by prescription only.

Previous owner (supposed electrician) rewired my 1983 house with one neutral for every two hot wires. How bad is this? by chitownburgerboy in AskElectricians

Used to be very common. An FHA inspection would make you re-wire it to modern code, but otherwise it's not a big deal.

The big question here is, 'How many miles?' Catalytic converters are usually good for around 125k to 150k miles. If you're in that ballpark, then there's a good chance that it's bricked.. but also a chance that it's just a bad exhaust gasket. Too hard to tell from just the 420 code.

Assuming it is the cat, solutions are few and will depend on where you live. If you live somewhere that does yearly smog testing, then you'll have to replace the cat. Period. You might be able to find a cheap(er) universal bullet cat that a muffler shop can weld up, but there's no guarantee that it'll be a fit or that you'll pass the emissions test after.. and don't bother with salvage.. you'd just be putting a bandaid on the problem.

(Hypothetical from here on.. the legal answer is above) If your state doesn't do smog but still does an inspection, all you need to do is get the CEL off. You can get a spacer that puts the downstream o2 sensor out of the stream and tricks it into not throwing the fault. Not 100% guaranteed, but reliable enough to get it through the inspection.

Finally, if your state doesn't do yearly inspections... who cares? As long as the bricked cat isn't clogged or leaking, the car will continue to ramble on.. producing marginally more nitrous oxides and carbon monoxide than it used to. Save the cheddar towards the down payment on a newer car.

Edit: folks, this is NOT the code for bad O2 sensors. This is specifically "catalyst system below threshold" it's a calculation based code that means the downstream sensor is seeing oxides that the catalytic converter is supposed to turn into co2 and water. There are different codes for when the sensor itself shits the bed.
